I like MB for some things and for fruits and veggies (and meat) Hannaford has better quality

I go to Biancos in Medford for most of my meat and get the occasional butcher box delivery. I go to Wilson Farm a few times a month for produce and do the bulk of the rest of my shopping at MB

It's Friday so here are some questions

1) Do you have a tattoo or tattoos? If so, what is your favourite and do you have any that you regret?

2) What is your favourite season and why? Least enjoyable season?

3) Do you have a garden, if so, what do you grow - veggies, flowers, native plants? Allotments are becoming more popular, would you ever consider getting one if you don't live where you can garden?

4) Do you fish? What was your biggest catch?

5) Would you ever live in a house that was notoriously haunted?
1. No, though I have considered it.

2. Fall because of the colors, football and hockey come back, and I like pumpkin flavored things. I hate Summer, don’t like the heat, always confused as to why so many love it.

3. I don’t, I have a bad success rate with plants. If I did I would like to grow banana peppers and preserve them for later.

4. I do, I don’t have any big catches. Not very good. Just some smaller sized fish. More of a relaxing hobby then anything else.

5. Yes, I don’t believe in ghosts.

I miss MB but am pretty much Hannaford and BJs up here in VT

When I was in MA I shopped at Whole Foods and MB. Despite the knocks against WF, their store brand was top notch and pretty much the same price as the natures promise at Stop and Shop/Hannaford. MB was starting to step up their organic game for store brands as I was leaving, I bet it is a lot better now.

I miss Costco too. BJs is OK but being able to show at MB and Costco was like getting the two best grocery stores in the USA for quality, employee satisfaction. etc. Costco also had cheap eyecare and I once for a Mortgage through them.

1. No tatty's yet, but I am considering getting one.
2. Fall. I hate winter. Everything is dormant, grey and slushy.
3. Yes I have a garden. Tomtatos, Cucumber, Peppers, Lettuce, Radishes and a bunch of herbs in pots on the back deck.
4. Love, Love, LOVE to fish. Freshwater, Saltwater, Fly fishing, paddle board fishing, beach fishing. I only keep what I eat. These two guys below, got released....
5. I don't believe in ghosts and haunted houses, so I guess I'd say Yes.

For those who wfh and have a dedicated office, what do you use for lighting? I have 2 windows, one is next to me and the other is directly behind me.

I use a bar light over my monitor and I have a small lamp with a natural lightbulb. I do use room darkening curtains for when I am on calls but I then have to turn on the overhead light and it looks rediculous.

I am trying to figure out a solution that will let me leave the overhead light off and not make it look like I'm glowing.

too expensive. They need more Aldi

I have found Aldi to be very good for my basic needs: milk, bread, orange juice etc. but they are lacking in variety. I get my basics there & go to Big Y to get the rest. Right now it keeps my food bill around $100-110 a week which is still too much for one person.

1. Several, my favorite is probably a Johnny Cash portrait I got when I was 19. It still looks good, too.
2. Summer because our winters are super harsh.
3. No garden, big balcony in a condo right now. I put green turf down so it feels like grass.
4. Always. Biggest is a 37.5 pound Laker and a 49 inch Northern Pike. However my other biggest catch is @NeelyDan
5. I haunt my own house

1) Do you have a tattoo or tattoos? If so, what is your favourite and do you have any that you regret?

1] I am not a tattoo person. I have just one, etched on the inside of my left forearm. It is the cover art for David Bowie's final album, Blackstar (2016),

1720780366980.png

Why? Because he was a genius and my hero, that's why. Unlike Morrison and Lennon, two early, exceedingly flawed "role models," David lived long enough to transcend his demons. And, like most Bowie people, he spoke to me,

I can't answer why
I'm not a gangster
But I can tell you how
I'm not a flam star
We were born upside-down
I'm a star star
Born the wrong way 'round
I'm not a white star
I'm a Blackstar
I'm not a gangster
I'm a Blackstar
I'm a Blackstar

I'm not a pornstar
I'm not a wandering star
I'm a Blackstar
I'm a Blackstar

2) What is your favourite season and why? Least enjoyable season?

Autumn. Everything about it suits my soul and temperament.

My idea of the perfect evening is a "dark and stormy night," curled up by the fire with a good book and brandy, wind and snow howling outside.

Conversely, I detest -- detest -- summer in all its forms.

3) Do you have a garden, if so, what do you grow - veggies, flowers, native plants? Allotments are becoming more popular, would you ever consider getting one if you don't live where you can garden?

I do not have a garden. It is difficult to maintain one in an urban environment. Beyond that, the green thumb shall never be mine. Plants and flowers die a dejected death under my watch, more's the pity. It should go without saying, though I'll say it, that I am not an outdoor person.

4) Do you fish? What was your biggest catch?

I do not, though to a degree I admire those who do. A sneakily meditative practice.

5) Would you ever live in a house that was notoriously haunted?

Congenitally fascinated with the paranormal, I would nonetheless decline.

Life is scary enough.

5. Yes. My Grandmother's house was an old Inn from 1700 s. It was haunted.

How so?

