I know there is another Five Iron Frenzy lover on this board. I am seeing them in Akron next week. It will be the first time I have seen them since Warped tour in the early 2000's. So pumped.

I am bumping this thread to share my sorrow. Earlier tonight I bought this album on CD:

It's great music. I really enjoy the Bulgarian style of folk singing. It's just gorgeous. I've been curious about this particular record for a while, so I was pretty pleased to find it for just $4. Unfortunately the thing is battered to hell and doesn't rip or play right. So I'm taking it back tomorrow. I've already ordered a replacement online because I know I need it in my collection.

Fortunately I also picked up compilations of early Thai rock and obscure American funk.

Nice call! Thanks for the recommendation.

That's great. I knew they got back together a while ago, but I didn't realize they were back touring or that their new album is out in a couple weeks.

I've been going through some of the bands that I heard on GTAV. Might have to look more into Chain Gang of 1974

and the song that was used in the commercial

I was really partial to "Slipping Into Darkness", too, but it's a really solid collection overall.

They call it Volume 1, but eight years I don't think there's much hope of a sequel, unfortunately.

it's a shame because the compilers displayed some solid acumen and taste in their track selection and sequencing but i'm not too heartbroken because funk might be one of the most well anthologized genres. in recent years the market has been flooded by all kinds of different funk compilations - most of them are pretty good too.

Soul Jazz Records, the British reissue label does a great job:

New Orleans Funk: New Orleans - The Original Sound of Funk 1960-75
Miami Sound: Rare Funk & Soul From Miami Florida 1967-1974
The Sound of Philadelphia - Funk, Soul & the Roots of Disco 1965-73

Jazzman Records has a whole series of state-by-state funk:

Texas Funk: Hard Texas Funk 1968-1975: 21 Rare & Unreleased Cuts
California Funk: Funk 45s From the Sunshine State

the Numero Group does some stunning work. ostensibly their mission is to reissue soul that was issued on tiny, obscure labels. they put out a compilation of 'gospel-funk'. crazy stuff that i'm sure RPP would dig.

there's also a lot of funk that's finally coming out of Africa. i haven't heard much of it, but what i have heard has been compelling. you can find a lot of sets like this one:

Not quite what I wanted. I was looking for something along the lines of Mississippi Records' Black Plastic Singing Flats tape compilation (definitely seek that out - it's available on p2p networks if you're not a tapehead), which featured a bunch of different styles of East Asian music.

also Mississippi records does some real stunning work...

check out what popped up on ebay! The African Guitar Box from Mississippi Records. five discs of rare/obscure African guitar music ranging from acoustic folk to electric-driven pop. the box is made out of wood salvaged from the old Mississippi Records store. apparently only 200 copies of this object exist...

normally i'd call this a decadent relic of hipster-fetishism, but this is just too awesome.

the price is kind of cheap insofar as these types of OOP box sets are concerned, no?

Thanks for the recs. I've spotted a few more funk comps at the store in Tucson that I plan to get. That gospel funk comp looks really interesting, since I've been wanting to pick up more gospel stuff, too.

I've also been hovering about diving into African music more, but there's so many anthologies out there it can be hard to figure out what's really worthy. Once when The End Records accidentally put their entire store on 70% off, I went hard after their world music selection, but alas, they didn't honor their error.

One thing I did pick up was this:

It's a pretty fascinating document with some really neat tunes, too.

Some classic Brit rock for your Friday afternoon. One an under-appreciated psychedelic concept album from 1968. The other a classic rock opera from the year after.

I was just playing ME1 the other day and appreciating the quality of the music all throughout.

FTL is a low-tech rouguelike game that sports an outstanding ambient soundtrack, too.

over the last few days, i've been listening to this:

Messiaen%2BComplete%2BOrgan%2BWorks.jpg

sometimes drony, sometimes violent, often times spooky - some pieces could easily be used in a b-horror film soundtrack. i'm not expert when it comes to 'classical music' but i'd say this was compelling stuff.

I have horribly banal tastes, but I don't mind.

Maybe I don't have the eclectic quality for appreciation that more intellectual types would, but my music tastes are the one place where I feel no shame nor guilt over it (although I do in every other aspect, such as math, technology, and politics...)

I tend to pick up a good amount of random indie/rock (leaning more towards the mainstream end, as opposed to the folk end) from playlists that a few people compile.

I don't have much loyalty to any specific acts (aside from long dead or retired ones like Frank Zappa or King Crimson).

These days, though, what I'm really looking to find more of are two specific genres that can be tough to wade through. 80s Funk, and 80s New Wave (leaning somewhat more towards the Synthpop end of New Wave than the Post-Punk end).

I'm getting re-acquainted with Beethoven's string quartet cycle right now.

No richer or more rewarding listening experience in music, IMHO.

who do you like insofar as performers are concerned? i listened to the Alban Berg Quartet set a few years ago and enjoyed them. i should look into acquiring a set.

Not sure if they've been mentioned yet, but Im a huge Kamelot fan. Power metal music with melodic singing instead of grunting.

Former singer was a trained opera soprano. They have a few concept albums that are out of this world. The perfect combination of sound and lyrics that tell a story over the course of two albums.

They have 7 albums if im not mistaken, but their last four are amazing. Epica and Black Halo are based on the story of Faust; the man who sold his soul to the devil.

Saw them two years ago in Pittsburgh. They barely filled a 200 person venue. But if you go to Europe, you wont get within a 1000 feet. You can thank WXDX for that

Check out Center of the Universe by Kamelot off the Epica album.
