Player Discussion Thomas Chabot (D) Part 2

1. Definitely, having an actual partnet rather than a grocery stick was all he ever needed
2. He's playing more minutes this season compared to last, and that's with a 1 minute less of PP and 2.5 minutes of SH time extra
3. He's getting harder icetime this season compared to last

The only thing different this season compared to last is coach and partner. He's played well with every single capable partner he's had, we just decided to saddle him with the Zaitsev/Hamonic/Hainsey's of the league
I disagree with that.

I'm obviously not an nhl hockey player buy I've played D for over 50 years, some of it at a pretty decent level. Sometimes you need to anchor a pair but a lot of his issues had nothing to do with carrying a partner.

Thomas Chabot is playing better this year. He's playing more seconds this year than last. 8 seconds more per game. That's not really measurable more. But he is playing harder minutes with pk up and pp down.

But putting the blame on the last couple of years on other players is simply not accurate. I've sat in that building and watched him do shit that was just plain f***ing bone head stupid. Things that had nothing to do with a partner.

I actually think he was read the riot act over the offseason. As in "you either up the level of your defensive game or we are simply going to get rid of you for a bag of pucks"

Chabot himself has talked about the need to play better defensively as a team and him as a leader having to step in. He's better because he's committed to being better.

I also think that him losing his pp qb1 role was an eye opener. An awakening that he's not the top dog. If you're making his money and not on pp1, you better have a lot of game elsewhere and I suspect he realized that and it's translated in his play.

I'm happy he's raised his play. I think Chabot needs to own his poor play of the past few years and he has stepped up and done so imo.

For people who played the game, it is also known that a D-man will struggle in a non-working system where forwards don't give you good breakout options. If you don't see the play right away, you might just "cough it up"

It works like this at lower competitive levels, now imagine at NHL's pace

Another thing that I have noticed is that people might not know that Chabot was having an elite season in 2021-22 before being shut down with injury. He struggled for 2 seasons after that (while still producing) but look at Norris the last 2 years, look at Bobby Ryan or Milan Michalek before (and so many others). Hockey is a very athletic sport and injuries are going to affect your performance level big time.

I wonder to what extent Chabot's improved ES play is due to:
1. playing with Jensen rather than ????.
2. playing fewer minutes per game.
3. playing lower quality of competition (e.g., second line fowards instead of first line players) due to Sanderson and Zub playing higher QoC.
4. ?????.

1. Being healthy (well, relatively to 2022-23 and 2023-24)
2. Playing for NHL coaching
3. Stabilizing partner instead of a revolving door of mediocrity

Rest

For what his cap hit is, definitely worth trading in the offseason

Trade Chabot to do what? Sign more Perrons and Amadios?

I'd keep the impact player.

When he has a capable partner he’s been good.

When he’s had a Hamonic/Zaitsev/Gudbranson/Hainsey/etc he hasn’t been good.

Took the better part of 6 years to do the extremely obvious play in getting an average, dependable guy to play 18-20 minutes a night.
Traded demelo for a third round pick. Dohrion
I know we picked merilainen with it but that wasn’t guaranteed and still could have used another puck to draft leevi.

There’s a reason there’s the term “defensive pairs”. Good GMs and coaches recognize the importance of this principle.

This was such an avoidable mistake too. I was so frustrated when we traded Melo.
Its why I don't want to move Zub unless its a homerun that is unlikely to happen. We had a piece that should never have been moved because he brings out the best in one of our more important players and weren't smart enough to realize he's worth the money.

Hoping Staios is actively keeping an eye out for Jensen's replacement if/when he declines

Having a solid partner has surely helped Chabot. But most of the things he did that pissed me off didnt seem partner related.

And i dont trust my memory much but i thought when we traded Demelo it was in a tear it down and tank for picks situation. Everyone must go. I dont recall saying except Demelo otherwise we might accidentally tank. And Demelos pick looks to have worked as we hoped if not better.

It has taken a long time to stabilize our D though. Cant wait for Yak to arrive

26 mins a game with a partner (and several forwards) (for years on end) who struggle to receive a simple pass

vs

23 mins a game with a partner and 10 forwards who can provide a solid passing option, take the puck in stride, get themselves out of trouble, and make simple plays with high rate of execution

I am one of 50+, people on this board who identified this years ago, kinda wild that we are still arguing it. Of course, as Green made a point of, Chabot has improved his focus this season... but his reduced responsibility (not just in role, but in terms of the capacity of the 5-man unit) goes hand in hand with that change. Anyone who has over-extended themselves - be it physically, cognitively, or emotionally - for years on end has probably experienced that dynamic, in one way or another.

Chabot has played well this year but I would not call him an impact player. Actually no one on the Sens is an impact player but the closest is Sanderson.

Your standard of what an impact player is seems unusually high. I can agree no one on the team is a superstar quite yet but I think Stützle, Tkachuk, Sanderson, Chabot, Ullmark and Batherson would all qualify as impact players.

Call it what you want - having Chabot on the 2nd pairing gives us an element that not many teams have. He is instrumental to our depth scoring by being elite at outlets and in transition, cultivating puck possession and reducing defensive pressure. Many or most, but not all teams have that type of D on their first pair, not too many teams have someone on their 2nd pair who can impact the game in that way though.

When I think "impact player|" I think of McDavid, Drai, Makar, McKinnon and a few others. Guys that can literally take over a game , any game, day in and day out. Sens players you mention can definitely impact an occasional game but not consistently.

Who remembers when Justin Williams, someone no one thinks about was a catalyst in several playoffs for several teams scoring key goals to win games & series? Lots of times in the playoffs the player who wins games & series is an unexpected player. The stars usually lead in pts but it's that unexpected guy who gets the key goals or an unexpected goalie that steals a series.

This below is what I call an impact player. Without verifying, I'd say the current season will look like this for Chabot, maybe a bit lower in offense and higher in defense

McDavid is generational, Draisaitl, Makar and MacKinnon are also extremely close to that. So yeah, can't limit "impact player" to that.
