The thread turn into a discussion of Hull against Caufield.

Come on guys there's not point doing that. It's even disrespectful to put those two names into the same sentence.

Caufield for me is the type of players that complete better all around player. He's not the engine on his line but he can play with those guys and be a spark. His natural goalscoaring ability make him a perfect fit on a top 6 but he will always have his flaws. You cannot expect all your top 6 forward to be big, able to play two way, physical and talented in the Ozone. Its all about balance.
Caufield has some dog in him , he's not great in his own zone but he hounds pucks in the ozone , of course he losses alot of battles but the willingness is there.

Look at other 1st/second line wingers in the league who put up 30 goals 60-70 points , not many are very good defensively , some 100 point guys are even bad at it (Panarin , Pasta). There's even huge guys who suck at it (Brady Tkachuk)

I thought Caufield played two of his best games all year in the last couple despite not scoring. He's was battling hard on the 2nd line and has set up a few beauties for apples. Loved seeing him separate the puck from Draisaitl along the boards in the O zone to set up a big goal.

Say what you want about him not being a line driver, but he's the one that's been stirring the drink on that line last couple games.
I agree his last game reminded me of the Caufield we saw coming down the stretch last season.
He absolutely has to get dirty and make plays to compliment his streaky scoring.

Not sure I feel inclined to relive 30 years of low level psychological warfare waged by the Habs against me

Prospects outside pro hockey are underwhelming as a whole.

Prospects in pro hockey (Russia, AHL, etc) are either getting no ice-time, or slowing down.

Team really needs to hold onto their 2 1sts and 2 seconds as they're a great chance they'll have 4 picks top 40, or potentially better.

Habs should also look at their scouting staff. A lot of them have been with the Habs for a while and you can look back and realize some of them likely aren't good or just the scouting staff as a whole maybe

No confusion, just no evidence or coherent argument to justify that hot take.

Hot take, lol

The evidence are right there in most of the games we watch, no progression for most of our young guy's, i know .....progression is not linear but what seems to be linear here is regression.

I'm not throwing the towell yet in Hugo's case yet but it's time for them to do something to salvage the developpement of our young players already here and and make sure we give the best environment possible for those who will come in the future.

So clear to me that this coaching staff needs to go.

I don’t think it’s time for them to go. I think they have a few more weeks and months to their credit but the seat is getting hotter. You can’t have the whole team look so disjointed.

What seems confusing for some is to understand that ......for some.....this rebuild is not going in the right direction
We just came off a ranking where we were ranked number one in players/prospects under 24. It's going just fine.

Yeah this year hasn't gone the way we hoped but that doesn't mean things are going the wrong way. Here's a list of players we have that aren't even with the team yet. Demidov, Mailloux, RB, Beck Roy, Fowler, Hage... add that to Slaf, CC, Hutson and you've got a brilliant young core coming up.

The bad? Brutal year so far. We need to sort things out on the 2nd line. Dach may not be the guy there and maybe we have to acquire a center to get us through... that remains to be seen. And some of the guys I listed above will get hurt or disappoint. So yep, still work to do.

But a bad season won't undo the rebuild. It would suck but on the flipside it's another high pick. We'll see where things go but a bad season is not uncommon for rebuilding clubs. That shit's going to happen.

Dach and Slafkovsky have 2 goals on the year between the two of them. That's insanely bad and shouldn't be chalked up to mere 'Ah shucks, the variations of a rebuild huh!'

We're years in and Suzuki/Caufield still appear to be the ones that are clearly above all the others and we already had them.

Slaf - no big deal. Especially since he clearly suffered an injury and is probably not playing healthy. Not worried about him at all.

Dach was never a goal scorer so I'd be less concerned with that. But... he hasn't played well and we were banking on him as our 2nd line center. It's not good news that the guy we're counting on for that role is playing on the wing.

We need to be patient and give him this year to show what he can do. But it really is make or break. If he can't show that he can do it this season then we need to get a 2nd line pivot. We can keep Dach but we shouldn't depend on him going forward. It sucks, it's not fair... the injuries were brutal but we can't just wait around for this guy to do the job.

Not sure why people are surprised that things aren't going well. HuGo are on year 3 of what was being run as a poverty franchise for about 30 years. A slew of rookie GMs, a lot of coaches who's sole qualification seemed to be bilingual instead of best available, bad drafting except the last couple of years, and I can go on. The cherry on the sundae for me was when a new team like Vegas came into the league better than what is supposed to be a dynasty, and win the cup to boot. You have teams in the desert and in hot climates that have way surpassed what this team should have been for a long time. Too early to tell about this management, but we are still a poverty franchise for the time being and it's embarrassing.

A very young team and a pee wee coaching staff is a bad combination. MSL is a joke.

Well said Guy Larose.

The question is pertinent: do you think more losing will help turn this around?

The answer is not so easily come upon. Sure we draft higher but we also have the stench of losing draped over us. We have higher value picks but they’re thrown into a loser franchise. No one has the answer but at least we saw tangible progress and could point to that… until this year.

This year too many young players have regressed or shown signs of unreliability.

Last night’s game was brutal. Inexcusably bad.

Something might be going wrong.
