Laughton and Risto wouldn't even move the needle.

Nobody is trading a 25 year old physical PPG+ winger for spare parts.

You aren't going to fleece them.

The only team who would move their star forward for a package of a Laughton and a Risto would be ironically the Flyers.
No wonder they complain "trading is hard"

I think some of Briere's decisions will make themselves, others will require tough choices.

1) He'll have to go with 3 goalies all season, can't waive Fedotov, at this point Kolosov has shown he belongs, and Ersson when healthy is still the starter. Come summer, Fedotov probably goes on the trade block, b/c Bjarnason will be in the AHL next year (and available in case of injury).

2) They had Laughton on the trade block last season, this year Briere will put the trigger, b/c he needs to find PT this spring for Tuomaala and Lycksell, and has Richard as a security blanket. Lycksell will be a UFA next summer, so they may want to showcase and move him this spring if they can't extend him.

3) Frost will have to step up for them to have any confidence he's more than a 3C. I think he won't be traded unless a center is coming back, but they'll listen to offers. They're certainly not going to pay him like a 2C.

4) Brink will only be moved if someone makes an offer they can't refuse, as part of a package for a legitimate top 6 center 25 or under. He has a way to go, but improved his skating and is now playing more physical off the puck instead of being a spectator.

5) Risto is playing great, and RHD is a short-term hole, if they trade him at the TDL it's a sure sign they're not focused on the POs. But if someone offers a 1st . . .

Not making necessary trades to help the rebuild bc they dont want to "upset the lockerroom" is loser mentality at its finest.

No other team thinks this way.

They think by having the hardest working team, and the best locker room it will elevate them past clubs who have more talent.

The path to the playoffs, and once you’re in - anything can happen.

The same BS philosophies we have seen forever. Slugs evolve at a faster rate.

Having structure both helps evaluate your current player and reveals the weaknesses that have to be addressed. This team is getting faster and playing a fast paced style of play. Don't want to mess with that, that's your team identity going forward.

Clubhouse chemistry has value, especially in sports where it's a long season and a HC can't give "It's like letting someone break into your house, rape your wife and kill your children." speech every week [brownie points if you can identify the HC!].

But if you're rebuilding, it's chemistry 3-4 years down the road as well.
So at some point Sanheim, TK, York, etc. have to set the tone in the clubhouse, not Laughton, Seeler or Hathaway.

Eventually you have to move on from the older veterans.
Though it's much easier when someone offers you a 1st rd pick v a 5th rd pick.

Its pretty obvious this is Coots/TK/Sanheims team. Laughton has been irrelevant.

Work ethic primarily shows itself in player development, when young players come in the fall and show significant improvement, that's usually someone who spent the summer working hard.
Work ethic and IQ are the two "intangibles" that I feel are strongly correlated with prospects exceeding expectations.

Motor is about playing hard every shift. It's necessary but not sufficient, especially if you're playing an up tempo style focused on forechecking and back checking. Doubt a player without a high motor will survive very long with Brind'Amour.

Grit is about paying your dues, jumping into board battles to keep the puck, going to the net even when a smaller player is going to be treated like a Pinata. Briere has first hand experience with this.

Motor and Grit are "hamburger helper" to talent, they can't replace talent, but they help a player and team get the most out of the talent they have.

So if they're doing all this great stuff that helps them correctly evaluate players, why are they almost always wrong in their evaluations? Are you saying they're actually more incompetent than we thought? They'd have to be, if they're doing all this correct stuff to help them make evaluations more easily, and are still failing.

Who were "they" wrong about?
AV not liking Ghost or Voracek is neither about evaluation or the current FO.

There is no "they" and this organization is run perfectly, and I for one have enjoyed all the PO series wins (eh, 1) over the past 10 years.

I mean that is already the reason they didn't trade Laughton last year.

God forbid you mess with the locker room of an 11th place in the conference team. Gotta keep that mediocrity train on the rails.

One playoff series win in TWELVE years.

It's on point for a franchise whose first priority in a rebuild was the culture. Watching the Flyers feed for the Rangers game, I was treated to the team PR spot, where "the culture" was the first point raised.

Culture does matter, it's the reason Carolina turned things around quickly while Buffalo has drafted in the top ten for at least a decade to no avail.

It's not enough, you can have a great culture but you have to have some talent.
However, the most talented teams rarely end up with the Cup.
Usually it's a combination of enough talent, a hot goal tender and a winning culture.
When you keep coming up short like Toronto, "luck" is unlikely to be the explanation.

The reason that the most talented teams don’t win the cup is not because a lack of culture. In general hockey has a ridiculous amount of variance. The best teams typically win about 60% of the time…

Winning a lot seems to contribute very well to a team's culture.

Culture has nothing to do with Carolina turning around.

Culture is a thing that follows. Not the thing that leads. It grows naturally. The Flyers think you can force it.
