Ideally Sandin goes down for one more year of seasoning and Lily gets the spot with either Marincin (yikes), Schmaltz, or Harpur. But the fact remains that Sandin is probably our third or fourth best defenceman right now. By mid season I predict this kid will prove indispensable with his puck moving and passing skills. This prepares us well for next year when we probably lose one of Muzzin or Barrie. I’d rather have Sandin gaining the NHL experience this year because he has the higher ceiling than Lily.

The problem for Sandin is gonna be his defensive game, which I don't personally think is NHL quality yet. I think there's a very real chance he starts the season in Dermott's spot, but that he's returned to the AHL by 9 games to preserve the slide of his ELC years.

Let’s give him those 9 games and see how his defensive game progresses. Although obviously his defence is not top notch NHL quality at this point, I don’t believe it’s as poor as some think. In fact, I like his defensive instincts better than Lily’s at this point. That poke check that led to the Read goal is an example where he closed the gap quickly. Sandin thinks the game so well and is obviously a fast learner given his quick progression. Why not have him learn the nuances of a good defensive game from Muzzin and Barrie while they’re both here.

Burning a year off of Lily's ELC regardless this year. Really wish he had come with a better camp so far. He looks like he has the NHL frame and the tools, but he's yet to throw it all together.

I'm all for giving him the 9 games, but I don't think there's enough upside to playing him past that. I'll ultimately leave that to Dubas and the coaches to decide, but I have to imagine, with our cap issues that will be year after year, there's too much value in sliding the Sandin contract another year to not take that route. Like I said, I think there's more than enough he can work on for that extra year development at the AHL level to be still worthwhile. As for his defensive game being better than Liljegren's? I don't personally think so, but that's fine. As much as Sandin thinks the game at a high level and is clearly offensively doing well, his strength level and defensive game imo still are a bit of a sticking point. I just think if you're gonna burn that ELC year you have to be 100% confident this is where he should be.

Love Sandin but he looks like a boy out there playing against men. He'll get physically beaten on a lot of occasions.
I'd rather see him down in the AHL for another year, but a few games won;t hurt to see what we have, I guess.

Liljegren hasn't earned a spot on the roster. Whether Sandin does or does not get a roster spot, he has earned it.

The size fetish is way, way, way overrated on here. Liljegren has gained a lot of mass over the last two years but it hasn't helped him get any better - if anything he has lost his dynamism and needs a reset.

AHL is as physical, if not even more. If you're afraid of him getting hit by big players that's not really a solution. You're wrong about him looking like a boy out there anyway, but still

Lillys just not a great player. He has tools but doesnt have a sense for the game. Hopefully he can overcome thst next year.

I rarely agree with Babcock, but he’s right about Lily. He’s had an avg to below avg camp and unlike Sandin hasn’t shown enough to earn a spot...up to now. He played decently with the Marlies but you could tell Sandin was the one who had that ability to think the game quicker. I really do hope he plays better because the alternatives haven’t been impressive at all.

I thought that too last year. But truth of it is guys in AHL are bigger than guys in NHL. He looks like he is gonna get da crap kicked out of him when a monster came down on him and reefed him plenty a good one. But guess what actually happened? Damn kid stayed on his feet and kept the damn puck. I was shocked. Completely shocked. God knows how he does it but my guess is his core strength and leg balance is off the charts. Guys with 70+ pounds on him easy and they went down. If you watched the playoffs last year you saw it too.
His real issue is gonna be when pace of play moves up to February level is he fast enough to keep up when his passes get intercepted .... guess we won't know til then

Where’s the Babs comment on Lil?

Petan-Shore-Agostino
Korshkov-Gaudet-Read
Archibald-Brooks-Bracco
Engvall-Elynuik-Aberg
Harpur-Holl
Rubins-Liljegren
Gravel-Schmaltz

right there, tonights line-up....this is basically the last chance saloon for these guys
I meant the comment about having a so so camp and not processing fast enough? I know the pairings, he wasn’t about to make it.

Great game today. He needed one after a couple of just decent performances.
Best defenceman on the ice today, but sadly Babcock didn't give him a fair just because of the 1st game. The excuses will come for Babcock, but there is no reason Schmaltz, Holl, and Harpur to get more ice time. He put emphasis on 1st impressions, why is not the way to run things.
If your evaluating the players trying out on defence, the order is
Sandin
Marincin
Lilly
Gravel
Schmaltz
Harpur

Liljegren isn't NHL ready now. While Sandin looks good in exhibition games, that's long way from a heavy NHL schedule. Sometimes when a player is given a "look see" in October in the NHL and then in sent down, it is sorta of lost year. Rather send a young player down in October then if warranted call him up later.

I'm right on board with seeing his pairing with Rubins as not much of a way to showcase a player you're seriously considering. Okay it wouldn't be ridiculous maybe for 1 game to put a heavier load on the player to see how he reacts.

It's the next step I can't take at the moment: that there's some conspiracy to hold back the player. I think it's more about sheltering the younger player with more experienced options (new to the organization) being considered ahead of him. The team needs to know about those players first.

P.S. I don't mind Rubins as well. They may be considering him as a Justin Holl type of signing later on. He's got some decent hands and coordination. The skating is still a bit rough.

Meh let Lily start in the AHL and let his strong play build his confidence up until his call up.

I thought he played better tonight, going back to the Marlies and playing a ton on the top pair and both special team units with some momentum should get his season off to a strong start

There's talent there, it's just a matter of continuing to develop it
