The Playoff Push, Tanking and Scoreboard Watching Thread

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

I want to preface this by saying that we do not have as good of a roster as the 2019 team and I am not predicting a 2019-style deep playoff run.

But man, the vibe coming out of that room sure does feel similar to February/March of 2019. Monty seems to be pushing all the right buttons and every indication is that the players are all playing for each other. The 5 on 5 numbers in the 48 games since Monty took over look great (2nd in GF%, 4th in GA per 60, 5th in GF per 60, 10th in xGF%, 9th in scoring chance percentage, and 6th in high danger chance percentage). The numbers are even better if you just look at the most recent 10-20 games. We've been in the top third of the league in hits all year, but you can see the physicality ramping up.

This is the most fun I've had watching the Blues since the 2021/22 season and it felt great to check the standings and see the Blue Note sitting in a playoff spot. I absolutely loved how much ESPN was focused on Bolduc in the 1st period last night. This team is just fun right now.
If binnington goes god mode I'm guessing 2012 kings

This team might not be the most skilled team, but it comes to play. Bottom 6 players like Walker, Toro, Joseph are playing with great energy nightly. We are hard to playing against when we have a roster full of guys playing this hard. Schenn, Bolduc, Holloway are the skilled guys playing their asses off too. Just need to get Buch going. He’s sucked all year.

Another four points up for grabs this weekend.

Vancouver, Calgary, Utah, Minnesota in action tonight. Just the Blues tomorrow. Need four points this weekend to keep up with the pace and the games in hand gap widening for the other wildcard teams + Wild.

Alright, I'm going to start tracking the effective equivalent of a magic number. Its not exactly that, since we don't quite yet control our own destiny. I'm going to follow the below teams, but I realize a team like LAK could tank their way into the discussion. The format is: current points, maximum potential points, common games remaining against teams in this grouping. The common games are significant because you can start to see where a team can control its destiny.

Right now Wild and Flames are the ones that have a magic number. I may add a column for RW and ROW if it starts to matter for tiebreakers.

Current pointsGames remainingTotal possible pointsCommon games remaining
Wild8313109vs C (1), vs V (1)
Flames7514103vs U (1), vs W (1)
Canucks7613102vs W (1)
Blues7712101vs U (1)
Utah731399vs C (1), vs B (1)

I think this format is a lot more accurate view of the actual relative rankings with regard to securing a playoff spot. I think its pretty likely that 2 of these teams are in the playoffs (probably as the wildcards) although maybe the Kings could slide into the wildcard or something. I plan to update my table every night. Everyone is in action today!

And I don't want to hear any shit about my format.

Nah the rangers are horrible. 2 shots on goal and your 6 minutes into the 2nd period
What an absolute albatross. NYR currently outshot by Vancouver 19-3 right now with 13 minutes left in the second period. That team has lost its previous three games and has checked out of a wild card spot.

Is the east just pathetic? The Rangers are in the same position as the Blues and Nucks but they can't even muster a lackluster effort.

Edit: Aaaand they score again. Somehow. They have no business being in this game but hey. I'll take it.

I thought the Blues were better served selling before the deadline thinking there wasn't enough of a chance to sneak into wc2, but I guess see you guys in the playoffs, I'm hoping for a Flames loss later tonight :D

If the Blues don’t win this game, the OT win (instead of regulation win) against Vancouver can’t be used as an excuse. They need to get their heads out of their a**es and win to take advantage of the gift the Rangers gave them today
