It's not the fact that he's dialled it back, but at the rate at which he did it.
And it's usually a longer process to try and work the kinks out. The ill timed pinches that defensemen do when they don't anticipate the game well enough or the defensive assignments.
What he has done very well is joining the rush and the Leafs style of play where they activate the weak side defenseman up the wing will play very well into his hand because of his ability to skate. He's engaged longer in defensive battles and that's probably because he's gotten a bit bigger. Whereas Sandin, within the same amount of NHL time, hasn't really elevated that part of his game yet. To me, that's the most noticeable difference.

The one thing I hate about posters like you, is that you take personal shots just because you don’t agree. You don’t have to agree, but you’re not better than others. Not everyone sees things the way you do.
It’s why we have these forums so people can share their thoughts, whether you believe them to be right or wrong.
It’s nice to see Timothy play with increased confidence the last few games. But prior to that, he was average to a lot of people because he was making a lot of mistakes and not playing confident. That has obviously changed in recent days.

Definitely. Just like we shouldn't overreact if he doesn't have great games against them. The thing about him like so many of us have been saying is that as soon as he gets acclimated, he's going to be a stud. He has all the tools of a top-4 NHL defenseman and the toolbox was developed over years of dominating at the AHL level. He became one of the best two-way defenseman in the league by the age of 20. Give him rope, let him make his mistakes, let him gain confidence in his abilities at the NHL level and you'll shut up all the dumbasses that doubted him for years.
Talk to me after he has played 400 games then we can talk about what he will be .. until then you are just wasting your time

what motivations? You’re not the first person to say that. What possible motivations does one have on a forum LMAO. Like there’s no incentive whatsoever, you don’t gain anything from here in real life. That’s just literally how people feel. Liljegren has looked terrific in the past 3 games alongside Sandin on the third pairing. We have to keep in mind that it was against Chicago, Detroit, and a depleted Vegas team. Still, he has shown a calmness to his game that bodes well for the future.
Having said that, I would keep him on the third pairing against the other team's 3rd and 4th liners a little longer, at the very least the games against Tampa and Boston, and see how he plays there. Unfortunately, that means that if Dermott is out, Holl may have to play with Rielly. As terrible as he has been this season, he does have more experience, and pairing him with an experienced player like Rielly, and a player who likes to pinch, it will force Holl to simplify his game.

The good thing is he’s shown he can play bottom pairing against weaker opponents. Now we will get to see how he does against strong ear opponents.

