Thoughts on the Vegas Golden Knights?

I can't see how a Las Vegas team is a good idea lol. It'll be tough for the players to focus while at home. It'll be tough for consistency in the fan-base. Of course most of this is due to gambling and basically the lifestyle of that city. The team will likely be dependant on consistent corporate sponsorship more than any other city for long-term survival.

But I am excited about seeing them play.

 I'm sure they'll be fine.

They'll probably end up last in their division, but I think Colorado, and Detroit are in worst situations. Fluery should at least get them a 28-32 win season. Probably a bottom 5 team, they'll get a good defender in the draft whether it's Dahlin 1st Overall, or get a McIsaac, Merkley, Hughes, Boqvist or Wilde if they don't get the 1st overall.

It does when you only get 2 extra games against those weak teams. Plus the Central has the weak Avs

We're in a league where superior teams at the lower playoff level will set themselves apart by maybe 5 points. 3 weak teams x 2 extra games = a pool of 12 points, or an 8 point lead over the Central with only 1 team to beat up on. This already kept the central from getting both wild card spots this past season, and adding one extra bad team will make the effect even more pronounced.

Btw, I think it's likely that both divisions have 4 playoff teams, just because Vancouver and Arizona will be a bit better than people think. However, it's pretty likely that Colorado will get more than 48 points as well, since that total is just crazy low.

Overly optimistic imo. I don't see them winning more than 15 games

Fleury could get them 30 wins if they had a #1 and a #2 defenseman. It's debatable if they even have a legit #3.

That defense is abysmal and everyone is in over their heads.

I can't see them being worse than Ottawa or Washington in their first season in the league. I think they will suck about as much as Columbus did in theirs. Fleury will be their most important player easily. A great goalie can help a useless team look mediocre.

You sound incredibly naive, where are all these assumptions coming from. Have you ever lived in Vegas? I have a friend that has lived in Vegas for over 10 years. They never visit the strip unless it's to see a show or to meet up with out of town friends. Vegas is more than just the strip, and the residents there quickly grow tired of that area unless they need to visit it.

I will concede that it does make it easier for abuse bad habits if they live in LV, but it's no different than any other city like New York.

Have a hard time seeing them finishing ahead of anyone. However, they won't be historically bad.

come on HF - if they had given up 9 goals in their first game, it would be all over here.

But they SCORE 9?!?! crickets...

Pretty awesome result for first official time on the ice.

I mean it was essentially a prospects game for both they and Vancouver. They didn't even have any regulars I think. Not that either team has much to begin with

They're gonna be beat pretty bad this year and there's going to be a ton of talk about how Vegas a bad choice for the NHL, and I'm honestly nut sure if I agree with that or not yet.

They should be respectable before too long if their picks form this year mostly succeed. Glass is going to be a gem, really, really wish he somehow fell to 7.

Lets not put too much weight in pre-season games. Especially last night, as Vancouver's entire pro team was on a flight for their game in China.

On top of that, two or three years ago, I believe the 2014 had over a 100 point pace in pre-season only to draft in the top 5. Last year, Colorado I believe went undefeated and many said they were having a bounce back season.

VGK had barely any regulars either.

You are correct pre-season games can't be used as an indication of what to expect moving forward, especially when it was basically a prospect game.

However what the game showed us was that Vegas really has some nice prospects, and they looked a lot better than the Canucks young guys.

Half the posters here are assuming they'll do significantly better than any expansion team of the last 30+ years.
Expect them to be very, very bad. If they don't finish last by 20 points, be surprised. If they don't finish in the cellar, be shocked and amazed.
