OT: Thread About Nothing (part # who cares)

Honestly, if this site ever finally shutdown... My connection to the "old internet" will be dead.

Browsed these boards from around early 2006 and signed up in early 2007. The world, and the internet, has changed so much since then.

Message boards are the last bastion of that bygone era. This is the only one that I have continued to use since the mid-2000's.

this is the only thing/place i'm on. no twitter, no facebook, no whatever else there is....never had anything else

just finished this fixup project. my old traynor mark 3 amp. covering was nasty, mold took over from decades of existence. i picked this up about 25 years ago from a friend's clueless weed dealer for 70 bucks. i didnt give a f*** about telling the it was worth way more (dont know if he knew or not or if he cared). another part of the story is i knew peter traynor who started his own amp company. he lived on the next road about 4 miles away...

check out the video (episode 3) in the link where he throws one of his amps off a roof....and it works afterwards

Local bald eagle family today. Eaglets are about 3 weeks old now, first time I’ve seen them. I believe this is the pair’s 8th brood.
Nice. Is this Duke's?

It's amazing the comeback bald eagles have made. When I was kid there were no such thing around here ..now I know of 3 nest sites within 20 miles of me....Duke farms being one there is another along the Raritan on the opposite side of Easton avenue and another on Carnegie lake in Princeton.... there's a lot more but I've seen those ones personally.

I still have my facebook account, never go on there. Boomer brain rot and AI slop everywhere.
I left Facebook around 5 years ago...way too political and full of nonsense for me.

It sucks though because I am tempted to go back ... everyone in the traditional archery community is using marketplace to buy/sell/and trade equipment. Not only that, but a lot of fishing guides and other small businesses in the outdoor industry use Facebook as their only business website...sucks for me because I ain't going back

Pretty much the same for me ... I go to two other forums just to read and never post. One archery and one fly tying.

I read mostly to see what's new. New products or reviews stuff like that.

Yeah the only reason I'm still on Facebook is for my hobbies. For whatever reason, updates and buy/sell/trade groups all want to live there.

I found Instagram to be a reasonable substitute. Not really for person to person buy/sell/trade, but for the small businesses interactions. Most of them seem to also have an Instagram presence and let you know what they have going on.

And I don't have to hear anyone's opinion or watch their fights if I don't want to on Instagram....just show me your fish pictures

It’s in Raleigh actually but I must have 6-8 nesting sites in a 20 mile radius as well. The population is in such a good spot. It’s great to see.

My oldest was working for NASA at 19 and was published in a technical journal. 2 years behind isn’t bad. My youngest is currently an ESPN correspondent at U of F also at 19. Thr middle one got hung out to dry by the Covid interruption at that age. But passing the bar is no joke. Doubt I could have done it at that age even with preparation.

I made scallops last night and woke up this morning and the kitchen smells horribly like old fish.

I think it's the package they came in that's in the garbage. Holy smokes it smells like the docks in here

I quit Twitter 10 years ago and Facebook three-ish years ago. Generally, if I stop having fun with a place online, I leave. That goes both for social media and old-school forums. I quit a formerly prominent forum in February 2020 for that reason.

I use Instagram for friends, dogs, and cats, and I never ever use the algorithm to find new stuff. I'm also on Bluesky because it's what Twitter was in the early 2010s, but I'm also not checking my timeline a lot.

The thing I like about Twitter is that you can avoid algorithms if you want by sticking with the "Following" feed versus "For You", which is what I usually do. Not sure which other platforms give you that option as I'm generally just on Twitter or HF. I'd prefer to use the algorithm more often if there was someway of having input - whether it's just accounts you follow, avoiding certain accounts, or whatever - particularly as I'm using the platform less overall. Unfortunately, the goal of the algorithms is to increase engagement and keep you on the platform longer versus giving you the type of content you'd prefer.

I still have a Facebook account that I should really use more to keep up with friends and family, but every few months when I go on there I notice (a) tons of ads (b) tons of stuff I don't care about, such as someone I never heard of commented on someone's post (c) I run to the end of feed very quickly. If I could just see only what my friends are posting in chronological order I'd actually use it a bit more often, but as far as I'm aware that is not a possibility.

There is a bald eagle nest practically in my back yard. They really have made a resurgence. I can see it from the back yard.
