Chabot is as good as gone. People have to face it. There is 38 million against the cup for the next 4 years, plus NTC, which will kick in July 1. Chabot is just a puck mover, but he sucks at everything else. He is not a PP specialist. He is a turnover machine. He will not recover from his injuries 100% and will be a liability with a huge cap hit. Chabot will not make a good return, only couple of teams interested to get him on a payroll. When every team wants Chychrun.

Given how many LDs seem to be available and how many teams also need 'higher profile' guys, I'm fine with moving on from Chabot instead of hoping he gets better. He's our Darnell Nurse in terms of his contract, but slightly better because he is better offensively and doesn't have the same term left. But he's overpaid, has been asked to do too much, will have to unlearn a lot, and is injury prone af.
Staois shot that down,

One player who won’t be going anywhere is alternate captain Thomas Chabot. Staios shot down a rumour Wednesday the veteran defenceman, who has a 10-team no-trade clause that kicks in Monday, was available.

“Not sure where that comes from,” Staios said. “It hasn’t been talked about once.

Dude. Darnell Nurse? C'mon now, that's extreme. That's the worst contract in the NHL and realistically is worth maybe half of his aav. He makes 1.25 more per year than Chabot and has 3 more years with a full NMC.

$8 million dollar players should be able to make who ever they are playing with better.
Those he’s played with haven’t exactly been salvageable anywhere.

Zaitsev - Was a cap dump, played another 49 games in the league
Hamonic - will soon be done in the NHL, possible buyout
Chychrun on the right - we just saw it
JBD - We don’t want him in the lineup every game
Brannstrom - about to be unqualified
Gudbranson - fine physical/PK option for teams
Hainsey - 38 and never got another contract
Holden - Never got another contract

Demelo - Did very well together
Zub - Did very well together.

I'm going to take a step back and apologize, I think I had just had an afternoon brain fart.

Chabot isn't even the team's worst contract (Norris has that). I just really wish he would get back to his rookie year form.

Lol, all good, just took me aback a bit there. I think we all hope he gets back to being a better player and more consistently in the lineup. He could be a big piece of the puzzle.

Why Zub 4.5 million player has to constantly clean shit after 10 million player? It just does not make any sense! Chabot has no fundamentals playing good defense. He just doesn't.

most don't.

I first saw it in Cornwall with John Slaney. Talented offensively, poor defensively. He put a lot of pressure on his D partner to clean up

Eric Karlsson.. He flourished with Methot

It is not uncommon to have a flyboy..free skating, offensive guy, paired up with a defensive stalwart.

You see it in other sports.. See Bayren Munich and Alphnso Davies.. The Dman next to him was Lucas Hernandez. They were terrific together. Hernandez is now with Paris SG. Bayren is not doing as well. Davies is struggling.

Bobby Orr played with Dallas Smith.

Zub has to be the mop up guy.

The issue is, the team needs Zub as mop up for Sanderson, more than for Chabot. So now the team needs a second mop up guy.

Thing is, Sanderson is more than capable defensively. We can just get a two-way RD who's not elite defensively (like Tanev) to play with Sanderson,, while Zub is cleaning up for Chabot. It would work out just fine.

Orr and Dallas Smith. EK and Marc Methot. Makar and Devon Toews. Q. Hughes and Myers/Hroneck

All flyboys need a mop up guy.

The Sens have one (Zub). They need another. Unfortunately, Chabot being a lefty, means a rightie mop up and they are not that plentiful.

Makar being an RHD is a God send. As is EK..

top 4, RHDs do not grow on trees.

We will never appreciate how much we got hurt by, JBD not developing, Lassi T not developing. Now add Jaros and Benjamin Roger.. 2 more guys that flamed out.

We needed one of 4 guys to become a top 4 RHD and we would be set.

Yeah so if for some reason we went with parekh this draft then Kleven could be that guy.
Sanderson-Zub
Kleven-Parekh

yes, on one condition. Green does not implement a scheme similar to Boucher.

Boucher had 3 RHDs that were puck movers. He had 3 of the 4 centers being lefties. He had 4 big and talented RHW.

It meant he used the right side to transport the puck up. He then pressured the right side (the other teams left). To get them to move that way. They ran into Methot, Phaneuf and Boro. And since other teams had skill on the LHD side. They were forced to move to their right, making a first pass a backhand one.

Pretty smart actually. And it would have worked for 3-4 years. But Hoffman, Methot. Cecci getting the yipps! Ryan becoming Cinderella and it struck midnight. Killed it.

So on this team:

1) Sanderson-Zub, means transport up the left side, needing an RHC. And stud LHWs.
Ostap-LHC.. Greig- LHC...Pinto-RHC... Norris-LHC...Stuzzle...LHC

this combo will play with 4 out of the 5 Centers receiving passes on their backhand. And looking away from the play.

2) Kleven -Parekh, means transport on the right

This combo will play with 4 out of 5 centers in an ideal position.
But this combo is way too young and way to inexperienced.

It is why they tried an LHD of the RD side. The hope was to move the puck up the side that the center was on. It failed.

Your Klevin-Parekh will work beautifully if they swap out 1-2 LHC for 1-2 RHC. Now match D men and centers and transport the puck that way. And wait 2 years.

Chabot again is the perfect example of the disconnect between fans and NHL teams. A portion of fans would want to "get rid him" at any occasion, while NHL teams would jump on the player if available

Chabot's cap hit has never been a problem so far, even though Dorion tried his best to waste away cap space (money and assets too). There's nothing wrong in having more than one top dog at a position... the more you have the better, you obviously need savvy management and good complimentary players who don't cost a ton. Staios has been in place for just a few months, let's see how he can manage it

Don't disagree with all that but just to add. Brannstrom is also a guy he has been efficient with. Surprisingly, there was a drop this season when paired with Zub but they also didn't play a lot together and both had injury troubles

Zub was his main partner in 2021-22 and 2022-23
He wasn't worth 8million ein either of those seasons.
He actually spent more time away from Zub than with him 5v5 across those two seasons, about 44% of his time was with Zub, though in 2023 it was higher at 58%

Having said that, at 5v5 while together, they had a 55.56 gf% and 52.83 xGF%, so that pairing was doing quite well.

Is he worth 8 mil, that's a different conversation but I'd argue that if we play him with an appropriate partner, the results are positive.

According to moneypuck, in 22/23 he was.

In 21/22 Zub played more with Holden, then Chabot, then Branny.
Chabot played with Zub, followed next by Zaitsev, Thompson and Branny.

points for knowing Orr's d partner. I thought I was the only person who remembered.
