Regarding the
defensemens offensive production in comparison
It is a little better at this stage of the year.
Del Zotto, Staal, Girardi, Stralman, McD, Bickel, Gilroy, Eminger have produced 12 points so far in 2013. MDZ has 6 points , Staal has 4 points and Girardi has 2 points. 5 defensemen are yet without a point this year
Last year after 9 games our D had accumulated 10 points. McD had 4 points, Girardi had 4 points and del Zotto had 2 points. 4 defenders had yet to accumulate a point after 9 games.
The Offensive Core seems to have regressed too much. Newcomers off to a very slow start
Dividends of the Nash trade have yet to appear.
Are growing pains with the high roster turnover and a nonexistent training camp the reasons?
Or are the new players not optimal to play Torts hockey?
Nobody knows...
Some statistics are however very telling
We are 19th in the league in GA average (2,78 GAPG) compared to being 3rd last year (2.22 GAPG)
We are 25th in the league in GF average (2,22 GPG) compared to being 11th last year (2,71 GPG)
Our goaltending (Hank) and entire defensive play needs to better. Simple as that...
So far we are undisciplined too
42 minors in 9 games (4,66 minors per game) so far. Last year we had 299 minors in 82 games (3,64 minors per game)
We have been drawing more penalties though
35 pp opportunities in 9 games (3,89 PPs per game) this year compared to 280 pp opportunities in 82 games (3,41 PPs per game) last season
Which leads us to
The "Special" teams that are simply killing us
Penalty kill is at 78% (18th in the league) down from 86,% (5th) last year
Power play is at 8,6% (
30th in the league) down from 15,7% (23rd) last year
ONE SIMPLE ANSWER
Fix the PP! And the PK.
Find combinations that work on the PK and find somebody to run the PP (a strategic decision in the first hand - player on the team already I would think)
Sullivan gets a lot of blame around here, but if I am not incorrect I believe Torts is running the PP
Get in another assistant coach ASAP to deal with this!
You cannot get lower than lowest in the league (although the percentage can actually still get worse
)
And do not ride the top horses as heavily as now (split them up) as they are not producing enough as a unit anyways!!!
