Maybe this is the 1993 version of the team. Good team the prior year that fell short, then missed the playoffs. So, cup in 2014? 20 years later?

If Montreal wins it this year, we know we are golden next year.

Philly was 3-7-1 in the first 11 games in 1995. They swapped Recchi for Desjardins and LeClair. The team ended up at 28-16-4. 25-9-3. 1st in the Atlantic. 2nd in the conference. Jersey was 3-5-2 in their first 10. They were not over .500 until game #33. Jersey was 12-13-6. Ended up 22-18-8. 10-5-2 to finish the season. 8-14-2 on the road. 2nd in the division. 5th in the conference. Rolled over everyone in the playoffs.

- Gaborik 7.5 Million + Phaneuf 6.5 Million = Cup Get it done Slats !!! Then folks won't be standing around in Hank's crease and we finally have a REAL threat on the point for a PP !!!! Flame away .:D

no need to panic yet. the team has been a bit of a mess. but they'll come through it. it's a weird year. as long as they make the playoffs and are peaking at the time...

The Rangers could lose Game 7 of the SCFs and this thread would be bumped.

"Draft Schmaft". Anyone saying that signing big-name free agents is counterintuitive has clearly allowed playing too many NHL video games to affect them, where everyone sells big names for prospects and draft picks. I'll bet you're absolutely in love with the Oilers' roster.

NO, I'm not really.

Edmonton is going through what the Thrashers, BJ's, and Icelanders were doing - loading up on youth and playing them without alot of veteran help to ween them into the fold. Tons of talent passing through those organizations but you have to have a good GM create a balance. Three coaches can only do so much with a team full of youngsters.

Going back to '99(some even say '97) this team had kept itself from getting high draft picks by not sucking enough through the major suck years. Or is it years of suck? Anyway, adding a top five pick anywhere from 2000 to 2005 was ours for the taking if we just stayed away from the FA market and a disgruntled Lindros, let the team build a core and take some losses on the chin. Creates character for the young guys to boot ! But no, it's always about adding that next piece in NY, isn't it?

Id rather keep Gaborik. In a city/franchise that has proven to be kryptonite to so many stars/elite players, Gaborik and Jagr are the only two in recent memory that come to mind that still produced here. Im sure Nash will get going at some point, but color me unimpressed thus far with him. Richards looks lost this year, but last year he was as advertised. I really dont want to go through the last 10 years of other failed Sather projects, but Gaborik and Jagr are definitely the two that jump out. I think its foolish to move Gaborik if he can re-sign for less.

The cap is droping from 70+ to about 64 million next season.

Stepan, McDonagh, Hagelin are RFAs. And due raises.

The following summer:
RFA
Kreider
Del Zotto

UFA
Callahan
Staal
Girardi
Lundqvist

Richards and Nash are under contract for the foreseeable future. At 6.667 and 7.8 respectively.

Not to mention the rest of the roster that needs to be filled.

Pray tell where the cap space is coming from?

Gaborik will turn 32 next season. With a long history of injuries, inconsistent effort, and no one knows what he will demand on the market. "Sign for less" may not be an option. Maximizing his value by netting a return IS an option.

Not directed at you. But just in general.

On these boardsthere arethe following crowds:

Gaborik is invisibleand softer than tissue; gethim out ofhere!

Gaborik is our bestplayer and the onlyguywho can score goals!

He's one of the NHL's top scorers when he's motivated. He's not always motivated or healthy. And that's an issue when a player takes up 7+ on the cap and is looked at to be a consistent player. All of his goals this season have come in two games. The rest of the time?

Nash hasbeen terrible! The trade was terrible! Nash can't even shoot!

Nash is our new best player and the onlyone who creates offense!

Nash has been good. But again, he's looked at to be a top performer and he hasn't been scoring. That's why he was brought here, to score.

Richards is beginning to decline and it's easyto see; we should probablyuse our buyout on him!

Richards is theonly legit Cwe have and his playstyle indicates he can keep going even as he ages!

Richards should be an elite center. Like he was his whole career. We are in month two of the 2013 season. He has been awful. He is showing the signs of a player in decline. Its a legitimate concern when a player is 32 and is under contract for 7 more seasons at 6.667 per.

Like Nash and Gaborik, he is looked at and relied on to be a top performer.

I if your best players are not your best players...what then?

Stepan is garbage and shouldn'tbe in the top-six!

Stepan is a legityoung 2C with a defensive gameto boot!

Stepan is 22. He IS a legit second line player. Do the math on how many players have scored 50+ points last season.

That said, he is struggling. Growing pains. He's still developing.