1. Nothing yet
2.winter by far. I sleep better, breathe better. no mosquitoes, not as many ticks, no bugs. no landscapers or cyclists taking up half the road. My perfect day is sunny, no wind. maybe around 25 F
3.I used to have a huge garden, but it became too much work keep the critters out, etc. Id do it again if I didnt have a fulltime job.
4.Yes. I love fishing. mainly freshwater. I love fishing rivers for trout/salmon. Also kayak for bass. Biggest was rainbow trout about 6 pounds.
5.Never, I was in an apartment before that I swear was haunted. Always felt like somebody was standing next to me while I was waking up. Creepy shit.

Catch and release...not a fish guy, but love shrimp, lobster, scallops

Love fish. Love seafood of all kinds.

Even so, if I hear Brick say "Catch and release" one more time, I'm going to brain him for real.

Almost as bad as "Layers."

Every season, Brick and Jack would come up with a new one. That, to this viewer, swiftly lost its charm.

I get super sick off Scallops but I love them. It's weird as hell. I love basically anything that comes out of a river, lake or ocean. I eat mussles like a man man eats chicken wings. Love them little shits.

I do lots of big game hunting too (Moose, Elk mostly) - We got our Elk last september bow hunting while evacuated due to the fires, so it did have some positives, haha.

Brad Marchand and Kevan Miller bought a Lodge in Buchans, Newfoundland. My old man is heading on a big Moose hunt down there in September, actually.

Give me Market Basket or give me death

There was a tiny Market Basket in the South End when I lived on Mass Ave. in the late 80s. I didn't think much of it but the contemporary version has many fans. ^

Moving from Watertown to Newton Highlands (which is lovely on several levels, by the way), I miss my Roche Bros.

Stop & Shop = basic, no frills, meh.

Star = Overpriced crap. Always hated it.

Whole Foods = Whole paycheck froufrou. Only on occasion. Even less so now that it's owned by Amazon.

Roche Brothers = Good food reasonably priced, minus inflation.

When I was at Revolutionary Spaces (sic) at the Old South Meeting House/Old State House, I frequented the DTC location. Great, but nuts.

Like, a woman came in, sprayed customers with some kind of aerosol, and attempted to light them on fire.

Lovely.

I'm also allergic to scallops. When I was around 10 or so, my dad and I ate a whole bunch, then went out for Shamrock Shakes at McD's. A half hour later I was Linda Blair-ing the inside of the toilet bowl. I was sick in bed for 3 days. It happened again the next time I ate them and I've never touched them since. The doctor said it's the level of iodine in scallops that causes the allergy, so I stay away from iodine (like in a CT scan) too.

I'm not a hunter but would love to try venison and all types of game.

What does Elk taste like?

Chicken?

Elk is a red meat. Very lean. It can be gamey, depending on what they are eating. I like it. My landlord in PA was a hunter, used to travel to hunt all over, and he gave me some. Sometimes he would cook up whatever critters he shot that day and leave them on my porch. He'd call me up later and ask me how it was. The time I thought he brought me rabbit and he asked me "So how'd you like the squirrel?" was an eye opener.

Elk is my favorite eating meat along with Moose. It's similar to Moose if you've ever had it, but the meat is a bit tougher. Moose to me is a softer meat.

Fresh, sliced up and fried with onions/peppers and then on a bun. My god, you can't beat it.

Yep. I had them 3-4 times now and each time I've gotten sick, and sick quickly after eating them too. Sucks because I absolutely love the flavor and thought maybe they just weren't cooked right, but yeah. Sick as hell.

Yerk.

I draw the line at rodents. Technically, rabbits are probably not rodents, but I don't like them en general and particularly not on my plate.

I like leg of lamb or lamb chops, though as with pesto, a little goes a long way. It can cloy.

Love duck confit and rillettes, pâté, and Foie gras. It's been a while, and unfortunately the Charles St. location of Savenor's, a favorite haunt, will soon close.

Crazy for fromage of all kinds, too.

Yes, I'm a Francophile. (And an Anglophile, though not relative to the cuisine. I'm even a Russophile, though that's complicated at present.)

1) No, I don't like pain.

2) Fall is my favourite because of the cool, crisp air, beautiful changing leaves, sweater time, those walks when you come home a bit rosy cheeked, step into a cozy, warm house with the fire on, baking pumpkin goodies, Halloween, Thanksgiving. I love a good Fall storm, those dark, threatening clouds, and rain on the roof & windows - makes me think of Gordon Lightfoot's The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald lyrics:

"The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early"

Summer sucks , the other seasons are fine.

3) I want to expand but only have flowers right now and some mint plants so I can make my mint sauce.

4) I haven't for years but I used to when we visited our friends' cottages - never caught anything - but loved the peace of it, very calming. I could do it for hours on end.

5) No

For those who like freshwater fish. It's so hard to beat a good Walleye. Probably my favorite tasting fish out there, honestly.

Moosehead was my favorite beer in high school, so that counts for something. I think.

How about raw oysters? Love 'em.

Now, I know I said I draw the line at "rodents."

I also draw the line at cervelle de veau (calves brains).

My sister Patter, Le Cordon Bleu gourmet, enjoys them with a nice Chianti. ;)

Elk tastes like Elk, man. I don't know what you want me to say  - It's similar to Moose in the same way Trout is similar to Salmon.

I had my first ever Oyster in Phoenix a few months back. Loved it.
