We saw his good and bad tonight I thought.

Good skating, but slow decisions and processing of plays. His giveaway in OT right in front of Ullmark almost led to us losing.

Overall he is so much better, but man...he had a few really bad bone headed plays.
Yup. Usually that OT giveaway would have ended up a goal. And it almost did. We were lucky it stayed out.
And I was saying to myself the whole time…Don’t give it to malkin cause it just happens too often with him.
A couple others that game as well.
Earlier I posted that we can’t have him on the team if he’s going to play like that (after his earlier giveaway).

Very different conversation here if that OT shot went in and we lost because of him.

So…in conclusion even though he’s playing much better it’s not good enough imo and I’d still like him moved if possible.

Moving Chabot would be a mistake at this stage. He’s been very good this year overall.
If he’s moved then obviously he needs to replaced with a better player.
Like we did with chychrun.
Easier said than done and probably unrealistic considering his salary.

Let’s just hope he can clean up the bonehead mistakes and problem solved (somewhat)

Every D that has the puck as much as Chabot makes mistakes. It happens to Makar, Hughes, etc…

He gave the puck to malkin in OT while I was saying to myself “for christs sake Chabby don’t give the puck to malkin”.
He makes those terrible plays too often for a reliable top player. Holds on to the puck way too long and shoots it right at the opposition or crumbles and hands it over.
Can cost us important games. No other player on the team makes as many mistakes like this as he does.
I’m saying that’s a problem.

Agree with this.

Chabot has improved this year, but I still have serious doubts if a team can win playoff games with his deficiencies. He has some of the highest skill in the league, but it comes with lots of negatives, and he's incredibly soft as well.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't

Playing phenominally. Obviously one of the best transition guys in the league. Leads the team in ES icetime, 2nd in overall icetime, 2nd in shots, 2nd in points for D, 1st in points at ES for D, 2nd in +/- (+24 over Sanderson). He's 2nd in giveaways; he has 41, Sanderson has 44, Jensen has 34, so all extremely similar, and 2nd in takeaways.

He and Jensen are playing like a top 5 pair in the entire league.

Advanced wise, Chabot leads the team in:
Corsi
Corsi relative
Fenwick
Fenwick relative

The team is doing very well when Chabot/Jensen is on the ice, they are not doing very well when they are off the ice

Now imagine if we didn’t have Hamonic kneecapping Sanderson, we’d be so much better.

We have three really good dmen on this team. Trading one right when you’re finally turning the corner on this rebuild makes no sense to me. Especially considering Jensen is 34 years old.

Sens need to add good dmen not subtract them.

Yeah, with Zub being out for so many games this season, the real downside of that is the effect on our pairings and what that means for Sanderson. It has certainly affected his play so far this year.

Chabot has basically resumed his spot as the #1 D on this team because of the downturn in the play of Sanderson. It is amazing to me how Chabot can look so great rushing the puck or jumping into the play in the offensive zone. Playing with Jensen has really helped his game this season.

On the flip side of that is all the bad turnovers and mental mistakes that he makes.
He seems to want to try and force things or make things happen that are just not there.
He definitely has the ability to be a game breaker in a good way and in a bad way.

With Chabot, your forced to have to take the bad with the good and hope it works out in the end.
That Pittsburgh game was an excellent example of the two sides of Chabot. He made some incredible plays and then he made some terrible plays, but it worked out in the end.

This team would have serious issues without Chabot’s transition game.
Who’s saying give him away?
Remember chychrun for jensen?

Ideally he can just fix his mental issues. Then everything is fine.

I agree with this.

Chabot is definitely playing better. He seems to have the puck more and is quicker which obviously helps him retain the puck.

But he’s still brain farting. We won that game against Pittsburgh and it's a cheery place in here as a result....but it's a whole other feeling it Pittsburgh scores in OT.

Chabot makes mistakes that are noticeable. He hangs on to the puck too long & gets into trouble. But, I’d wonder if anyone here (HF Sens) would have a way of accurately quantifying each defenseman’s mistakes. Chabot makes some good plays as well (in this game and others). He got a goal and an assist in that game, so that has to be worth something. So, maybe they net out, or the good outweighs the bad, or whatever. As far as CF%, Kleven & then Hamonic were tops (then Chabot) in this game. Maybe Kleven & Hamonic should be the top pair LOL j/k.

He had as many brutal giveaways as Kleven who played 11-12 minutes.

That being said it's an easy fix where he stops with the lateral passes to a player he's skating away from.

Kleven's passes were complete head scratchers on how he f***ed them up.

So, how is Chabot compared to Ds throughout the league?

I'd give him an A- or an A. I think he's played really well .. and do not expect perfection.

Maybe I'm an easy marker.. I'd give Stutzle, Batherson and Jensen As as well

I’d give him a B+
A lot better than we’ve seen recently so a bit of a nice surprise but those mistakes are pretty brutal.

If he stays healthy, keep it up all season and improves his PPG a bit, he will receive Norris votes.

Who’s saying give him away?
Remember chychrun for jensen?

Ideally he can just fix his mental issues. Then everything is fine.

Chabot doesn't have "mental issues", he's a puck possession D-men who tries a lot of things. This type of D always turn the puck over more than other type of Ds. It's just a magnifying glass perception. Erik Karlsson won 3 Norris and could have been generational if it wasn't for injuries. He turns the puck more and worse than Chabot. What is important is to actually provide them a Methot/Anderson or Jensen/Ullmark duo. These premium PMDs will be at their best when you can diminish their anxiety levels.

And while Chychrun for Jensen is "fine" short term, it is a pretty brutal trade for us overall. If you'd try to acquire Jensen with his age and the season he had last year, he would never cost anywhere close to a 12th OA pick and two 2nd round picks. That's what we invested in Chychrun and that's probably what he is worth once again with an extension in place. That said, not blaming Staios a lot for that, he was dealt with the situation from Dodo

But in the end, this is another devastating trade tree for this franchise.

This is the best he played. And if he continues, he may actually become more of a bargain. And who knows, come February if there are injuries, maybe a Team Canada callup
