Thoughts on Alex Faust as a PBP Guy?

I just don't understand the appeal to announcers like Faust. Says nothing interesting, never makes you laugh, gives zero insight to the game.

Only way to like this guy is if you just want to listen to a "good announcer voice" and never want to hear anything that might offend anyone.

He is as bland and milquetoast as it gets.

I disagree with everything you wrote.

Faust does a fine job with Kings, and his national work for the juniors is good as well.

I get the feeling that you (and all Faust haters) would hate any announcer not named Bob Miller. Time to move on... - really :whine:

It's tough. I like his voice, he is just young and raw. It's clear hockey isn't his sport of passion and he doesn't have a masterful eye for the game which leads to saying stupid stuff or asking stupid questions of Fox. He makes quite a few mistakes per broadcast which I am assuming would drop in time. He has no chemistry with Fox and he is following someone he cannot possibly match his predecessor off the bat. If he was given decades and a new color guy he does have the potential to be great. It's just a painful transition for the fanbase who was used to Bob for so long.

I don't even care all that much about Bob Miller (No disrespect to a LA sports legend). I don't like Faust because he's boring and I'd rather listen to someone who was fun or interesting.

And even in your response to me is that he "does a fine job" lol. I don't even disagree with that and I don't think you actually disagree with me all that much. He does do a fine job, he's just boring. Different expectations.

I remember when Bob needed to take a reduced role due to his health and they had some great announcers filling in for him (Thorne, Strangis, Cuthbert and Jiggs McDonald). I think due to the respect he had around the league, these guys agreed to help him out and it was great hearing them call the game. If I remember correctly, Bob had another health scare later that season and Strangis agreed to do more games. I really wished they offered Strangis the job for at least a couple of seasons because he worked well with Fox and I liked his PBP style. I like Jim, but him and Faust really don't work well together. I kind of feel like one of them needs to go to make the broadcast better.

Yeah, of the fill-ins in '16-17, I too liked Ralph Strangis the best. I liked his voice, demeanor, and like you said, he seemed to command respect/deference from Fox, the current lack thereof IMHO being Faust's biggest problem. Faust has a good announcer 's voice, but he consistently makes major mistakes with names and plays and engages in side-bars with Fox way too often (this is of course also Fox's fault; but again, Strangis was much better at controlling the broadcast).

The bottom-line for me is: if they had hired a new color analyst when Bob left, Faust eventually might have grown into a good PBP guy for the Kings. He's just a disaster working with Fox, and since the later probably isn't going anywhere anytime soon, I'm still hopeful the Wheel of Fortune lands on Faust's name for the 'Jeopardy' gig...

He's not good & I wish they'd replace him. And I'm super sick and tired of people defending him like he's their 5 year old playing soccer for the first time. "Just give him a chance," "He's trying really hard," "I'm sure he'll get better." This a professional paid position for a professional sport. Either be good at it or get replaced. Like all the players, coaches, managers, etc. You got a fair shot but you can't hack it. He might be a wonderful guy, but his PBP work is terrible.

Has anyone listened to Fox and Faust? Fox is somehow even worse on the podcast. Grating vocal fry, very slow paced, and lots of long pauses.

I think I’m more willing to give Faust a longer leash bc he’a really young and seems to do better with different analysts on NBC. Might be time for Fox to leave the booth.

The problem with Faust is that he's milquetoast.

He does his job fine - he's just boring. I certainly don't want a screamer. God help us if the Kings got a guy like Emrick that just yells the same half dozen catchphrases over and over again.

We were so spoiled by Bob... a man who just seemed so knowledgeable and was so interested in the game, always had intelligent things to say, just the perfect touch of humor, and an uncanny ability to balance emotion and energy level in his voice to keep you hooked for a solid 60 minutes every night.

I don't know how you find another guy like that.

But unfortunately, Faust isn't that guy. Faust seems like he's narrating the menu at Dairy Queen, or doing voiceover work for the phone directory.

You guys should mention to fox on Twitter that he needs to change something he'll retweet you so all the smooth brains attack you lol

In the trial announcers effort, Faust was easily the best candidate. It wasn't even close (he even blew Thorne out of the water).

Former recent players do a great job because they know the game. Stoll has done a great job so far and his more reserved personality would give Faust some room to actually run everything. He reminds me of Jody Shelley a little bit, and he’s been doing a great job on some of the National games.

Didn't McSorely do 10 +/- games (color) for the Kings a while back??

And color for SJ for 1 or 2 years...?

He was surprisingly good.

Not a fan. To be fair, he does have a good voice, and both Faust and Fox seem better away from each other. He just strikes me as relatively unknowledgeable and kind of lazy.

He gets names wrong a lot. And not just in the normal manner. He mixes up Kings who are RH shots with Kings who are LH shots.

He sometimes seems slow to recognize what happened or just doesn't know what happened until someone fills him in. In the first game against Colorado this season, the Kings were on a PK, took another penalty, and the Avs scored. So the King in the box comes out, and the King who just took the penalty goes in. A really basic hockey sequence, and Faust was completely lost until the guys in the truck filled him in a couple minutes later. Don't know where Fox was on this. He was quiet, and I assume he missed the play
(maybe he was looking at a stat or roster sheet).

Both Faust and Fox didn't know that a year was ticking off Kupari's contract this year regardless of how many games he played. Blake had to text Fox to fill them in. I found their reactions telling (I'm paraphrasing):
Faust: Geez, it must be tough being a fan in today's NHL, with all these complicated CBA rules and 2 expansion drafts in a few years.
Fox: I'm sorry for misinforming you. It's my job to know this.

The thing I absolutely hate about Fox is when he says "Great look guys". Hey Jimmy!! their job is to point cameras at the puck. Not too difficult Jimmy.
Fox was a(9 year) NHL player...Faust was/is a Donkey with a big mouth...kinda like the Loud Mouthed Schnook!!!

Faust's voice is grating on the nerves and makes me tune into the oppositions broadcasters...unless its Colorado's them guys are pretty stupid on the level of the Loud Mouthed Schnook Faust!

You know Fox played 9 years with the Kings and has a 0.83 PPG average! Fox knows the game,Faust doesn't... hell he struggles to know the name of the players on the Kings! And the opposition its worse,he's freaking annoying because he thinks he knows everything and tries reinvent the game with his stupid comments and dumber similes

Stoll has as much charisma as John Tavares.
