That's a tough one but gotta go Cornell too. AiC's harmonies were underrated though. The Layne + Jerry combo was special.

I have friends with intimate knowledge (political and/or media connections) of the situation and they have little doubt the city is going to be shut down within a week or so.

Most of us in my industry hoped we could make it through New Years but it's looking pretty grim.

Not here to debate as the time for that has long since passed, just to express my overall sadness of another Christmas probably being lost.

I'm not usually super into Christmas, but I'm looking forward it this year, because a few more relatives will be meeting my little guy in person for the first time.

Christmas takes on a new meaning when you get to share it with your children. Experiencing it through your child’s eyes is amazing and gets better with every year (while they are young at least, I can’t speak to teenagers and the such yet ).

When you say "shut down", you mean bars and theaters and such?

I only ask because I work for, and attend, one of the major universities here and we're "shutting down" for a few days leading into Winter Break, but the expectation is that Spring semester courses will still be in-person. My friend is a public school teacher and she said that the DOE have no plans to go remote any time soon - they're emailing teachers preemptively to tell them that.

Ya, I think this will be the case. My wife and I aren't big Christmas gift givers. But I expect we'll feel like we have to do something for the kid.

I'm still not sure how I will handle Santa though. We've talked about not lying to our kids, but I feel like that plan won't survive first contact with childish gullibility.

he likely won’t ask for a few years so you will have time to develop a strategy. Kids deserve a little magic in their lives. To me things like Santa aren’t lying. Santa as a concept can be real even if the man isn’t. Put on your ObiWan hat if it makes it easier.

CUNY is certainly going remote. Columbia's trying not to but it's not looking good. I have no information about the other universities but imagine they'll follow suit.

DoE can email everyone they care to, but unfortunately the dread has already set in in the service industry and they tend to set the standard when it comes to public health, as odd as that may sound.

Most if not all financial, tech, and media firms in the city 'adjusting' in office hours doesn't strike me as promising either.

More than not promising, the times is telling core staff what is going on. And for all the shit legacy media (sometimes) deservedly receives, it's my understanding that they're actually not just aiming for clicks and eyeballs on this one and in fact doing the opposite.

I don't know, it still feels like lying to me. I think we might end up going along with the ruse just because we don't want our kid to be the buzzkill who tells everyone else at daycare that Santa is made up.

You have to chart your own path but you will find you have to nuance what to tell kids at times.

I used to think like that.

The one redeeming thing about Christmas is seeing the benevolence buried beneath the hardened exteriors of ordinary people. There are a lot of people who are down on their luck that, seemingly out of nowhere, will be the recipients of charity. Its happened to my family when i was a little kid. It can seem like a miracle.

Kids can't understand that very well. Santa is a simple metaphor that embodies the spirit of the season. And when you see a child's face light up with excitement when they see/talk about Santa, it's a lie I can live with

The power of myth is real. The world is a better place for all of it. I let my kids figure it out, and I always went with the stock line of 'what do you think? - and: 'Do you like the world better with or without Santa Claus?' There's nothing wrong (in this sort of thing) in believing what you want to believe. Plenty of time for them to become cynical and jaded.

Above all, kids want to feel safe. I've got some friends who were brutally honest and exposed their kids to everything without filters. Never saw two more F'd up individuals than those kids.

I know this probably isn’t the place for this, but my dad was rushed to the hospital and has been given a 1% chance of survival
I didn’t know what else to do, but I had to get this out

Ah shit that's awful. Absolutely sorry to hear that. I know it's not easy but try to hang in there. Wishing you and your family all the best and hoping for a miracle for you.
