The Vancouver Media Thread | Part VIII

I don’t know where else to put this—has anyone else noticed a distinctive shift in tone at r/canucks this year? I rarely post there but I do browse.

It’s gone from being a fairly self-deprecating meme-first community—to being abnormally full of posters with abnormally rose colored glasses who fangirl over players.

Critical or self-deprecating posts seem to get downvoted very quickly. Like—that’s not the Canucks community. I’ve been around a while. Even the old Canucks.com forums were never quite like that.

Am I out of touch? Or are the children wrong? Or are the Canucks astroturfing their subreddit?

For what it's worth it was also like that during 90% of the Benning era. Any sort of (very valid) criticism would get downvoted to oblivion.

I don't remember fully, but an NHL team (Oilers?) got caught astroturfing on this site a while back

100% on the first bit. Then it kind of slid into a non serious low quality meme site. I used to frequent it and started to feel like that meme of Steve Buscemi "hello fellow kids" and started to visit less and less and post here more because the age and maturity level was more my speed.

That’s Reddit in a nutshell—because of the moderation and upvote system, all team subs tend to lean a certain way over time.

r/Canucks were big Benning boosters for years, and that general optimism has mostly stuck around.

The sub also skews pretty young, which explains all the meme-heavy posts—but also the lack of historical cynicism that longer-term fans of the team tend to have.

I've never really had a problem with Patrick Johnston. But he is sure getting on my nerves now

He basically said that Tocchet leaving was 100% because of Hughs future. And all he talks about now is Hughs leaving. This is a league where Mcdavid and Draisitle stayed in Edmonton. The 2 best players in the world. But woe is us, why would Hughs ever stay in Vancouver.

And I know a lot of doomers will agree and peddle the same nonsense. But he should know better.

Tocchet built up enough cache and was on an expiring contract. He could go where he wanted. There's 4 Eastern conference teams that he has past experience with. Of course he would choose one of those.

Yeah that last part is dead on. After building his resume and being here 2.5 years already I can imagine a 5 year commitment just looked better out East where he desires to be. Sucks for us but hopefully we can lad someone half decent.

Not specific to Vancouver media but this feels like something of a big deal. He’s only been there for a couple of years and runs the entire operation. Very strange.

Maybe he's getting a job in the Philly organization.

Maybe this means he'll be on Vancouver radio less.

What a knob head. I haven't seen any other 'insider' demand a fancy title like 'president of hockey operations' like he was at Faceoff.

We can only hope. 😁

Edit: on that note, why the hell do people like Halford and Brough, who are smart people (imo), still give this guy air time? His takes are consistently TERRIBLE. I can understand some others who may be a bit challenged to find guests (smaller audiences), but I just don't get why anyone on the larger networks or with a larger audience takes the time. Maybe he's cheap? Just doesn't make sense to me.

Maybe I'm a rose colored glasses guy, but whenever I put on Sekeres and Price, or Donny and Dhali it's such a constant downer and I'm never learning anything new. Just endless speculation about the possible catasrophic outcomes as they try to find ways to fill their time slot. Proposing possible scenarios and getting all worked up about things that haven't happened. "Just imagine if that happenes!!" And then to hear someone like Dhaliwal say "you now what this fan base is like!" They are coming off like blood sucking leeches.

I've never been a big fan of Sekeres and Price, but I hear you regarding Donnie & Dhali. Like many from Van, I am a long time supporter of Don Taylor - from the Sports Page days - he's one of the best play-by-play hockey broadcasters to ever do it. But I have a hard time listening to the constant negativety. I don't watch as often now as a result.

I fondly remember when Donnie would bring Pratt down to earth when he had ridiculously negative takes - he now sounds a lot like him, and hope he turns that around. 😎

Even Halford and Brough (more Brough) have become pretty negative. I'll listen to Halford and the Dawgs or Jamie Dodd for when he calls out Drance saying something dumb.

Media is negative because there's not a single positive thing surrounding the team lately?

Well.

An optimistic take on things could be that the cap is rising significantly in a hurry and Quintin Hughes is the best player we have ever had on our team and you know there is a Stanley Cup win in his future.

Anything negative that can be extracted from that is the work of haters and losers.

With the devils?

I didnt want to be the hater and the loser so thankyou for your hater service.

I will also mention the cap going up isnt an advantage to us, it just levels the playing field and keeps us even.

Its only a positive to well run orginizations with actual plans in place and structures in place.

Vegas, Dallas, Carolina.. they will benefit.

Talk radio in Vancouver can totally fill entire timeslots discussing how Hughes is the GOAT though. Just take calls from fans one at a time.

"Jay from Poco what are your thought's? Quinn Hughes, best player we ever had our team yeah?"

"Agreed."

"ok thanks Jay now we goto Prince George and Barry"

"Barry, what are your thoughts?"

"I agree."

"Ok thanks Barry. Stacy in Richmond, your on the air"

"I agree too."

Honestly i'd still probably listen.

Honestly, the more sophisticated your audience on the subject matter, the more negative they become when the going is up for interpretation. The more you know the less you see rainbows and butterflies. It's human nature.

This is a particular perspective.

One could also point to our media as having literally no insight to offer into the game, and no sources so they are left with nothing but drama to peddle which many seem to unquestionably lap up.

And then the Dunning-Kreuger effect shows up as an interpretation indicating that just because someone says they are sophisticated (and I don't mean you specifically) doesn't mean they are, but it can make them impervious to changing their opinion via feedback both spoken and observed.

While I dont disagree, Im saying the audience themselves are sophisticated and negative. and the media feeds on that, (I tend to find newer fanbases to be more optimistic.) that is, the media is creating content that is a reflection of what the audience is choosing to click on.

The media here aren’t hockey players. They are either entertainment, as hosts of radio shows, or they’re long time print reporters. But they really have never been in an nhl room or even a junior one. Heck can any of those guys even skate?
650 does have ex players as guests. And those guys do know. When they talk, providing they aren’t working for a club or trying to get an nhl job, then it’s insightful. I love listening to Janik Hansen. He tells it like it is, and from a player’s perspective. O’Brien is good too. He’s honest. As for the hosts; they’re only concerned with keeping their jobs.
