Anyone hear that story (can’t remember if it was Jason York who told it) but they were down somewhere in the US playing when they were younger - the other team was supposed to have this amazing player who was going to be a high pick - and the whole game they kept watching this other guy who was just way better….turned out to be Jensen.

Anyway Chabot is awesome.
So Yorkie's had an eye on him for some time 😉.

He continues to be incredible. Been our best defensmen all year and probably among our top 3 players. Once Zub gets back (and hopefully plays well) we could basically have 2 top pairings

That's why trading Dylan DeMelo for a 3rd round pick is one of Dorion very underrated debilitating moves

Josh Morrissey turned his career around in 2022-23 and is now one of the very best D-men in the show. Guess who he played with? :shakehead

I have said it before but if some people think the damage Dorion has done is done and we can "move on" peacefully, think again. At least Staios seem to have fixed starting goaltending and a partner for Chabot, that's encouraging

Didn’t Demelo want to sign here long-term too?

Agree with everything on DeMelo with this one caveat - the four year extension he just signed was for a $4.9m AAV - that's a lot of scratch for a guy who is a black hole in terms of generating any offense. My bet is that both Jensen and Zub have better advanced stats than does DeMelo, who is no longer a bargain. But, Winnipeg is like us in that if you want guys with options to sign with you, you have to pay a little over market price...

I think that $4.9 m contract is his new contract and this year was the first year of this contract.

Before that, Demelo had a $3 m contract from 2020-21 to 2023-24. We moved Demelo in February, 2020.

AFAIK, I think so. Even if we had to pay him 4.0 AAV x 5 years, it would have been a pretty good signing and would have helped Chabot a lot. And this guy is from Ontario to boot.

Yes there was these disaster trades trees (Zibanejad, Duchene, DeBrincat, Chychrun, Dzingel, Dadonov) or Boucher/Roger at the draft but this hurts a lot as well. Trading DeMelo for a 3rd AND paying a 3rd to get Hamonic is a really bad combo.

* Staios has partially (or maybe fully) turned the DeBrincat and Chychrun trade trees around. That's what we needed and it's encouraging, fingers crossed.

He did put some points the last 2 seasons, 54 ESP, 36th most among D-men over that period, which is surprisingly good for him.

Jensen advanced stats were pretty bad last season but it will rebound nicely this year (and playing with Chabot helps) but the cost of acquisition is where it hurts... we already HAD DeMelo. We had to spend a 12th OA pick and TWO 2nd round picks to get 34 y/o Jensen...

At least we drafted Merilainen with the pick we got from Winnipeg for DeMelo. At the time I was ok trading him as I was hoping we could re-sign him as a free agent, but alas.
