The San Jose Sharks are horror-bad

I cannot remember having such a high event and good goalie on the Sharks. Niemi was high event but not so good. Nabokov was steady Eddie and Kipper was a bit of more an active goalie.

Askarov makes you think there always a possibility to steal a game.

The team has been improved but they're still a contender for the worst team in the league, they're just a regular last place quality team now while last year they were one of the worst teams of all time

The 2024 Sharks finished with 47 points, the worst 82 game total of the cap era

The 2025 Sharks are on pace to finish with 60 points, which is awful, but much more typical of a last place team than the previous season total

Only the Blackhawks are behind the Sharks in points%, they are on pace to finish the year with 56 points, the two teams are incredibly close, the Sharks are absolutely still in the basement, they're just no longer buried under the foundation

Last 2 seasons both SJ and Chi have been terrible level bad. 23, chi was at 59 points and SJ at 60, which was bad enough for 3rd and 4th worst. Chi tied with CBJ in points with Ana last with 58.
24, SJ at 47 with chi at 52.
Current pace is Chi at 56, SJ at 60.

Where they are is not surprising. Question is when they get the pressure to have to really improve in the standings and how they are able to get out of the bottom.

I suspect this summer will be an aggressive one for Grier. If they can reshape their defense and find another top 6 vet, that would go a long way. The defense part of it is rough though. I do think they’re going to try and get the team to take a big step next year.

I think it has to be via trades for the big move, along with free agent signings. Very difficult to convince free agents to sign with you when you finish over 30 points outside of WC2. Would still need a couple more seasons to make the PO.

Grier needs to help his HC going into year 2. Chi, also with whomever is the next permanent coach after Ricardson. Can't be terrible bad for long when you have more than likely drafted the best player you will get in your rebuild and they are on the roster already.

San Jose and Chicago are both going to be fun to watch going forward. IMO they are tanking and rebuilding the correct way and accumulating alot of young talent. It will be interesting to see what rebuild goes quicker San Jose who are rebuilding through more of the Forwards or Chicago who are drafting more Defense. I would be very curious to see if either team draft #1 OVA in 2025 if they go Schaefer or Hagens

Either player would be good for both teams, but I think Chicago would prefer Hagens and San Jose would prefer Schaefer considering the weaknesses on their respective rosters.

As a Blackhawks fan I know Bedard needs forward help badly, but I cant help but imagine a future D core of:

Schaefer/Vlasic
Levshunov/Allen
Korchinski/Rinzel

Spare Dman- Del Maestro and Kaiser

I think Sharks go Schaefer if they have the choice. Defense by far is the biggest need for us, he would be huge.

That could be a very good D core, but I'd rather see Bedard get some help. Sharks wouldn't be bad to go with Hagens either if they had the option to pick both, having him and Celebrini down the middle isn't a bad option either considering they might have Cagnoni and Dickinson coming up next year.

As a goalie, if Nabokov is your reference for steady… my god. Loved the guy, though, and need to see Askarov a lot more - which I absolutely will on account of being a Ducks fan.

I think we have to assume the worst with prospects especially ‘cause both those guys have some concerns around them. There’s a good chance Dickinson ends up being a great 3rd pairing guy and Cagnoni may be nothing more than a high end AHLer or an NHL PP specialist.

I, personally, am more optimistic than that. Cagnoni has always impressed in every league he’s played and I think he’s got a higher ceiling that some people think. Dickinson still needs a bunch of time but I also think he’s either going to be a high end #3 or a very good #2.

THAT SAID… we need to hedge our bets and get more defensive prospects. Up front, we’ve got Celebrini, Smith, Musty, Eklund, Chernyshov, Zetterlund, Graf, Haltunnen…

At defense, it’s like Dickinson, Cagnoni, Muhk… we need more. Schaefer’s gotta be the pick.

That said, if we don’t get him and end up with Hagens/Misa, it makes our forward depth pretty scary. Not a terrible consolation prize.

The Sharks should do everything in their power (including trading up) to draft Schaefer this summer and then honestly think they are set for their young core.

After that they should start focusing on getting useful vets/prime aged players and start the uphill climb back into the playoffs/contender status before organisational rot and losing culture seeps in and avoid being Buffalo'd.

Do what Detroit started doing with the Debrincat trade/FA signings except with Celebrini/Smith/Schaefer which I view as a much stronger core than Raymond/Seider/Larkin.

Yeah, watching the games the Flames played against them I'd say Chicago is a lot farther away than San Jose is. Chicago is a complete joke of a team, horrible effort on most nights I've watched them, almost no talent outside of Bedard whereas San Jose actually looked somewhat competent, they're just young and need some solid vets and some quality d-men.

Time will tell, but to me it looks like Grier has done a very good job re-building this team so far.
