I know there were a lot of comments in the PGT about who to re-sign and who to get rid of. It's probably more appropriate in this thread because it does have something to do with the rebuild and the next step we are taking.

If I look at likely graduates to the team next year, you've got Demidov as an absolute lock. Reinbacher as someone who if they aren't there to start the year, will graduate mid-way through. I also expect that Kapanen will make it as he cracked the line-up out of camp and will have another pro year under his belt after Sweden.

Other candidates would be Davidson, Engstrom, Mailloux, Tuch and Beck.

Obviously you can't graduate too many players too soon or you'll end up looking like we did to start the season which is destroyed by our own inexperience.

  • Pezzetta is all but gone.
  • Dvorak will leave and shouldn't be re-signed. However, for a 13th forward, you pretty much have to sign some veteran left shot center because our only option can't be Newhook to take those strong side draws.
  • I would re-sign Savard on a one year deal, cheap, to be the 7th defenseman. He's right shot insurance for Reinbacher and buys time there.
  • I would re-sign Jake Evans.
  • I would re-sign Armia on a one year deal at a discount from his price now.
The problem then becomes how do we get rid of Gallagher? I think we have enough picks with the cap going up that we can identify a rebuilding team like the Sharks to pay them to take Gallagher for the remainder of his contract. We need to free that spot up.

That leaves this as a projected line-up to start next season.

Caufield-Suzuki-Slafkovsky
Demidov-Dach-Laine
Heineman-Evans-Armia
Newhook-Kapanen-Anderson
Vet left shot C.

Hutson-Matheson
Guhle-Carrier
Xhekaj-Reinbacher
Savard

i pretty much agree with everything but i think Reinbacher graduating mid-way through really depends on how he comes back this year. he was expected to miss 5-6 months which is somewhere between March 1st and April 1st.

if he comes back in April, he will only get 9 games in before the AHL playoffs.
if he comes back in March or earlier, he'll get over 20 games before the playoffs.
are those 10-20 games plus the 40 he would get from October to January 2025 enough to make the move to the NHL? i'd say yes based on what we saw in his AHL stint at the end of last season, but it took Dach, an NHLer, 40 games to come back from significant missed time.

i wouldn't be surprised if Reinbacher needs all of next year in the AHL. if that's the case, i'm not sure what the move is for the D next year. maybe Mailloux gets a Barron-like trial until Reinbacher pushes him out.

Good write up.

I wouldn't bring Savy back. MAYBE if he's fully aware, he's the 7th D next year. He has struggled this season and I have an idea of what his skating will look like next year. He's a good guy to have around the club but father time is king.

Jake, no problem given the deal.

Army, 1 year deal as you say.....no problem.

In regards to Gally, I think he could be in a similar role as this year which is 4th liner/12-13 minutes and when necessary next season, be the 13th forward. After next year, his buyout is very manageable.

I think if Savard is back, it's a clear expectation set that he's the 7th D. He's still a great leader and good on the PK and it insulates us from having too much greenness on the blueline.

For Gally, I don't know if his pride will let him be the 13th forward and we still need a left shot center in the mix. Just time to figure out how to move on from him.

The problem with keeping Savard is that MSL will play him if he's available, even if he lose another step.

Similar with Gallagher, he already should be the 13th forward just in term of game management required to keep his energy level for his playstyle, but unless injured, he's not going to miss a game.

And I'm not sure if any of the prospects, minus Demidov, are going to be ready to fill a roster hole next season. Beck/Kapanen for Dvorak is all I expect. Maybe Reinbacher for Savard depending how he looks once he plays again this year. And if they acquire a vet left-handed center, he's not going to be the 13th forward.

It seems that they are more reluctant to bring people up from Laval this year, particularly at forward, more than MSL just wanting to keep Gallagher in the line-up. The way they are using Pezzetta and not calling anyone up over the past few weeks with a heavy schedule, Laine out, Newhook with the flu, Heineman hit by a car.. it just seems like they don't want to disrupt anything down there more than some allegiance to keeping Gally in the line-up.

Yes it will depend on his recovery, I think if he comes back this season and then gets a full off-season training, he should be a viable option. Not like Dach who just didn't get back into game shape before the Summer.

I think we have to wait another year before he's primed to be bought out or traded at digestible price. It's not ideal, but I'm not willing to pay a 1st or a 2nd to get rid of the contract. I'd prefer to buy him out next summer.

I'm fine with giving up a 2nd round pick to dump him if we need to. Cap going up will help it not be as much of an albatross for another team.

Doesn't Gally have a NMC?

The rebuild is looking more and more over with each win.

We still have question marks, the biggest of which is 2C. Wings seem realistically set with Demidov playing so well and Laine scoring at will on the PP. Slaf can play viola with Suzuki and Caufield. Dach has been playing better as of late, but IMO it's far from settled that he is the 2C that we need. This will be Hughes challenge going forward, the first attempt at a solution of which was Dach.

A fully healthy Dach could still be the solutions at #2 C. And Hage has the potential to become one, if not better.