Bring back Zucc! Zucc is SO offensively skilled! He's justwhat this team needs!

More grit! More JAM!

We need both more skill and more grit.

Hankhasbeen garbage! Biron is thebestgoalie on theteam!

He was the best goaltender in the NHL last season. He's a sure fire Hall Of Fame player. His number will be retired by the Rangers. There are high expectations for him especially when this team is supposed to be contending for a Cup this season. Thus far he has not been as good as he can be.

MDZ is our best defenseman!

MDZ hasrocks for brains!

He has more potential then any of our other defensemen because of his offensive skills. At times he's great. At times he's flat out terrible. Sometimes he looks like he has **** in his brains. Other times he looks fantastic. He's very young and developing. Thank God he didn't get 3+ million YET He will command a lot on his next contract. Rightfully so.

Boyle is a garbage, fringeNHLer who shouldn't even seeregular shifts!

Boyle is an adequate 3C with a good defensivegame!

Defensively Boyle is a 3rd line center. Offensively he doesn't produce consistently. The 20 goal season put a lot of expectations on him.

The Rangers need more from him.

Hagelin sucks!

He does not suck. But they need him to produce a little more. He scored 40 points last season. They need more out of him. And he's capable of more.

Wait for our youth to develop and stop panicking!

YES.

Torts is a clown and he's to blame! Him and hissystem! It kills offense!

They need more out of him too. He has to allow himself to adapt to what's happening in game more. If the strategy isn't working, make adjustments.

It'sSullivan! FireSullivan!!!

He runs the Power Play and right now the Power Play is the worst in the NHL. With Nash, Gaborik, and Richards on the roster there is no excuse. Something has to give.

Callahan and Staal are re-signing?

Richards and Nash contracts are worse IMO than re-signing Gaborik. Gaborik has the better contract now, and will have the better contract if he re-signs. I cant see his next cap hit being as high. Even Hank. I think both realized they had to cash in before they were in their early 30s and they could re-up on deals where the cap is a million or two less. Especially since most of Gaborik's current deal is his prime years.

When? 5 years ago in Minnesota?

Well, to be fair, those were in games he won for us, per the two game winners.

Brad "Bigtime" Richards and Nash can do the same anytime now.

I sure as hell hope so.

If I remember correctly there was a bit of backlash to Callahan when he re-signed. Questions of his commitment since he took less years (RFA/UFA not sure, dont remember) I think he took the year closer to UFA route.

Staal, well that one is obvious. I still dont buy the rumors, but you never know. Blood is thicker than water.

I dont think either of them are a guarantee at this point. I can see Buffalo making a big push for Callahan since hes a WNY native and they sorely need his style of player. Consider it Parise part II.

I think the most important re-ups are obvious. Lundqvist, McDonagh and Kreider first and foremost.

Kreider, while I appreciate his potential, is going to be RFA, and he's going to get hardballed by Slats. No worry there.

Cally took a few shorter years probably because he thinks he can earn more money. He had come off his best season yet, but still wasn't quite at what we thought his peak was. Sure enough, the next year....

We'll see. Hopefully they're both extended long before January.

Im just worried about being outbid for him by other teams.

Staal, well, if we can keep G and Mac together at least. Still would have DZ I would think, and McIlrath and Skjei should be up by then. I think we could weather losing Staal then.

and he can return to owning us and Hank on another team. Brilliant.

Richards and Nash are a lost cause contract wise. Both of which are pretty bad deals regardless.

Gaborik, you know, the proven one of the three, we actually have the luxury of restructuring. I can see a lower deal since hes got a resume here of producing and is familiar with the team/coaching (granted its all still intact), and organization.

Its not nearly as outlandish as you liken it to be. Stranger things have happened.

Hes an entirely different player than he was four years ago.

Is his health a concern? Of course. It always is, but hes not missed nearly as much time as everyone thought he would when we acquired him, and its really up to management/coaches if they think hes fit enough to stay. He has matured mentally and physically here.

What has this board come to since ive been on. Losing Staal, our best D-man by a mile. No this is not an option at all!!!!

Now you know what its like reading your posts.

If you mean reading rational thought and laid out facts regarding the salary cap, the state of the roster, as well as the ages and what can be expected moving forward...

To contrast delusional thoughts of grandeur about a 32 year old winger who takes up 7.5 of what will be a 64 million dollar cap ceiling...while attempting to convince everyone of the conspiracy that is Marc Staal itching for his contract to expire so he can go play in Carolina...lets not forget that apparently everyone is going to, for some reason take pay cuts...
