Thoughts on the Vegas Golden Knights?

16-17 avalanche still had MacKinnon, Duchene, Rantanen, and Landeskog for 75+ games each.

I repeat when I say that Vegas has zero skaters of that calibur.

COL Landeskog 72 gp 33p
VGK Smith 80 gp 37p
COL Rantanen 75gp 38p
VGK Neal 70gp 40p
VGK Marchesseault 75GP 50p
VGK Shipachyov (KHL) 50gp 76p (I'll grant you there's a difference between the KHL and NHL but most prognosticators project him around 50-55 points for this year.

I mean I'll grant you that Rantanen is only 20 but we don't know how much his points will spike and Landeskog really doesn't have much of an excuse

Any team with David Clarkson as their highest paid skater is in for a world of hurt. They will finish dead last, but that is a good thing with the top shelf talent available in next year's draft.

Implying Clarkson will be utilized like usual top paid players will be. That's quite the equivalency you're making there. He's a cap dump. That should be obvious.

In any case, the lineup is probably going to look like

Perron-Shipachyov-Neal
Lindberg-Eakin-Marchessault
Carrier-Haula-Smith
Nosek-Karlsson-Leipsic

I doubt Clarkson even sees the regular lineup.

They had a poor season last year. Had an influx of new players and a revamped coaching staff this offseason but is that really enough for a playoff berth? No, it is not.

From Elliotte Freidman's 31 thoughts...

"7. Vegas has 11 defencemen on one-way contracts. The Golden Knights are an ideal trade partner, but it’s a bit of poker — other clubs might wait until waivers become a factor. Vegas had the hammer around the expansion draft and wielded it. Now, it’s the reverse."

Garrison, Jason
Sbisa, Luca
Stoner, Clayton
Schmidt, Nate
McNabb, Brayden
Merrill, Jon
Miller, Colin
Engelland, Deryk
Theodore, Shea
Reinhart, Griffin
Hunt, Brad

I'm guessing Merrill, Reinhart, and Stoner will be on waivers/ traded before the season starts.

Sbisa, Stoner, Hunt and Theodore sent down I think. Don't think anyone would even think about claiming the first 3

Should set a goal of some sort, so maybe 60 points. Obviously they'll tow the company line and hint at playoffs but a realistic internal goal gives everyone something to strive for that is genuinely achievable.

Around 45-50 points. They'll be awful for 4-5 years, maybe more.

I think they're closer to becoming respectable than a handful of teams. Not in the sense that they're better on paper than any team in the league (they're not), but at least they can look themselves in the mirror, see where they're truly at, and acknowledge that they have to build from the ground up. Aside from the pain that'll come in the next few years, it's actually not a bad position to be in - management has a clear sense of direction, and can build the team up however they see fit (more or less).

Thought their expansion draft was quite poor. They'll be bad for a while which is to be expected, but they should've been able to stock up on better young players.

Expansion draft was poor, GMGM is seemingly tanking from the get-go and playing the long game. It's going to be a rough year.

Vegas will play hard to start the season and may surprise a few people. They may even win a few games to get the fans excited. But the inevitable long losing streaks will take their toll on the players and it'll be downhill from there.

42 points.

McDavid might average 3 points per game against them this season. He is going to blow past that D core on every shift.

I'm excited that the league has expanded, but I doubt they will compete much. Their roster is pretty much meant to tank.

I can't see how a Las Vegas team is a good idea lol. It'll be tough for the players to focus while at home. It'll be tough for consistency in the fan-base. Of course most of this is due to gambling and basically the lifestyle of that city. The team will likely be dependant on consistent corporate sponsorship more than any other city for long-term survival.

But I am excited about seeing them play.
