Rumor: Things Not Left Unsaid - Flyers Rumors And Media Mentions 4: Say, Say, Say What You Want But Don’t Play Games With My Attention

The Flyers are more than just a McDavid away from being contenders.

If management are actually banking in on McDavid becoming a UFA, they are even dumber than I thought. Even if he does become a free agent, there's absolutely no guarantee he comes here.
If McDavid doesn’t re-sign with Edmonton, and that’s a big if, there is zero chance he signs with NY Jets of the NHL aka Philly.

My money is on one of the Florida teams. They’re good, weather’s great, and no state or municipal income taxes.

They cleared the cap but then Jones and Briere have said multiple times and in different ways that they are more looking at next years ufa class. That’s why I’ve been speculating it’s McDavid they are after.

I’ve been listening to the PHLY podcast while I work. I can’t remember all the quotes, but I think Jones interview at the carnival was one that cited that strategy.

Trading away pieces for cap early and actually tanking a full year next year is good at least. Not sure what will happen after, but best case is we get the 1OA and then McDavid. Probably be a contender at that point.
I have a better chance of waking up in between Scarlet Johansen and Sidney Sweeney tomorrow morning.

If you look at the star players that went to UFA recently I’m sure location &/or organizational dysfunction played a part but most of these guys were trying to leave situations where the team appeared to be headed on a downside. Tavares, Panarin, Pietrangelo, Gaudreau, etc.

The fact that Edmonton re-signed Draisaitl. They should re-sign Bouchard this summer as an RFA. It’s not exactly a fleeing ship scenario & as long as those guys are there they should continue to have a higher floor.

Granted that’s also just not a big pool of examples to begin with which generally speaks to the point that NHL players don’t really like moving around as long as they have a choice.

I said if they get the 2026 1OA and McDavid they are likely contenders when you consider the second and third tier players already coming and the 7 top 2 round picks this year. It’s a huge if, but I don’t see another path for them honestly.

Edm could be behind the Avs for top 2 contracts after this summer with those two. Then you add the guy that’s easily going to be the highest player on top? There’s a reason why the Avs traded Rantanen. I don’t see a team being successful with that kind of cap hit and lack of flexibility while trading 1sts every deadline. Add to that a shit place to play. I could see McDavid leaving.

There’s zero chance Edmonton willingly lets McDavid walk. They’re going to hand him a blank check.

There’s a world of difference between deciding to move on from Rantanen who was Colorado’s third most important player & Connor McDavid.

Edmonton comfortably makes the playoffs every year. In large part that is due to their few high end guys at the top of the lineup. That has a lot value in the eyes of NHL players. They’re not on a perceived downward trend. They’re basically a higher floor team with those guys in place.

There’s been guys here who have signed long term despite this decade long of futility within this organization. That generally speaks to how conservative NHL players are with player movement assuming they have a choice in the matter.

Edmonton’s gonna try to do everything in their power to get McDavid extended before going into next season. They’re not gonna haggle on price with him like perhaps Colorado did with Rantanen.

There’s simply no pathways of coming out of it fine with losing McDavid for Edmonton like there was for Colorado & Rantanen.

They would be completely out to lunch, agreed.

I wouldn’t put it past them to try to convince themselves that Philadelphia is still somehow a top 5 premier destination in the league when in fact, bottom 10 is far closer to the truth. Especially with the current coaching staff.

Look how they treated Laughton and EJ, look how former players are brought into the fold and never leave for their pension. "Culture" is a massive selling point that I sure McDavid and other top guys really care about.

Not only will they view Philly as a prime destination, maybe we get a hometown-like discount!

I heard a rumor the mcjesus contract is basically done but are waiting to finalize cause of things like draisaitls wedding, offseason business and stuff like that. Basically scheduling issues.

He can’t legally sign right now. He’s got to wait until July 1st when the NHL calendar flips to next season.

But it wouldn’t surprise me if they have things set in motion for that to happen once that date comes & he can officially put pen to paper.

Lauren Kyle is building some kind of bar out there I think.

They will try to do anything they can except properly rebuild for a few years, and harvest a high end core group through the draft.

Same ‘ol

People need to understand the Flyers, even if Tortorella goes upstairs, are a bottom 5 desirable destination — no matter how delusional the team feels. You have no elite talent, a mediocre prospect pool, a rookie GM and President who are in over their heads, and the stink of no success for a decade. They’re in the Buffalo, Islanders group. Oodles of cap space just means you get to the front of the line for the next Kevin Hayes.

McDavid is also a talent that should be taking up 20% of your team’s cap. But he won’t. So you’re still getting surplus value even if he comes in around $15M a year.

The issue isn’t paying star players. The NHL as a whole loves to create a narrative that paying star players is a detriment. But the NHL is a whole is generally poor at evaluating & assigning proper value to the middle & bottom pool of players.

My point is that the Flyers’ plan may be to sign McDavid. It’s on brand and it makes sense if they are clearing all this space and don’t intend to sign anyone until next summer. They need top end talent and a center. If the Flyers hit this draft and have a top end pick next, sign Sullivan to coach, does McDavid turn down a ridiculous contract? 18 a year. I don’t see most teams offering that. I think the Flyers could be one of the best teams to be able to offer that kind of money. Or I’m wrong and they want to offer 15 to Marner. Just speculation at this point obviously.

If you determined this by going to something like Spotrac’s projected cap space, their numbers are wrong. There’s a high 7 figure cap spike coming for 2026-27 that their figure doesn’t include. A ton of teams will have huge swaths of space.
