Why wouldn't the Islanders keep dobson?

As a non-canuck fan do Horvat and Miller really have the same value?

Certainly Isles would be the least likely to make this trade. I wanted to give them a draft pick but wasn't sure where it would come from. Thought I'd just leave it a bit open in that regard for viewers to decide. Isles would get a more capable offensive dman and more known quantity. Plus say a 2nd from Col.

Miller is a better player but he plays wing which is a less sought after position. Miller can play center if needed but I don't think you'd want him there full time. Horvat is younger. They both have a yr and half left at 5.5 or so. Both cheap deals. Horvat would have slightly more value do to age and position in a trade I would say but in the same ball park.

Girard is signed for 5 more years, Horvat/Miller just one more year.

Ignoring anything else, that reason alone makes this an easy no for Colorado. Something else fairly significant would have to come Colorado's way.

EDIT: Wait you think Colorado is the one adding a piece to NYI?

 lock this one up early.
I would say Horvat is worth more than Girard but that's why I left it open. Certainly it'd be close and no need for fake laughter.

For the hypothetical piece call it Horvat and he resigns at 6.5-7 long term in Col.

The Kadri - Barrie trade is analogous actually to Girard - Horvat.

There is No Fing way I’m adding a pick to Girard to land JT Miller.

Horvat? I’m more open to it there.

Horvat has been coasting on "intangibles 2-way captain" reputation for way too long. He is not good defensively and way worse offensively than JT Miller.

The Avs will run Mack-Kadri-Newhook down the middle, why would we want Horvat when Miller is a much better fit and player?

This is all true. Horvat somehow has a little more value because he is younger and could be seen as a Kadri replacement. That said Miller is a much much better player at basically everything.

Because Girard is only two years older while being a much better and proven player currently.

There’s a lot of good reasons for why the Islanders should want to hold onto Dobson, but if we can get Girard back I would trade him.

2C, big body, kinda dirty player (Avs-Macdermid should fight (or just crush) him next game for that BS elbow on Byram, good playoff stats, great in the dot. I’d value that highly. Moreso than a wing.

Also puts Kadri at 3C to give the Avs more depth in their top nine down the middle. Newhook at 4C is also as good/skilled a 4C as you’d see in the NHL.

that’s why.

People not realizing Girard is producing right there with Horvat while being cheaper, signed for longer, younger and better defensively. Yes I know dmen and forwards are harder to compare. Horvat isn't even much of an upgrade on Kadri unless it's just age. And I wouldn't trade Girard for a younger kadri.

Horvat pushing Kadri down the lineup is laughable

I think Girard is expendable with the immergence of Byram. That is to say that if you feel you could get an upgrade in a position of more need moving Girard makes sense. As a base Horvat and Girard have similar value. Add a small something either side.

Kadri was absolutely terrible last season. Was good his first year with the Avs.

He’s streaky. Let’s not get carried away with how he started this season. He’s got potential to disappear for a month.
Oh yes Kadri is hot and cold for sure. But even if he got cold tomorrow he'd look better than the blackhole Horvat has been for Vancouver.

The fact he has gotten to play with one of Garland/Miller all year + PP1 is the only reason he has any points because he's generating 0 himself

For at least half the teams in the league, Girard is a top pairing defenseman. He also has one of the best contracts in the league. Nevemind the echo chamber.

LOL. Anytime this guy faces top opposition he gets absolutely embarrassed and you think he's a legit top pair defenseman?

Any time? Vegas = anytime?

Let's put it this way. The defense is the engine of the Avs. He's been a big part of that engine. Go find another defenseman to engineer this deal.

Even though Dobson has underperformed, NYI really has nothing in the pipeline defensively so they are somewhat forced to keep him while he's on his ELC.

Girard averages ~22 minutes a-game and has some PK duties. That ice time alone requires him to play many shifts vs top six lines. He’s been great against many top forwards for years now. He’s also just 23. Girard is better defensively than he is offensively.
