I agree with people saying if they move those picks they should target another first.

I believe that’s where Farabee comes into play. If they do hypothetically move 12+32+36(or colorados first) they move Farabee to Buffalo/Detroit/St Louis for a mid first.

You get Demidov, still have a mid first and continue to stock pile assets/young prospects.

Going out of your way not to tank in a "rebuild", and then also paying a huge price to move up to the top 5 of the draft doesn't seem like a coherent strategy.

I agree.

But in the position they are in, in a vacuum...

I think 12, 32 and Laughton would be fine value IF Demidov is going to be there.

So would 12, 32 and next years Avs pick.

But much more and it gets silly.

And when consider that they should have just been worse and picked higher it is a definite reflection that the whole "trying to be competitive and you dont need top picks to win" is not the best strategy and not one that actually provides value overall.

That would be dumb.
And the Flyers don’t do dumb stuff?

They would be the two players the Flyers would have scouting the most with prospects already in London and the University of Denver. I could easily see them falling in love with either player.

If Demidov is at four and they do something like that….

I like Dickinson but if Demi is on the board and they pass on him…

The Flyers got 4 in 2002 for Fedotenko and 2 2nds. I’ll be nice and give them Brink, 32, and the Colorado 1st.

Your post got me to go look back at that draft. I was curious to see what Pitkanen's career numbers ended up being.

Went down a rabbit hole and checked out a few drafts, and man, how depressing.

I'm using 100 GP as an arbitrary definition for an NHLer.

1995 - 9 picks.
  • Boosh (22nd) had a few decent seasons with us.
  • Tertyshny died in a boating accident.
  • Somik played parts of two seasons for us but went back home.
  • No other NHLers.

1996 - 6 picks.
  • Zubrus (15th) played a few seasons with us, and most of his solid career elsewhere.
  • Jesse Boulerice was a waste of space and played 8 games for the Flyers.
  • No other NHLers.

1997 - 8 picks.
  • Fedoruk (7th round) was the only NHLer.

1998 - 13 picks.
  • Gagne (22nd) was a great player for us, won a Cup in LA.
  • Niittymaki (6th round) was an ok goalie.
  • No other NHLers.

1999 - 6 picks.
  • No NHLers.

2000 - 8 picks.
  • Justin Williams (20th), 3 time SC champ, just not in Philly.
  • Chechmanek (6th round), amazing stats, didn't mesh with the team.
  • No other NHLers.

2001 - 9 picks.
  • Woywitka (27th) never played for the Flyers.
  • Patrick Sharp (3rd round) solid career, played about 60 games for the Flyers, 3 time SC champ not in Philly.
  • Seidenberg (6th round), solid career, SC champ not in Philly.
  • No other NHLers.

2002 - 7 picks.
  • Pitkanen (4th), traded away after 3 seasons.
  • No other NHLers.

2003 - 11 picks.
  • Carter (11th) and Richards (24th), each 2 time SC champs not in Philly.
  • Colin Fraser (3rd round) never played in Philly.
  • Alex Picard (3rd round) and Potulny (3rd round) were marginal NHLers/tweeners.
  • No other NHLers.

2004 - 11 picks.
  • No NHLers.

2005 - 6 picks.
  • Steve Downie (29th) played most of his career elsewhere.
  • No other NHLers.

2006 - 10 picks.
  • Giroux (22nd).
  • Nodl (2nd round).
  • No other NHLers.

2007 - 7 picks.
  • JVR (2nd) had his best years away from Philly.
  • Patrick Maroon (7th round) never played for the Flyers, 3 time SC champ elsewhere.
  • No other NHLers.

2008 - 5 picks.
  • Sbisa (19th) traded in a package for Pronger.
  • Rinaldo (6th round) was turned into a 3rd round pick eventually.
  • No other NHLers.

2009 - 6 picks.
  • No NHLers.

2010 - 6 picks.
  • Michel Chaput (3rd round) never played for the Flyers.
  • No other NHLers.

2011 - 6 picks.
  • Couturier (8th).
  • Nick Cousins (3rd round), SC champ not in Philly.
  • No other NHLers.

2012 - 7 picks.
  • Laughton (20th).
  • Stolarz (2nd round), SC champ not in Philly.
  • Gostisbehere (3rd round) had an electrifying start to his career here, "traded" away along with an assortment of picks and party favours for ... nothing in return.
  • No other NHLers.

2013 - 6 picks.
  • Sam Morin (11th) only played 29 NHL games.
  • Hagg (2nd).
  • No other NHLers.

2014 - 7 picks.
  • Sanheim (17th).
  • Aube-Kubel (2nd round), SC champ not in Philly.
  • Oskar Lindblom (5th round) got cancer, miraculously made it back, and was bought out.
  • No other NHLers.

2015 - 9 picks.
  • Provorov (7th), traded away.
  • TK (24th).
  • No other NHLers.
  • Fedotov (7th round), finally made it here 9 years later.

2016 - 10 picks.
  • Hart (2nd round) charged with sexual assault.
  • No other NHLers.
  • Both Allison and Laberge plagued by injuries throughout their development.

2017 - 9 picks.
  • Nolan Patrick (2nd), retired.
  • Frost (27th).
  • Cates (5th round).
  • No other NHLers.

2018 - 8 picks.
  • Farabee (14th).
  • No other NHLers.
  • O'Brien (19th), Flyers didn't sign him, get a compensatory pick.

We also just had Gauthier flat out refuse to sign with the Flyers.

So yeah, kind of a depressing track record.

Tbh their first rounders over that time vs position have been clearly above average.

But their 2nd rounders and mid rounders are bad, very bad vs league. So many picks, especially pre-Hextall, for "fit" and role... who had ZERO % chance of being more than a 13th forward or 7th dman.

For some reason, the discussion today about moving Farabee for a mid 1st reminds me of the popular concept that the Flyers had too many young/prospect Defensemen circa 2017 and had to trade some.

If you're trading Farabee for a non-premium pick, you'd better be targeting a player and not the pick itself.

Farabee should be worth a mid-1st on his own.

So including him would be an overpay in my eyes. Even though I believe in Demidov.

I would much rather moved 12, 32 and Colorado 1st than include Farabee.

He is a #14 pick who has developed pretty well, is a great 5v5 scorer and 50 point player still at the start of his prime. He SHOULD end up a ~65-70 point winger if his development is just normal over next 2-3 years.

Ahh I see what you're getting at. Also, I just realized, Demidov and Michkov both being RW... Flyers are going to have to make f***ing room if this happens .

But yeah, we'll see how it goes from here as it can get tricky. People do need to go out from this team. Wish it was the bad contracts...

I'd go #12, #32, 2025 Colorado 1st and Laughton for #4.
If they really believe Demidov is real, then don't let Scott Laughton prevent you from getting your guy.
If Columbus wanted Farabee or TK instead of Laughton, then rework it removing some picks.

If Briere makes this trade and it doesn't involve the CBJ 2nd they owe us, he should make sure we get that pick this year.

Tbh they played on a line together at times and Demidov did play some LW last year.

I was going to say, their track record there picking in the 20s is pretty damn good. So many teams that consistently draft there come away with nothing year after year.

I cant be bothered finding it now... but there was an analysis a few years ago that had the Flyers as one of the top 10 teams picking in the first round over the last 30 years or so...

but they were bottom 10 after that.
