They had difficulty due to the buyer's market, but it is believed that they thought they had accomplished what they were going for. After moving what some would call an overbearing locker room presence in Erik Karlsson, it was expected that the team would be able to make a run in the early part of the season and that that success would be able to be built upon. Unfortunately the team was faced with some injuries to significant players, which made it difficult for the Ottawa Senators to win games. I don't think that this performance contributes to a negative outcome in the Duchene and Stone negotiations, if anything it may add an element of drive and desire to improve which would further entice those 2 players to sign a contract extension for the Ottawa Senators. Look for GM Pierre Dorion to table them a competitive, creative, and comprehensive contract offer to both these players in the coming days. James.

What is this "rift" you are talking about? There was no rift, only one that Melnyk and Dorion used as an excuse to cut costs. Karlsson's Instagram account was littered with him hanging out with current Sens players throughout the summer.

The only rift that existed was between the wives of EK and Hoff. When Hoff was traded, that should have solved it, but EK "wanted to be paid", just like every other upcoming UFA, Melnyk didn't like that. Thus, the real rift between the owner and the fanbase began.

Karlsson, Duchene, Stone, Dzingel, Hoffman. 5 star players that have been moved within a 10 month period. This has never happened in sports before and there is no reason to let Melnyk/Dorion off the hook here.

Let's say you had Dylan Strome and Max Domi, Probably want to keep those guys. However the actual whole atmosphere and organisation in Arizona wouldn't allow these guys to play anywhere near their potential. Look at what they are doing in Chicago and Montreal.

I look at that situation and see a much more toxic and long term problem. We bring guys in like Duchene and they play better here. Canada is a nice play to play hockey. Can't always be said about Dallas, Florida, Carolina, etc. especially when they are losing. These guys joined the league to be stars and they can be stars here.

It's only funny if you are looking at a small portion of what is occurring. Which is Melnyk, he is hilarious. But otherwise the ship is on course to rebuild well and certainly have depth in prospects at all levels.

Perhaps, yeah, but it'll always come down to an owner who can barely pay for a team right now, let alone compete for the Cup with the big boys. Eventually the prospects turn into players, then the players turn into stars and you have to pay them. And then there's Uncle Gene.

I get that frustration, but .. with a guy like that as an owner, the Sens can not afford to have a guy at the helm that is not realistic about the lineup that trades away futures or good young players for a hope an a prayer chance of becoming a contender. All the more reason we need someone with a backbone and some smarts in icing a team that can maximize on the meager resources he is given to work with.
