Lots of storylines to follow.
Not much interest in the West other than
Conner Bedard - ROY
Vegas - back 2 back finals

But there’s lots in the East

Buffalo & Ottawa - Can one or both make the playoffs
Carolina - Can Rob get them over the hump and into the finals
NJ - Are they the real deal
Which of the Eastern staples miss the playoffs. Boston, TB, Leafs - All, none or somewhere in between.

Agreed. I have others as well for me personally. I am interested in the Blue Jackets graduating a bunch of young talent onto a roster that is healthy and added guys like Provorov.. And most importantly Babcock behind the bench. I think they will turn some heads.

Your point about Carolina I feel the same about Edmonton. I am more interesting in the playoff race for the bubble teams and who is legit. Do the Penguins have a season like the Bruins just did or at least look like a legit contender again under Dubas?

And for me at least, I enjoy watching the development of individual players on certain teams throughout the year as well.

The Babcock story is interesting for me as well. I feel like he's going to do a great job there, we'll see.

I can't believe they re-signed Keefe. Holl is addition by subtraction. And Keefe playing Holl all the time was the first sign Keefe needed to go. Our team is much stronger with Kerfoot, Bunting and Holl out and Bertuzzi, Domi, Klingberg and Ryan Reaves in. And let's all agree our team is much tougher with those additions in. Keefe is bewildering. Failure after failure rewarded with a new contract. The team is loaded with stars. You could probably pluck any fan out of the stands and have a better record. And the emergence of Knies is exciting too. Now if Nick Robertson can stay heathy, we might have another gem.

I meant to put in Fantilli and CBJ with Babs.

Hard to get excited when the regular season doesnt mean anything to us anymore. We know they make the playoffs, we dont know what happens after that.

I am probably less excited about new threads here. Like reading different editions of the same book
Ya it would have been great if there was some meaningful changes for us to post about and get excited about instead of running it back yet again

If watching hockey had meaning, I'd add it to the list of meaningful things I try to escape from and try to find something else to do.

Hahahah. It is a minor distraction from everyday life. However I did expect the needed changes to have a better chance of success.
In hindsight it seems pointless changing GM’s if the replacement is going to basically just run the same thing back again. Maybe there is truth to the thought that Shanny is pulling all the strings behind the scenes……..anyhow it’s just a thought.

The regular season has meaning, just not as an indicator of playoff success. We have seen 5 years of great regular seasons just to watch them fold their tents and go home in the playoffs.
Nothing that has happened this off season has given us any indication that things will be different

For what it’s worth, not the changes one wanted doesn’t necessarily equate to a lack of meaningful change.

The grade here is definitely incomplete, but I think it’s fairly easy to argue we’ve upgraded our forward group and acquired a big need on our D.

I'm not sure I agree with this. I think the players that were brought in will end up being pretty impactful, especially Bertuzzi. I think you will see a division champion and at least a conference final for this team.

Why do you try to escape from meaningful things?

I'd say our roster looks like it's a slight upgrade over the group that started last season, but more than slightly worse than the group that started the playoffs. Brodie and Gio are a year older and could be a pretty big downgrade from what they were last season, but then there's Knies who could help us a lot, we'll see. Biggest question is what will Woll turn out to be.

Every game means something I guess. Team should be fun to watch if you can just watch without thinking about our playoff failures. We should win a ton of games and I feel like we'll be one of the top regular season teams again but as the playoffs start to get close, I'll probably feel my anxiety level rising.

Every year for the last 5 the new replaceable players were supposed to a difference makers. The list of players that were brought in to be roll models like Marleau and Thornton all fizzled out. None of them have been able to reach this core

I’m with you 100% on this. I will certainly enjoy the regular season overall but will be critical when required

Domi, Bert, Reaves in - ROR, Bunts, Kerfoot, Acciari, ZAR out. I like the moves but I am not sure if that is an upgrade. Definitely an upgrade over this time last year though.

Missing from your "out" list is Schenn. His departure leaves a pretty big hole IMO, was really hoping we could keep him.

I was responding to poster's comment "it’s fairly easy to argue we’ve upgraded our forward group". Schenn would have been great to keep at $1m and will be missed. Klingberg hopefully returns to his Dallas days but if Gio continues to decline, our D needs help.

During the season I think you will see the Leafs add a third line centre, two additional fourth line players and at least two additional defensemen. They will accrue enough cap space by the trade deadline to make it work. With those additions added to the ones made this summer, I think you will see a pretty dominant team. The goaltending won't be flashy, but it will be plenty good enough, especially when compared to the goaltending on the most recent Cup winning teams.

I can see them adding but not that much because we do not have the assets, unless you include a Nylander+ blockbuster trade IMO. I can definitely see them upgrading the D, especially if they show their weaknesses during the first half.
