I don't think this means he wasn't under contract; it happens all the time where teams and schools allow coaches to interview elsewhere. I think this is just an extension of an existing contract.

Unfortunately James Earl Jones is no longer with us. He may not have known anything about hockey, but his pressers would have been great.

And I would love to hear him argue his case with the refs. Possibly the only person who could turn the tide of calls against us.

He had only formally turned down CHI. I never got the sense that he was 100% out of other NHL opportunities. Everything at this point is a guessing game from the info we have currently. He was either absolutely going back to DEN or he might have been keeping his options open should someone roll out the red carpet and give him everything he wanted.
