Thunderbirds 2024 25

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

This weekend, the final regular season games in the CHL are being played. We already know Kelowna's season ends, so Stancl will likely go to Springfield. Sarnia and the 67ers season might also end, so there is a chance Fischer and Mayich (if we decide to sign him, which I doubt) will also report to Springfield.

The rest of our CHL-players are heading to their respective playoffs.

Springfield also signed Anthony Kehrer to an ATO (+ 1 year deal). RD from Wisconsin.

Wait a minute, are you talking Lukas Fischer? Because there's no way he's old enough for the AHL, unless there's some weird rule I'm completely missing (I know that his father is Czech, but he's American-born, and he literally turned eighteen in September.). If you're talking Paul Fischer, his rights got traded to the Edmonton Oilers.

He'd be eligible for an ATO contract.

His junior season is over, so the age rule doesn’t apply.

Okay. I was just a little confused. The kid just turned eighteen in September of last year. He barely missed the cutoff for this draft. I just think he's a little young for the AHL, even if we need bodies.

Okay, but I just thought that the CHL has rules against Canadian/American teenagers playing in the AHL. Is he eligible because of his Czech dual citizenship?

Rule is in place to protect Chl. Once a player’s chl season ends, it doesn’t apply. And has nothing to do with birth place or citizenship, rules apply to any player drafted out of chl (although some imports are excluded bc of basically being on loan to chl).

Okay. Understood now. Thank you for educating me. I'm admittedly pretty hockey dumb, despite having watched (and listened on the radio) since I was a kid, so I appreciate learning new things.

Just to add to what Blueston said, Fischer can potentially finish the season in the AHL if he signs an ATO, however he can't start next season in the AHL and will either be back in the OHL or in the NHL (not going to happen).

The goal is to extend his season a bit and to give him some time in a professional environment. We did the same with, for example, Jordan Kyrou in 16/17 and let him train with the Wolves (and play in one game) before he returned to the OHL.

On a sidenote, Jiricek doesn't fall under the CHL-agreement, so he CAN play in the AHL next season if the Blues decide to (can't imagine they do, though).

Interesting. I didn't know that about ATOs for underage junior players.

No need for either of them to play in AHL. Let them grow at the regular pace. They'll both be in pre-season camp with the Blues in September.

So…can an overage junior committed to college sign an ATO to play in the AHL and go to college next year? The college deal may kill overage junior free agency

I think they'd lose their amateur eligibility once they signed the ATO, and would not be able to return to college (to play, they could akways still attend classes). I am not 100% though as the NIL rules have clouded amateur eligibility.

I think an ATO would cause loss of amateur status though. You can't have ever been paid to play before or during playing in the NCAA outside of the NIL.

Carson Gicewicz - C - having a breakout year for the Everblades. Maybe could help the T-Birds

27 G 26 A +31

Carson Gicewicz wasted little time stretching his point streak to eight games, picking up his team-high 26th goal of the season just under six minutes into the game. With a two-goal performance in Friday’s win, Gicewicz has 10 points on seven goals – all in the last six games – and three assists.

I was curious about that because a few at 19 non drafted played ECHL on a tryout and went back to junior the next year. I didn’t see if they are now committed to a college or not. That I don’t know. Seems college is their new route to extending their opportunities

Why not send Fischer to the AHL? It's just untill the end of Springfields season then he'll return to Sarnia. It's just a few weeks mostly training with pro's and maybe a game here and there.

Our track record with most defensemen is to start them in the AHL around the age of 20. Lukas has at least one more year until our coaching staff will likely consider sending him there IMO.

Well, yes, but we might not have ever drafted a Dman as young as Fischer. He was turned 18 Sept 9th, and the draft eligibility cutoff was Sept 15th. So if he was born just 6 days later, he would be eligible for this year's draft.

The only other example I can find that's close to that is when we drafted Maxim Linnik in the second round in 1998. His birthday was three days before Fischer's, the 6th of Sept. He played two games for the Worcester IceCats in 2000, which was his age 19 season. That was so long ago that (a) all of the eligibility rules were probably different, and (b) it may as well have been a different team for all it tells us about how this front office will manage someone that young.

More recently, David Noel (an April birthday) played a game for the Rampage in his age 18 season before going back to the Q the following season. Nick Walters (also an April) played 4 games for Peoria in 2013 when he was 18. So, we aren't completely opposed to the idea.

Fisch had himself quite a season on a really bad Sarnia team. I could see us thinking he is ready for a taste of the pro game, or wanting to reward him for a job well-done. But at the same time, throwing an 18-year-old to the wolves in the middle of the playoff ramp-up could be counter-productive.
