I has talking about the future. Unless Celebrini regress for the next 5 year. He will be a #1 center in the league for a long time. They manage to find key player in every important position.

Bedard also has 19pts playing with the worst team in the league.
Recall, Nathan MacKinnon was labeled a 1OA bust 4-years into his NHL career, and the Avs sucked donkey dong despite having Nate, Rantannen, Landeskog - wasn’t until Makar came in claiming top pairing D role

NHL is a very difficult league with tremendous pro scouts looking for players weaknesses, and requires players to constantly adjust their game trends

Crosby & McDavid’s are literally generational - once in 20-25 year players…not the norm 1OA or top-5 pick

Sorry they picked 11th in the draft after taking Eklund in the top 10, and they traded down with Arizona to accumulate more picks.

They were rebuilding since the Covid draft, they started earlier than us.
The fact you believe the Sharks started their rebuild a year before firing their GM is...interesting.

Still they didn't tank properly until Grier showed up.

No they didn't tank properly until Grier showed up, but they still had two back to back years before that when they had top 10 or just outside picks they added to their pool.

It's a bit different than our situation where Bergevin was specifically trying to compete and we were drafting at the end of the first round when they were drafting Eklund in the top 10 and were never a playoff team since then.

You do realize that without Covid, Habs wouldn't have made the playoffs since 2016-2017...

I do realize that.. but they did, so they didn't have top 10 picks in subsequent years prior to the year Bergevin got fired and we installed that new management group.

However you want to phrase it, the Sharks had two years before Grier when they were picking in or a spot outside of the top 10, which means they were adding (if they didn't trade down) top 10 drafted prospects in their pool in consecutive years before we ever did.

The other pick traded down was at 11th going by the previous posts. ;) Eklund is the only top 10 pick in those two years.

Nothing wrong with a rebuild.

The problem I have is this year they don’t compete every night. In fact, most nights they look disinterested. They are beyond horrible defensively, and too many of the young guys have regressed.

In addition, I don’t think the prospect pool is all that great. Outside Demidov and Fowler everyone else is meh. Slaf isn’t a game changer, DR who knows, and Huston, there is a lot to like but I’m not convinced defensively he will be a top 4 guy.

I agreed with you on that. Is impossible to predict the future of a NHL team. Not many people had the Habs in the bottom 3. But at the same time, San Jose does have a strong core of player at every position. They have a good chance of being a successful rebuild.

1G - Askarov
1C - Celebrini
2C - Smith
1-2D - Dickinson

Is a solid core to build around.

Grading on a future curve and projection is all we can do at this point in time. Most of us know these are young players and for every hit, you miss 3+ times. The good news is our pool is deep and our draft power to come is still high.

Rebuild man. It was not likely to happen fast and I fear we lack patience.
There is more uncertainty as well. It’s hard to judge a lot of the moves because a lot of factors are uncontrollable.

You’re right, though, we won’t really know how things are going for another 2 years. The rebuild would have been faster if Kidney, Farrell, and Roy had gone pro more easily. So far the acceleration moves look bad, so it will go longer.

Easy A

They may have some misses, a draft pick here or there that busts or a trade that turns out not great...But one thing I'm now sure of, they competent enough to turn this franchise around,

So refreshing to expect good things coming instead of constant fear from the next dumb move we were so used to.
No rebuild gets an A until they actually get over the hump and start making the playoffs again. Right now they dont look any better than where the Sabres were at years ago after drafting Eichel, Reinhart ect. I really like the Slafkovsky, Demidov and Hage pick, not a fan of the Reinbacher pick. Too soon to tell but for now il give the rebuild a B.

So this is my take on the rebuild. At 60, I don’t have the time or patience to be going through 5 year rebuilds, even though this is the Habs first true rebuild. I want the team to suck during this 5 year period. I don’t care about making the playoffs, just getting the highest draft picks possible and letting the players develop. And for me that’s the key. No rushing players along, if they’re not ready for the NHL, they stay in the minors and develop properly. Let’s not bring in high priced talent if the talent doesn’t have the same age as the core pieces already on the team.

As for the rebuild grade, I would give it an A for now. If Kent starts making moves to speed up the rebuild, my grade would likely change if the moves are just made to get the team into the playoffs to appease some fans. Do this rebuild properly, no matter how mad fans are at missing the playoffs. We aren’t cup contenders, to me making the playoffs before the rebuild is completed properly will only set the rebuild back. We don’t want to be the Buffalo Sabres who seem to be in a continuous rebuild.

Did I mention I was 60? :D
