OT: Thread About Nothing (part # who cares)

I made scallops last night and woke up this morning and the kitchen smells horribly like old fish.

I think it's the package they came in that's in the garbage. Holy smokes it smells like the docks in here

i want to make some calamari but don't know if it might trigger a gout episode. havent had any since at least october. maybe i'll try a small amount when i get back from ottawa work trip the next few days.

RIP
Was not expecting this. I know he had throat cancer and hasn’t been in the greatest of health the last few years. Haven’t seen him much since the 90s, but I liked quite a few of his movies.

My deepest condolences to Val's family. 😢

Madmortigan (at least I remember it was pronounced like that) from Willow is how I remembered him (along with him being Batman).
I liked him as Batman, but thought that movie was cringe.

Through no fault of his own. It wasn’t awful.

He took heat for that because he replaced Michael Keaton, who I forget why he didn’t come back. May have been a money dispute. I think fans were mad that Michael Keaton didn’t play Batman and it was Val Kilmer instead.

But I liked him as Batman.

That was movie was cringy, but not terrible. Watched it about 4 years ago for the first time probably since it was new.

I actually liked him as Batman too. The worst part of that movie was Jim Carrey's Riddler. Tommy Lee Jones as Two Face was a bizarre decision too.

The scenes with Kilmer in Maverick are going to be even more of a gut punch now.

I eat calamari all the time and usually don't have a problem. Squid seems mild for me. Shellfish is very iffy, but shellfish and beer together is the killer. Unfortunately, that's my favorite combo. It seems everyone has different triggers though. For me the real issue is alcohol, beer specifically.

I think I went too long thinking that it was just one thing when it really was a build up of a lot of things... basically lifestyle...have a flare up and blame the last thing you ate but it was actually a week or month of too many beers, questionable diet and weight gain.

But I have been able to keep it in check for a long time with regular blood tests and medication. I get my uric acid levels checked every 6 months. Keep it well under 6 mg/dl long-term and you'll be able to get away with a lot more more often. If you have problems, it's really worth keeping tabs on your uric acid levels. Keeping a consistent healthy weight goes a long way too... another thing I struggle with

Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison was pretty spectacular...but he'll always be Doc Holiday to me.
Timeless, masterful performance.

That's awesome on the abstinence.

I'm not a doctor but I bet any issues went away with not drinking and weight loss.

I need to watch more movies with him in it. I like that they wrote him into Top Gun Maverick, limitations and all. It was a nice send-off.

I'm not 100% dry but I like to stay away from booze as much as possible because it's too caloric. An edible and some willpower is all I need.

Edibles, THC in general, regardless of the delivery system, doesn't do it for me. It just puts me to sleep. People have suggested different strains and it all seems to make me sleepy.

And I kinda really like the social aspect of a few beers at my local pub. Hard thing to give up...and of course after a few beers poor food choices are soon to follow.

Val Kilmer was great as Doc Holliday. If you want to see a crazy performance by him and Marlon Brando watch the semi-recent Island of Dr. Moreau. Really nuts. I thought he did an excellent job as Jim Morrison but I did not like the movie overall.

Is 29 years ago semi recent? Lol There's a documentary about how much of a disaster filming that movie was but I never got around to watching it.

When you are as old as me, anything after the invetion of DVDs is semi recent. I'm going with semi-recent just to differentiate it from the earlier versions. I watched the Michael York version when I was younger. I also watched the documentary on the making of the film you mentioned. The original director was hung out to dry by the studio and the far flung location contributed to some of the mess. They would have been better off with more conventional casting. Shoe horning Kilmer and Brando into the film was pouring gasoline on a fire.

My theory is if you're old enough to live through it, it's 'recent'

However, and not to get too philosophical, time is a very subjective and relative subject. To some, 10 years is a lifetime ago, to others it was 'just yesterday'.
To my mother in law 50 years ago is just yesterday because she can no longer remember what happened yesterday. My impression is that is an all to common occurrence when we get old enough.

Finally pulled the trigger and ordered a 1/4 Cow share...also added 1/4 Pig while I was at it. Should be about 125-130 pounds of meat combined. With two teenage boys in the house, I probably should've done this much sooner.

How's that work? You picking it up somewhere locally or they send it to you as different steaks, cuts, etc?

With the cost of meat these days it's probably cheaper than the grocery store or close to the same I'd imagine.

Some days it just feels like this. It certainly does today.

Recently, my wife told me about the concept of “radical acceptance,” which is accepting the things that you can’t change, and dealing with the things that you can. I’ve learned a lot through foster parenting, but one of the big things is that this is its own form of making a difference. It’s not large scale, but for those kids, it’s the world. I wish it was that simple all around us but alas.

I found a place in PA that's roughly an hour away that I'm picking it up from in about 6 weeks once the order is ready. There were closer spots in NJ, but this one was quite a bit cheaper and still highly rated. Also had the option to have it shipped to me, but for the cow alone that's an additional $135, so decided to pick it up.

Everything comes vacuum packaged & frozen, so will load up the car and toss it in the freezer once I get home. For the pork, you pick the varieties of sausage and specialty meats you want. Beef came out to ~$9.57/LB and Pork is ~$7.05/LB. The animals are all pasture-raised and cows are 100% grass-fed, so quality might be a bit better compared to grocery stores and it's at least good to know the animals were ethically raised.

Below is what's included in each share.
