With Sidney Crosby in the penalty box, I will tell you something fun. When I was a kid (6 or 7 years old) I always thought players in the box had to stay there during intermission if it carried over to a new period 
With the exception of Chytil, the other forwards are vets. This is where Gorts needs to make the changes. Instead of tying up the cap on fringe guys that winning teams don't want, you are better off with kids or role players who can fill a role.
IMO that's going to be just as much of a challenge as drafting and developing.

I was a kid. In the Netherlands. All I knew about hockey was what I saw on TV. They never showed any player leave the box at the end of the period

I always led the league in penalty minutes. People would joke that I should just stay there between periods.