I did Liljegren’s shift by shift report from the game against the Red Wings. In bold are mistakes he made, and blue are stand out plays he made.
1st Period
1st Shift: The Wings try to get out of the zone using the side boards, but Lilly steps up inside the O-zone and blocks the attempt by the other Wings player to get out. Few seconds later, Lilly’s shot from the side boards is blocked. Lilly receives a pass from Sandin behind his net, and quickly gives it back to Sandin with pressure coming, but Sandin didn’t seem to be aware and is late to react to the puck, and Wings get it. With the Leafs hemmed in a bit, Lilly gets the puck below the goal line on the side boards and passes it to Sandin and Leafs breakout.
2nd Shift: Lilly gets a loose puck inside the O-zone, and carries it a bit before stopping and sending a nice one timer pass to Sandin who misses the net. Right after the miss, Lilly quickly gets to his side boards and keeps the puck in. Seconds later, Lilly gets a pass from Maner at the blueline, and walks in and shoots a slap shot from the high slot which is stopped. Seconds later, Lilly holds the puck and quickly makes a pass to his teammate on the sideboards. Wings flip the puck out, and Lilly makes a pass to Spezza just outside the opposing zone and he skate taps it in.
3rd Shift: Lilly gets a pass from Sandin and makes a breakout pass but it doesn’t reach its target. Lilly pinches inside the Wings blueline but can’t keep it in, tries to pass the puck which got behind him to Sandin, gets deflected but Matthews picks it up. Lilly receives a pass from Kerfoot in his own zone, and holds on to it for a couple seconds while both teams complete a change. He passes it to Sandin and Leafs start the breakout.
4th Shift: Lilly gets a loose puck inside the Wings blue line and passes to his partner Sandin. Lilly gets a pass from Kerfoot seconds later, and fans on a one timer, but then passes to Sandin across who passes back, and then Lilly passes to Marner who was coming up high. Lilly goes towards the net and then loops back to the line where he shoots a one timer from a pass that misses the net. Seconds later, Lilly gets a pass from Marner in his zone, and Lilly then sends a perfect saucer breakout pass to Marner at the Wings blueline who carries it in.
5th Shift: Sandin spins off a check behind his net, and passes to Lilly where he sends a breakout pass to his teammate who deflects it in.
6th Shift: Lilly receives a short pass in his zone that he handles in his skates, and sends a breakout pass to a teammate. Later this is my favourite play, Sandin gets caught at the Wings line, and results in a 1 on for Liljegren. Sandin rushes back and takes the other man who got the puck, while Liljegren takes the man without the puck and Sandin takes his man to the boards. That’s textbook communication and awareness by the two on how to play a 1 on 1 that became a 2 on 2. You could see Sandin pointing to Liljegren to take him, I have this guy. There wasn’t confusion on which one the other should take.
7th Shift: Nothing really here
2nd Period
8th Shift: As the Wings are looking to break out of the zone, Lilly notices they don’t have control so he makes a stand up just outside the blue line, and gets the puck and makes a turn around pass inside his zone to Nylander. Seconds later, Lilly gets the puck behind his net, and carries it a bit before making a breakout pass to Nylander again, who with pressure gives it back to Lilly who makes another breakout pass to a teammate leading to a good scoring chance.
9th Shift: Some nice passing by Lilly inside the Wings zone including one that almost lead to a backdoor play by Sandin. However later, Lilly makes an errand breakout pass that misses everybody and Wings take control in their zone.
10th Shift: Nothing here aside from a weird play that lead to a puck getting past Lilly leading to a chance.
11th Shift: Lilly gets the puck from Matthews in his zone, and carries it all the way to centre ice before shooting it in. That’s a confident carry by Lilly.
12th Shift: Lilly gets the puck from Sandin and makes a breakout pass to his teammate who puts it on the Wings goalie. Lilly gets a loose puck in the neutral zone, and makes a backhand pass to Sandin. Later Lilly realizes Sandin will pick up the puck, so he goes toward the other side in the neutral zone and receives a pass turned towards his zone, he turns around and makes a pass to a teammate and they enter the zone.
13th Shift: Lilly gets a loose puck on his backhand just inside his zone, and quickly makes a forehand bank pass off the boards to a teammate but instead of going to his target, it goes to his other teammate which leads to a 2 on 1 for the Leafs.
14th Shift: Nothing here
3rd Period:
15th Shift: Lilly gets a puck off the Wings shoot in, and passes it around the boards but a Wings player is on the side boards however he can’t control it. Later, Lilly gets a loose puck in front of his net, and goes behind his net and with pressure on him, makes a short backhand pass to Sandin who makes a breakout pass.
16th Shift: As the Wings enter the zone, Lilly almost gets beat on the outside but his stick prevents the Wings player from passing to the front of the net. In fact, Lilly was beat but not entirely, and his stick might have saved a centering pass. His partner Sandin read the play well and took his man. Later, Lilly gets the puck off the faceoff and passes it around the boards to Marner, who turns around with a nifty move on his fore checker passes it back to Lilly who carries behind his net all the way to the red line and dumps it in.
17th Shift: A PK shift, Lilly reads a one timer play well and quickly gets there and positions himself and makes a shot block. Lilly was clearly exhausted after that over 1:20 shift.
18th Shift: Nothing here
19th Shift: Nothing here. This is the time where Lilly took Dermott’s spot with Rielly.
20th Shift: This shift was with Muzzin. Nothing here.
21st Shift: Nothing here aside from miss pass by Marner to Lilly. Just after that though, Lilly and a Wings player go after a puck in the corners, and Lilly takes good body position on him and Leafs get the puck.
