Gore has to be a part of this. He's a luxury for SD but would probably be the main piece of the deal for the Nats.
Apparently they tried to get in on him earlier but couldn't gain any traction. I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of those cases where the Nationals were fixated on a few teams absolute prime assets that weren't available and were more happy taking a bulk offer from the Padres.

Teams value different prospects differently. It's possible the ask from the Jays would've been a lot more.
Edit: and now it comes out that the package was bigger than the original report, so my point is less necessary.

Gore going makes it make way more sense.
So that'd be like a Tiedemann + Moreno package from our end, with Gore holding more value than Tiedemann, I'd imagine.

This is why baseball trade simulators aren't the best indicators of player values. Padres traded their former #1 (Gore), current #1 (Abrams), #2 (Hassell), #4 (Woods), and likely another top 10 guy in Susana but it looks LIGHT because everyone assumed Bo + Moreno would cover the value (which in all likelihood exceeds it).

The Nats were never going to get enough back for Soto but that isn’t as bad as everyone is making it out to be. It’s pretty much 3 of their top 4 prospects if Gore isn’t included.
