OT: Thread About Nothing (part # who cares)

I have no allegiance to American companies "just because" they are American.

Some definitely deserve that consideration though: Small craftsmen like traditional bow and wooden arrow makers are definitely worth every penny...some leather workers that make quivers, arm guards and accessories I love to support.

Some fly reel companies are pretty awesome too. Nautilus, Hatch, Galvan and Lamson come to mind. All machined in the US.

My favorite fly tying vise Renzetti is made in Florida. Their quality is just unbelievable.

Easton Arrows is another. Easton does a lot of things now but they started as a wood arrow company that figured out aluminum was a viable arrow material. All their arrows shafts, now mostly carbon are made in Utah.

Most of these things have cheaper alternatives but there is a significant quality difference and I'm always happy to pay a premium for quality....but when companies are just putting their branding on the inferior quality stuff but want to charge the same as the small craftsmen or the the American machined fly reel I get super offended.

If I get back into tying, I'm getting this vice:

Great vise... but holy smokes that's expensive. I had no idea that they have gone up so much. That green anodized looks sharp though. The original traveler was plain silver/chrome. I borrowed one from a friend and tied on it for over a year before I got mine. A lot of professional tiers tie on the traveler.

I have the Presentation 4000. And I paid $340 in 2017. Looking online it looks well over $500 now.

Every year I feel I'm more out of touch with current price... I guess it's a symptom of getting old.

It's a symptom of other things. Getting old only accounts for a portion of it. A small one I'd argue, especially in the last 10 years or so.

Yeah the price to build anything using fiberglass, carbon fiber, poly or epoxy resin is just insane today. I've been making surfboards since 2003, poly resin used to be $16 a gallon for years, it's $72 now, same with the foam blanks. Used to be $40 for a shortboard blank now its $130. It's all petroleum based stuff which really isn't that much higher now per barrel since then ($40 in 2008, $60ish today). Catalyst and additives like MEKP, styrene and other modifiers are really pricey for tiny little amounts too.

Like @TheUnseenHand said It's all bullshit, the price never comes down even after prices for materials came down and supply chains got better, shipping is a massive expense scam too. I'm using old 50's technology, real simple construction, the price for the more exotic resins, additives and cloths are bonkers.

My two cats have treated having kids hoisted upon them very differently. Our large fluffy tortie is either too lazy or doesn't have the survival instinct, and mostly does nothing when the twins get a little rowdy (giving her a big hug, pulling on her tail, things of that nature). Lately they've gotten better at handling her and being more gentle, but for a time, they got plenty of scratches.

Our cream orange tabby noticed how her tortie sister gets treated and wants none of that. Whenever they appear, she runs into the kitchen and hides in a safe place where they can't reach. Recently, she sat on the couch arm and one of the twins was gentle with her for about five seconds. Then she tugged on her fur and got scratched. She's a street cat originally- she knows the score.

I'm going to check out Georgia. Hopefully it'll be the 21st state I've caught a trout in.

I've been holding steady at 20 for a long time now.

Today - my 3-legged dog killed her 3rd rabbit in the backyard. 2nd confirmed.... but likely 3rd overall.

I’m sorry for thr rabbit. I know that’s your dog’s instincts and hard to overcome if you aren’t watching them like a hawk . Our female (RIP) used to chase critters in the back but she was loud and obvious so was only successful with turtles thankfully

yea its a bit of a bummer. Like i'm proud that she is fast enough. But also bummed for the animals.

This one... i think came from my neighbors yard. They just started construction/extension on their house. and I think it wondered over to our yard (looked like it was 'teenage' level size).

i used to have a cat for almost 18 years but dont want to commit to another one.

but such is the way with wildlife.....last year there was two sets of eggs so there's a chance still for more this year

Our dogs have always lived in the house with us as does our cat. We have always had a big fenced yard for them. I would not want them stalking prey outside nor would I want them to be threatened in any way.

Its from the US Geolological Service.

I have booked marked about a dozen gauges for various rivers to check the flows and temperatures

Today's rain raised the cfs nearly off the chart.

Looks like a new high for this day.

I too have many gauges booked. I check my local dam for discharge >2000 because that’s when the Ospreys & Bald Eagles feed.

Make for some great shots.

I was planning on going to the Somerset Patriots Sopranos Night game on May 31 but the NJ Transit train strike has me scrambling. I'm going to do my best to not waste the $60 for a game and a guaranteed bobble head. If anyone lives in NYC and can drive me to Bridgewater, DM me. I will comp you with a ticket.
