IMO, no brainer to let him walk. Two major head injuries in the last 6 weeks, he looks slower then ever, and IMO hes on the sharp decline. Love the grit he can bring but just not worth the risk if he's going to be injured half the time.

Plus we keep our 2nd round pick if we don't re-sign him.

It will honestly depend on how much he wants. I like what he can bring to the table, but if he has an unrealistic asking price I'm ok with letting him walk. I'd like to think that Kreider will have a bigger role next year and with the possible infusion of Lindberg, Fast, Miller plus a full year from Dorsett I don't know how much of a need for Clowe there is.

Would like him back but I don't see where we have the cap space to take on a 3+ million bottom 6 UFA right now. Situation looks grim as it is.

Even if we buy Richards out, we'll have about 20 million. After we retain all of our UFA's that won't leave us with much to improve the team. We can't go in with the same roster.

Ryane Clowe simply hasn't been the same player since sustaining a ferocious bodycheck at the hands of Niklas Kronwall in the 2011 playoffs. Particularly in the regular season prior to that hit, Clowe was one of the most effective players along the boards in the NHL, consistently winning one-on-one puck battles to help the Sharks sustain possession and create scoring chances.

he's been an utter liability at even-strength when not attached at the hip to Logan Couture. Even at his best, he never truly had the puck skills to drive play through the neutral zone or the hockey sense to trigger clean exits out of the defensive end, with superior linemates like Joe Pavelski and Couture routinely expected to mask his deficiencies.

He definitely is, but like you said, the market sucks. The only solution is to start drafting these guys, which we certainly haven't done enough of. The Ranger's record of drafting goal scoring over their history is absolutely abysmal, and that's why we always have to turn to ridiculous contracts.

if we buy out Richards it would give us something like 21M to work with to resign Mcdongah, Hagelin, and Stepan, and bring in someone like Horton.. and still give us some serious cap room, even at 5M. I'm just not sure he's worth 5M.

The operative word above is 'if'. And it may go a little further. If it's true that his injuries were two separate concussions following close upon each other then I don't think it's a good idea to re-sign him at least not to a multi-year deal for a lot of money. The thing is I don't think any (or too many of us) can categorically state that his injuries are in fact two concussions even as much as we may suspect so. The Rangers have been pretty silent about it.

I will say this--this Rangers team like last year's Rangers team were knocked out the playoffs by teams that out battled them along the boards and in the corners and crashed the net harder. It's not just talent that wins playoff series. There's a lot of muscle and grit and sometimes fists (or the threat thereof) that get you there. If Clowe had been healthy he could have made a big difference.

The Bruins do not play a fancy game. Neither did last year's Devils. Neither did last year's Stanley Cup winning Kings. Neither do the Pens--though with Crosby and Malkin they're more capable of anyone else to do that. Pens have Neal and Kunitz (who is sneaky dirty), Cooke (who is very dirty) Iginla, Morrow, Kennedy, Vitale, Dupuis--some of these guys are very good point producers--but there are no soft players.
