Who won this trade so far? Deffenilty not New Jersey IMO. I'm a Devils fan was was all about getting Timo Meier to New Jersey. It's not like he's not staying healthy and isn't playing well. It's simply comes down to pack of production for his price tag.

The main pieces the sharks acquired were Zetterlund (traded for Zack Ostapchuk and a 2025 2nd), mukhamadullin, a 2023 1st (Quintin musty) and a 2024 2nd (this pick would have been a first if NJ made it to the conference finals, it was used to trade up from 14 to 11 and select Sam Dickinson)

Musty looks like a promising prospect with top six potential. Ostapchuk looks like a bottom six center who is hopefully our future third line center. Mukhamadullin had an up and down year but has played well recently and is hopefully a middle pairing defender for us.

It is obviously too early to declare San Jose a winner or loser but it looks like we’ve acquired some promising young players.

I think it really depends on how Musty and Muhk turn out. I guess Dickinson too, sorta? Muhk has been really good for us the last month or so, he looks like he’s finally growing into the guy we hoped. Musty is a big question mark but has all the potential in the world.

I guess if you ask me whether I’d do that trade again knowing what I know now as a Sharks fan, I would absolutely say yes.

I would argue even if the none work out it was a good trade because the Shaks could not afford to sign Meier to a 8 yr/ 8.8 AAV contract.

People always want to win a trade but if Meier keeps playing well for the Devils, I’d say both teams won. The Devils got a great player to compete now, Meier was not part of the Sharks’ future so the Sharks saved a ton of cap space and got potentially 3-4 young players out of the deal which was absolutely necessary for their awful prospect pool at the time.

Will any of the players be as good as Meier? Who knows (likely not) but they can all fill a major need.

One of the most overpaid players today. He was way overrated coming out of San Jose. Expectations for him were through the roof. He's a good but not a great player.

Overrated coming into San Jose too!

I remember at the draft he was raved for his "NHL-ready shot" (it was actually not though, he could only get that shot off well in transition at the NHL level, this is why Timo's not a big PP trigger guy) and the Sharks really wanted to find a Devin Setoguchi replacement to pair with Jumbo so they chose Timo over Rantanen who is basically a Jumbo-type of player. We lost a lot of creativity and passing ability picking Timo over Rantanen and I cry about it all the time hahah I still do!!! Only now that we have Will Smith do I think we have the Jumbo-ness creativity and passing again.

Claude Lemieux broke the ceiling with his contract

An unwritten rule of RFA players and Claude Lemieux managed to get him a crazy qualifying offer and it changed the entire game of restricted free agency after that

Both teams won, people will stat watch Meier without realizing he was one of the best players in 2023 playoffs for NJ and he's been good for the most part since that year. Who cares what he makes in his deal? The Devils have their 2 centers making 15M and get absurd surplus, they can have one contract that's a slight miss and be fine.

SJ side, Muk was always going to be good despite the losers who laughed at him draft night and at NJ for drafting him, he showed promise the first year after he was drafted by NJ in the KHL and he's developed steadily since. Zetterlund was a guy that a lot of us NJ fans didn't want to lose in that trade and preferred Sharangovich going but it is what is at this point. SJ got a few decent years from Zetterlund and a 2nd rounder since it seemed like Zetterlund priced himself out of a future deal there and now finds himself on a good and upcoming Ottawa team. Musty will be the real decider for this trade. If he's a legit player for the Sharks then the trade probably swings to the Sharks.

As a Devils fan, I probably still do this deal 9/10 times but I'm one of the bigger Meier fans on our board and have defended the guy the past 2 years when he's slumped so I'm probably as biased as you can get. His contract value will always be in the playoffs since he's a monster there, maybe we see something from Timo this year with the Devils virtually there

Well, no shit? He was on pace to score 50 in a contract year on a garbage SJ team, that's bound to happen in today's NHL and sports in general. He's closer to a 35-40 guy and got paid a little higher at the time for it. His deal is going to be fine within 1-2 years with how the cap is exploding.

It's hard to fault either team for this trade. SJ would not need Meier right now since they are rebuilding. NJ would not need prospects that are not ready to contribute. Mukhamadullin would just now be breaking in with NJ and probably on a spot basis like Nemec. Zetterlund has priced himself off SJ so they obviously didn't see him as having a future there. Meier has been critical with Hughes injured in helping keep NJ afloat. Sure, it would be nice if he made $1 mil per year less on his deal but the cap is rising and it will be less of an issue in future years. This is the sort of trade result you hope is common where both teams can accomplish their goals.

I can see why neutral fans would think NJ lost this deal, but Timo is noticeable in a good way almost every game even when he's not scoring. I'm not saying it's a win for NJ but they certainly haven't been as disappointed with Meier than some people think they should be.

Still think SJ did well in this deal too, Muk still looks like he'll end up and NHL level player and Zetterlund was pretty damn good there as well. Add in the prospects they got and it's a decent haul.
