I have a friend from Chicago going to Montreal for your home opener and of course she wants poutine.

She has seen good reviews about Poutineville but I am trying to point her to La Banquise - obviously she wants a place as near Center Bell as possible.

This is her first visit to Montreal.

I am partial to Ma Poule Mouille which is ironically right across from La Banquise. It's a portuguese grilled chicken place and their poutine comes with chorico and chicken in it. If you want something a little more fancy and posh you can try Poutine with foie gras from Au Pied de Cochon.

Of course none of these places are near the Bell Center. You will need a car or go by metro.

I know this will sound silly but if you're in a pinch you can always grab a poutine from McDonalds or a Belle Province somewhere downtown. To be honest you should be able to find poutine at just about every corner street. Montreal is filled with restaurants. If you do a google search of "Poutine Montreal" you will get a ton of suggestions as well.

She has an interesting day planned. She is a school teacher in Chicago and they are on a small break that week. She is a Hawks season ticket holder and she was going to games 10-15 years ago when the Blackhawks were a laughing stock both on and off the ice. She is going to do foliage in NH and Vermont and the timing looks perfect. She is flying into Manchester, NH and will stay in Burlington. My only concern for her is her driving back to Burlington after the game as Quebec Route 133 is a little scary heading to the Vermont border.

She is a hockey nut and she plans to stop by the old Forum to pay respect. She did take my advice and will go to the Mt Royal overlook which is stunning.

Hi everyone, my girlfriend and I will be visiting Montreal some time in early to mid December for about four days (most likely Thurs-Sunday). It will be the first time in the city for both us. I am just looking to put together a little list of must see/do activities. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello friends.... my fiance and I will be in MTL Nov 17-19. We go to MTL a few times every year and have yet to see a Habs game... so we are going to make our first Habs game a big one... the game against the Leafs.

I was wondering what your opinion is on the best way to get decent tickets to that game... when to buy/where to buy/how much to spend... I understand this will be more expensive than most games I just don't want to spend twice what I have to. Thanks in advance.

I had some poutine from Ma Poule Mouillée last night. It was so delicious! One thing I wanted to mention about La Banquise is to watch out for is the crazy line up! The place is always packed so expect to wait. You might be ok if you go early in the day but if you go in the evening you're looking at a lineup half a block long...for poutine lol! Might not be the best option for someone on a tight schedule. Personally I never found La Banquise that great. Benefits are that they have the widest selection of Poutines and it's open 24 hours. I should have took a picture of the lineup but only thought about it later as I was in a hurry to get back to watch the game.

I am pretty surprised that you haven't had a response yet. There are a lot of food enthusiasts on this board. I believe there is a food thread somewhere as well as a poutine thread if you search.

She accomplished everything she hoped she could do and said Montreal is much nicer than Toronto.

The first thing she did was visit the Forum

and then Mount Royal

She still has a resentment towards this former Habs player but as a Hawks fan it was more of him winding up in Detroit

She was sitting in the 300's had had no problems with fans

However she got nailed with an unjustified parking ticket on her rental car (with South Carolina plates) as she had paid the meter fee with her smartphone but entered the wrong space number. Hopefully this this ticket can be dismissed quickly as it should be obvious that she paid the fee.

She appreciated the history but was surprised at how 'run down' Centre Bell is compared to other out of town arenas she has been to including Washington, Sunrise, Toronto and Boston.

She had never been to a Blackhawks road game where there were very few Hawks fans. I told her months ago that would happen as there are no cheap flights from Chicago to Montreal but if she flew into Manchester, NH on Southwest she would get a decent fare AND experience the foliage of Northern New England and that worked out perfectly for her.

She passed on this encounter after the game.

I had a weird encounter with a Montreal fan after the game.

I was close to exiting the arena, and I asked an usher where the nearest bathroom was (they aren't so nicely spaced like United Center).
Before he could answer, Montreal fan said "Why don't you just go right here after what your team did to us?"

She had no problems driving back to Vermont after the game and is now back home in Chicago.

Great pics! So glad your friend had a good time here. There's something cool about visiting new cities that share the common thread of hockey. I've done the same thing -- going to Chicago to watch the Habs v. Hawks -- along with a few other towns.

Ironically, though I've been to Boston plenty of times I've never seen a Bruins game. Definitely a must-do in the next couple of years.

I'll have to look into those ones and see if they ship out west. We've bought a few different kinds...Rosemary and sea salt, sesame...a couple others. One thing that really bugs me about them is they are so small.

A must for me when visiting Montreal is a stop at M:Brgr (2025 Drummond) for my favorite hamburger. On the way home, a stop at Smoke Meat Pete in Ile Perrot on the 20 for a smoked meat sandwich is also a must.

Spoke to someone in the smoked meat business and I understand Smoke Meat Pete has moved on to a lower quality smoked meat supplier, so not sure if it's a destination anymore.
