I have been so busy this year that I have a ton of vacation days that I'm not sure I am going to be able use...And they are use them or lose them.

To hell with that. When I worked in banking I had a job where you could never really "use" your vacation days. Never again.

I never felt pressure to not take days...but there is always pressure to complete projects on time so I end up working my time around deadlines. This year has been one project after another.

Department cuts have been going on so it's been a little stressful with an emphasis on proving your organizations worth. Hopefully things settle down soon.

fox attack…..war is declared.

was making dinner inside the kitchen while the clucks were doing their usual evening free range in the back ……heard this massive full on flock freak out, the dog is losing it too…. i run outside and feathers all over the place, 3 chickens have flown off the porch and are blitzing to the coop to the south…..another is running for the cedars on the east side…….

….i get to the bottom of the stairs and there it is….a fox with favourite bird in its mouth, right at the west tree line….its still alive and struggling to get away.

what to do? im thinking i got no chance winning this one……. i yelled "you f***er!!!" and just started running right at it………surprisingly it dropped the hen and hightailed it into the forest….

…..my bird ran to the aforementioned cedars across the yard and hid herself quite well in them for about a 1/2 hour until i finally got her out.

her whole left side from under the wing to the rear looks like its been stripped clean like you would see a chicken in the supermarket…shit ton of feathers gone……but not one cut, bite or blood.

…if i catch this fox…im cooking it and my flock will feast on its carcass.

Assuming you're still allowed to have one up in Canada these days.

Smooth shooting, light recoil, with 5 rounds of semiautomatic 12 gauge scattering goodness.

you could airgun it

you could airgun it

Nitrogen gas powered .22 pellet gun is probably the best choice if he's not allowed to have a "real" firearm.

Better do something though, that fox will be back & will alert his friends. After you have a problem fox, you often have a problem with foxes. If unchecked, those foxes will kill every last chicken. They'll even burrow underground if your coup wire isnt buried (which most people dont think to do) or gnaw open the wire if the gauge isn't thick enough. I dont own chickens, but living in Hunterdon, I know and have known plenty of people who do. This usually turns into war as he said.
