The Vancouver Media Thread | Part VIII

I don’t know where else to put this—has anyone else noticed a distinctive shift in tone at r/canucks this year? I rarely post there but I do browse.

It’s gone from being a fairly self-deprecating meme-first community—to being abnormally full of posters with abnormally rose colored glasses who fangirl over players.

Critical or self-deprecating posts seem to get downvoted very quickly. Like—that’s not the Canucks community. I’ve been around a while. Even the old Canucks.com forums were never quite like that.

Am I out of touch? Or are the children wrong? Or are the Canucks astroturfing their subreddit?

For what it's worth it was also like that during 90% of the Benning era. Any sort of (very valid) criticism would get downvoted to oblivion.

I don't remember fully, but an NHL team (Oilers?) got caught astroturfing on this site a while back

100% on the first bit. Then it kind of slid into a non serious low quality meme site. I used to frequent it and started to feel like that meme of Steve Buscemi "hello fellow kids" and started to visit less and less and post here more because the age and maturity level was more my speed.

That’s Reddit in a nutshell—because of the moderation and upvote system, all team subs tend to lean a certain way over time.

r/Canucks were big Benning boosters for years, and that general optimism has mostly stuck around.

The sub also skews pretty young, which explains all the meme-heavy posts—but also the lack of historical cynicism that longer-term fans of the team tend to have.

I've never really had a problem with Patrick Johnston. But he is sure getting on my nerves now

He basically said that Tocchet leaving was 100% because of Hughs future. And all he talks about now is Hughs leaving. This is a league where Mcdavid and Draisitle stayed in Edmonton. The 2 best players in the world. But woe is us, why would Hughs ever stay in Vancouver.

And I know a lot of doomers will agree and peddle the same nonsense. But he should know better.

Tocchet built up enough cache and was on an expiring contract. He could go where he wanted. There's 4 Eastern conference teams that he has past experience with. Of course he would choose one of those.

Yeah that last part is dead on. After building his resume and being here 2.5 years already I can imagine a 5 year commitment just looked better out East where he desires to be. Sucks for us but hopefully we can lad someone half decent.

Not specific to Vancouver media but this feels like something of a big deal. He’s only been there for a couple of years and runs the entire operation. Very strange.

Maybe he's getting a job in the Philly organization.

Maybe this means he'll be on Vancouver radio less.

What a knob head. I haven't seen any other 'insider' demand a fancy title like 'president of hockey operations' like he was at Faceoff.

We can only hope. 😁

Edit: on that note, why the hell do people like Halford and Brough, who are smart people (imo), still give this guy air time? His takes are consistently TERRIBLE. I can understand some others who may be a bit challenged to find guests (smaller audiences), but I just don't get why anyone on the larger networks or with a larger audience takes the time. Maybe he's cheap? Just doesn't make sense to me.
