Hank is going to have to make a life choice soon. His North American roots are in NYC, as is his post-NHL life, most likely. Does he want to move for the next couple years to chase a Cup? He said no last year. It's a harder decision than many fans recognize.
The fans see it differently than he does. Thats the thing. Fans think the only thing that matters in his life is winning the Stanley Cup, and while as a professional NHL hockey player this is his ultimate goal, it still isn't more important than uprooting his whole family, kids in school, friends, business interests etc to have a shot at it. Most teams wouldn't want to give up what they would have to to get him, barring a catastrophic injury to a major contending teams goaltender.
There are no guarantees either, and many great teams that are supposed to win, don't.
Hank is one of those guys that has said it time and again, he either wins it here in NY or he doesn't win it at all. Many all-time great players in many sports have never won it all.
You really think after spending 14 years here, he accepts a trade to a godforsaken place like Winnipeg, and wins the cup and he would be happy? Happy for him is winning it in the city he calls home, New York.
Winning a cup in New York. It doesn't get better than that. He wants that, or nothing at all.
Luckily, his career is so esteemed that it won't hurt his legacy. Hockey isn't a sport where one player can win a championship, it's a team game for a reason.
I still hold out hope, as hockey is a funny game, and if you sneak into the playoffs, anything can happen. Hope springs eternal every training camp, so even though this season at the halfway point seems like a complete disaster, I do believe we will be better for it next season, and the season after that.
The future will be better, but we all must be patient.
