The funniest thing, at least to me, is although they aren’t actually trying to tank, they are an injury or two away from having a legit shot at the 3rd worst record in the league and a top 5 pick.

Be a f***ing Flyer

It's the only silver lining on this trade. It's going to make them substantially worse in the short term.

What I love about this is the inevitable spin of authentics like:
"how did this happen, they made no mistakes, at least they have culture sooooo they are not Buffalo - obvious solution is shipping out young players who do not drive culture first and the next season will be so much better"

“Not poor or bad… but just not being what they need him to be.”

Gee, player is the exact player that people here expect him to be but the organization has grand hopes for the player.

Maybe the scouts suck if that’s what they expect but it couldn’t possibly be that. They wanted Makar and Heiskanen.
maybe if they stop drafting at 15OA meat n potatos you might get someone with actual skill..

but hey im no dentist..🫣

They are obviously the team with the biggest Russian edge and there is a definite opportunity to take advantage of that these days. They made this dumb trade to reassure that. They tried to trade up to get demidov. It’s not a bad strategy, but I’m not sure how much legs it has.

Are they? Even within the division Canes and Blue Jackets have gotten potential Russian stars by outdrafting the Flyers picks not named Michkov

I don’t think it’s specific to Michkov, I think it’s a realization that they need to have a presence in Russia. They are The Flyers, they are supposed to have their pulse everywhere when it comes to free agents and players, but they were rarely, if ever, linked to KHL free agents. Now they seem to be in on all of them. But if you’re not in on Russia, you’re just not doing everything you can to win, and for 45 years they weren’t.

With the cap going up significantly, I can see them doing all kinds of horrific things.

Extending Cates for 6 years at 6 million per

Extending Laughton for 4 years at 4.5 million per

Trading York for a bigger, less talented Dman who makes a lot more money

Extending Risto for 5 years at 6 million per

The possibilities are both endless and sickening.
