This is a Bad Hockey Team: Part 2

What has this board come to since ive been on. Losing Staal, our best D-man by a mile. No this is not an option at all!!!!

I love Staal, and wasnt one of his detractors last year, but its not a matter of play really. I dont want him gone.

Who knows? He may go to Carolina, he may not. Theyre a close family.

We could "weather" losing one of the top shut down defenseman in the league in his mid 20's...but we can't dare lose a 32 year old winger that takes several games off at a time.

If you mean reading rational thought and laid out facts regarding the salary cap, the state of the roster, as well as the ages and what can be expected moving forward...

To contrast delusional thoughts of grandeur about a 32 year old winger who takes up 7.5 of what will be a 64 million dollar cap ceiling...while attempting to convince everyone of the conspiracy that is Marc Staal itching for his contract to expire so he can go play in Carolina...lets not forget that apparently everyone is going to, for some reason take pay cuts...

...

Head over to the salary cap thread. Its been done.

You or I do not know Staal's intentions. There are only two places I can see him go. Here or Carolina. Its a pretty real issue I believe. You ever play with your brothers?

Do you really think Gaborik is going to take in more than 7.5 on his next deal?

I can already tell youre one of those people who confuses your opinion with fact and deal in absolutes. Wonderful.

The blueline did just fine last year without Staal, did it not?

Staal gets top shut down treatment but Gaborik doesnt get top winger treatment.

Say no more.

Youre right. Since Gaborik has taken games off, we havent won much. So I guess the onus is entirely on Gaborik again. When he feels like giving a **** again, maybe he can pot more game winners. Its obvious after 9 games we cant rely on the other two to do it, right?

To think we're ****ing stuck with their deals?

We're 4-5 after nine games in an aberration of a season that had almost no training camp. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay to early to decide anything.

so almost 1/4 of the season in, no hint of any offensive ability and hank letting in the first shot on goal in just about every game isnt cause for concern? the rest of the league isnt going to wait around while nyr tries to figure out how to get past the red line with the puck on the pp.

so if this is the training camp period, for arguments sake, is this the team we should feel comfortable with going forward into next season?
im gonna go ahead and give a big thumbs down to that one...this team has zero depth, and even less scoring capability than last season (who knew that was possible?)

blame it on the short season all u want, this team just stinks.

Look at this - still small sample size - but very telling IMO

CORE
  • Gaborik - 8 points
  • Richards - 8 points
  • Stepan - 5 points
  • Callahan - 2 points
  • Hagelin - 2 points
  • Boyle - 1 point
  • TOTAL 26 points

NEWCOMERS
  • Nash - 7 points
  • Pyatt - 5 points
  • Kreider/Ferriero - 2 points
  • Powe (Rupp) - 0 points
  • Asham - 0 points
  • Halpern - 0 points
  • Miller/Segal/Newbury/Bickel - 0 points
  • TOTAL 14 points

SUBTRACTIONS
  • Mitchell - 7 points
  • Anisimov - 5 points
  • Wolski/Christensen/Zuccarello/Avery - 4 points + now in Europe + retired
  • Dubinsky - 4 points
  • Fedotenko - 3 points
  • Prust - 2 points
  • Rupp - 0 points
  • TOTAL 25 points

Regarding the defensemens offensive production in comparison
It is a little better at this stage of the year.

Del Zotto, Staal, Girardi, Stralman, McD, Bickel, Gilroy, Eminger have produced 12 points so far in 2013. MDZ has 6 points , Staal has 4 points and Girardi has 2 points. 5 defensemen are yet without a point this year
Last year after 9 games our D had accumulated 10 points. McD had 4 points, Girardi had 4 points and del Zotto had 2 points. 4 defenders had yet to accumulate a point after 9 games.

The Offensive Core seems to have regressed too much. Newcomers off to a very slow start
Dividends of the Nash trade have yet to appear.
Are growing pains with the high roster turnover and a nonexistent training camp the reasons?
Or are the new players not optimal to play Torts hockey?
Nobody knows...

Some statistics are however very telling
We are 19th in the league in GA average (2,78 GAPG) compared to being 3rd last year (2.22 GAPG)
We are 25th in the league in GF average (2,22 GPG) compared to being 11th last year (2,71 GPG)

Our goaltending (Hank) and entire defensive play needs to better. Simple as that...

So far we are undisciplined too
42 minors in 9 games (4,66 minors per game) so far. Last year we had 299 minors in 82 games (3,64 minors per game)

We have been drawing more penalties though
35 pp opportunities in 9 games (3,89 PPs per game) this year compared to 280 pp opportunities in 82 games (3,41 PPs per game) last season

Which leads us to The "Special" teams that are simply killing us
Penalty kill is at 78% (18th in the league) down from 86,% (5th) last year
Power play is at 8,6% (30th in the league) down from 15,7% (23rd) last year

ONE SIMPLE ANSWER
Fix the PP! And the PK.
Find combinations that work on the PK and find somebody to run the PP (a strategic decision in the first hand - player on the team already I would think)
Sullivan gets a lot of blame around here, but if I am not incorrect I believe Torts is running the PP
Get in another assistant coach ASAP to deal with this!
You cannot get lower than lowest in the league (although the percentage can actually still get worse :( )

And do not ride the top horses as heavily as now (split them up) as they are not producing enough as a unit anyways!!!

At least he shows up now and then, something that can't be said about other players. I guess there is a reason he has most point on the team. Gaborik's contribution to this team would be harder to replace than Staal's IMO. I do however, of course, prefer not to loose any of em. And don't think we will.

No it hasn't been "done". It hasn't happened yet. No one knows what these players will demand.

No. The defense didn't do "just fine" without Staal. McDonagh and Girardi were done by the end of the second round. How they got that far is a miracle.

Staal's brother, Jordan, forced a trade because he was stuck behind Crosby and Malkin. The situations are nothing alike. At all. Not in the least. What about Jared? Marc should look into joining the Charlotte Checkers.

The way successful teams operate, they maximize value, and move forward. While retaining the younger core. If you can't grasp that concept, it isn't mine or any other poster's fault.

Excuse me, but "points" is not a way to judge this conversation.

What Marc Staal does for this team isn't justified on hockeydb.

I'm with you dude; this team is seriously overrated by the fans who post on this board. Time to take the "rose colored glasses" and "blinders" off!

I hate Brad Richards so much. Bench him in place of Boyle, if just for 1 game. Wake him the **** up.

this is a talented hockey team, lacking a solid 6th dman and perhaps a real legit 2c. boyond that, were pretty solid.

having said that, while talented, we are burdened with poor coaching.

i would love to see what this team could do if it were unshackled. i dont mean be undisciplined and run and gun, but open things up some and let the offensive players create. become less mechanical.

this team would be better with a different coaching staff.
