I looked a bit at some possible guys that'll hit waivers earlier on. Here was that list:

Found a "who's at risk of being waived this upcoming season" thread. So going through some C names in there:

PHI - maybe Laughton
NYI - Quine
CGY - maybe Shinkaruk <next to nil C experience in the NHL tho
BOS - Schaller plays some C
DAL - Flynn, Cracknell(plays some C)
VAN - Gaunce, Chaput, maybe Burmistrov in terms of getting waived
LA - Shore, maybe Andreoff
MTL - Hudon(maybe), de la Rose(maybe), Holland, Froese
TOR - maybe Fehr, Ben Smith
NJ - Blandisi has 12 games left of waiver exemption
STL - maybe Sundqvist(heh)
LGK - Nosek
ANA - Logan Shaw(plays some C)

Might be more from other teams but thats who was talked about in that thread.

My bold prediction is that Cullen's going to have a miserable season out in Minny.

I dunno... odds are they'll still be a good team and one that makes the POs next spring. I don't think they'll do much, but I don't think that Cullen will regret his decision. Even if we win another cup and they go out in the 1st round, I still think that due to his family situation, he'll be content with things.

I think more that his game is going to fall off. And he'll lose a sixer and his watch while ice fishing.

Even if Cullen plays another 3 years, it will all be with Minny from this point on. He aint leaving Minny even if he retires.

Why would we wait untill the TD? prices are sky high. We might aswell write the season off and forget about a 3 peat. The 3C should be done between now and say early December.

I never said JR should wait until the trade deadline, I said he could. There is no rush, the Pens will make the playoffs regardless of who is playing 3rd or 4th line center. My bet is that the Pens trade for a guy who loses his spot in training camp or is someone that a team doesnt want to lose for nothing on waivers.

Grumpy Old Men joke, I think.

I do think there's a 50/50 shot that Cullen falls off a cliff at some point this season like HSL said, though. Brilliant hockey player, but entropy comes for us all and Cully's on borrowed time. Kind of why I wanted him to retire. Go out on top.

Back in the last thread a couple people suggested the Leafs would be on a short list of teams that might be able to be pressured into making a less than ideal trade because they are over the cap.

Fact is, they aren't really. They're currently using Summer LTIR. And once the season begins, Horton & Lupul will go on regular LTIR, as well as neither Ben Smith or Eric Fehr being in the plans. They will both be headed to the AHL.
In reality, the Leafs probably have the ability to spend another ~2-3 million without needing make any cap moves.

So I can't get that list to copy but two jumped out at me. One is Quine - wasn't he a solid prospect at one point? What happened to him? Remember him scoring an OT winner against Florida two years ago in the playoffs. (pretty sure it was him) The other guy is Blandisi from New Jersey. Not as anything more than a 4th liner but he's a guy that always seemed to impress me when we played against them.

Those western teams and their travel schedules will do Cullen no favors, not to mention playing for the Wild vs. the Pens. He fell off pretty heavily towards the end of his last tenure with them, and my understanding is they didn't even offer him a deal. So I'm a bit surprised they even offered him something now.

About the waivers ... are we gonna pick second to last until the season start?

Waiver priority is from least to most points of the current season (from Nov 1) or the previous season (up until Oct 31). Not sure where Vegas gets slotted initially but we're 2nd to last so it doesn't really matter.

I seriously think Cully chose that team because he wants a job in Minnesota post-playing days. It's all speculation but he's mentioned a bunch of times that his life after hockey will most definitely have to include the sport in his occupational duties.

Summary of TIOPS blog: (nothing too new)

Says the loss of Cullen may be bigger than Bonino, as the team is likely to get away from the "4 lines that can score" model, because Rowney/McClement aren't going to be able to generate enough offense. If Cullen came back (not sure if this was floated or just speculation), Pens could go with something like Hagelin-Cullen-Reaves. Also says that coaching staff had big impact on bringing in McClement for PTO. He says one source put McClement's chances at about 70% for earning a contract.

Says for impact trade targets for 3C, Penguins have identified more players who can play center and wing, rather than just strictly being a center.

Says don't be surprised if we see a big jump up the depth chart by Pouliot. Says some people on the inside believe he is going to shock a lot of people, and Pens feel he has shored up some of the mental areas of his game that hindered him in the past.

Two Things to watch
1) Usage of Matt Hunwick. Says Sullivan pushed hard for the signing, and some believe his good play could lead to Maatta being shopped.
2) How married coaching staff is to Rowney. Says he had good post season, but small sample size, and there are more offensively skilled players pushing for playing time. Pens felt Rowney was better at W than C.

Says nothing imminent and unlikely to happen before the season, but league sources contend that Maatta remains in play and the Pens are waiting for the perfect deal....and that one would happen before the trade deadline.

On Will Butcher, said the Pens figured they did not have a good shot, but were disappointed that they did not get much of a chance to even make an impression. Penguins feel they have a very similar prospect in Jeff Taylor.

I actually fully agree that the loss of Cullen is more important than the loss of Bones. The combination of of both puts JR in a spot where he has to do some work. All faith in JR.

I don't know, a couple of posters here told me prices are no higher at the trade deadline so I shouldn't be concerned with it. Because, you know, reasons and they said so.

I'll bet that Cullen will do better in Minny this year than any 4C will do here.

I agree with this. Losing him was more disappointing to me than Bones. Not having a 3C is a bigger concern than what we currently have at 4C but still feel losing Cullen was a bigger loss... if that makes sense.

I really think JR thought there was a good chance Cullen was coming back here.

Yep. We can do as good or better than Bones with the right trade, but we're not going to get anyone as good as Cullen for 4C.

He's the best 4C in the league and exceptional value for money. There's no way to replace that.

Here's what I would do on opening night (I do not think this will happen at all). If no 3C is brought in before the season starts (which I think one will be) I'd like to see:

Sheary Crosby Hornqvist (18min/g)
Hagelin Malkin Kessel (18min/g)
Wilson Guentzel Rust (15min/g)
Rowney McClement Reaves (9min/g)
Kuhn

Dumo Letang
Maatta Schultz
Cole Hunwick
Pouliot Ruh

Murray Niemi

PK:

Hags Rowney
Rust McClement

Give the fourth line all of the pk draws. Give Jake and Geno the o zone draws and Sid and McClement the d zone ones. I'd just like to see if Jake could basically be what Duchene would be. An offensive 3C who can play the wing when we shorten the bench... JR will probably just pull a trade sometime before Dec tho which I'm good with too.

Hopefully JR can get a good enough 3C via trade, because we will likely have to really limit 4th line minutes

I thought he was just a warm body for camp?

Cullen was a very good fourth line center. But people are acting like he's irreplaceable. He's tough to replace in late August but had we signed someone respectable during free agency, I don't think the outcry would be so severe.
