I just finished the Dec. 4th Dynamite and the main event was a solid match between Claudio and Brody. Here's an exercise I came up with though, how many singles wrestlers in 2024 have had more "important" years than either of them:
Moxley, MJF, Ospreay, Swerve, Page, Cassidy, Darby, Danielson, Jericho, Christian, Okada, Perry, Black, Garcia, Fletcher, Copeland, Samoa Joe, White, Takeshita, Kingston, Roddy, Briscoe, Hook, Pac, Cole/Lashley (even based on limited time, at least the latter gave them one big PPV match for example).
That's 26 guys! Omega just misses 2024. So the Dynamite main event is between two guys not even in top 25? And how protected is the AEW roster, you can be someone not even in top 20 like Pac or Brody and not really take losses unless they have to like on PPV or tournament. They would even be afraid to make Nick Wayne or Hobbs be in continental classic and go 0-5 or 1-4, and they're not even really sniffing that top 25.
Or, there's another way to look at it. Perry vs Roddy probably isn't a main event of Dynamite right, even though they undoubtably have had bigger years storyline/belt wise. So, maybe the fact that Claudio and Brody felt more like a main event match means something, and they should be giving midcard run to stronger guys instead of Roddy, Garcia, etc. Then again Takeshita who is another strong guy is international title holder and it seems irrelevant because he can't talk, so I understand there is a trade off.
