OT: The Pittsburgher Thread: Ploff wins?!? Fire Tomlin

Does Tomlin watch these championship games and think his offense looks like this except with a better QB? lol…it’s a way different game scheme wise than anything he puts out there…the game has passed him by…

I think the 3 obvious positions they need to be considering with their 1st and 2nd rounders are WR, DL and CB, but FA moves could change that up. I'm regularly flip-flopping on whether I want to trade Pickens or not, I think you could get a 2nd for him and draft all 3 of those positions with your 1st and 2 2nds. That said, you could have a really lethal 1-2 punch if you can manage to sign Godwin or Adams as a FA and keep Pickens.

This was posted a couple of weeks ago, but they need to do 2 of 3 with their WR group:

1. Draft a WR in round 1
2. Sign someone like Adams or Godwin in free agency.
3. Keep Pickens

If the DL is a concern enough to warrant using a 1st on it, that makes me inclined to go with 2 and 3 here.

This draft has a bad rap for WR however there are some interesting options spread from where the Steelers are picking in the first round through 3rd rd. Additionally there should be an option for X or Z at any of these spots with decent potential. So they shouldn't feel like they have to keep Pickens if they want to move on, and should take a WR even if they kept him.

I also really like the DT and CB available and think it's a need with Heyward reaching the end. Getting an extra pick for Pickens to address these would be ideal. None of the QBs interest me, though I bet they take one. All the more reason to amass more picks in the first 4 rds.

They're not even playing the same sport with the top teams.

The last two crucial plays of the game, the Chiefs send a corner blitz that forces the pressure on Allen and leads to the incomplete and turnover on downs. When was the last time the Steelers dialed anything up other than relying on Watt to "beat the man in front of you", which he's literally never done yet in his playoff career I'm pretty sure? Zero sacks in the playoffs? If he has any it's not many. Tomlin's defense is the most vanilla chicken you know what defense this team has ever played.

And the second crucial play to secure the victory on offense, a trips to the left set, all run slants to the right over the middle dragging all the coverage except for the rb spy to the right, the rb runs a simple screen to the left where only the spy is left on that side of the field to cover him, and picks up the first easily. It wasn't even that creative of a call but even that is so far above the braintrust (or rot) that exists on this coaching staff.

Like I've said before, I can handle losing, would actually vastly prefer it right now to wasting wins on mediocre records. I can handle losing due to lack of talent. But having a coaching staff that is so clearly lacking in the x's and o's department, and even worse, has the best job security in the league, is so exhausting that I barely care about the sport anymore. It's not worth investing any emotions into until Tomlin is gone, because their ceiling is stuck in the 2000's and won't ever change until he's gone.

This run the Chiefs are on is unbelievable. They were sleep walking through the season and still end up in the Super Bowl.

And despite the notion all season of defense mattering again in the nfl, the defending champs Chiefs struggling all year on offense but pulling off late game miracles that couldn't possibly last, etc. etc., the average score of this championship weekend was still over 30.

Offense wins in the modern league, if you can't score 30 when it matters, you might as well not even show up for the game.

The Eagles and Ravens sign undervalued running backs that make immediate impacts on their season.

The Steelers big free agent move this off season was to bring in Patrick Queen. An effing middle linebacker, on the already most expensive D in the league, who Ravens fans/media immediately clowned on and proclaimed would prove to mostly be a product of Roquan Smith, which predictably proved true.

The Steelers pay Watt to sack nobody in his playoffs career (not entirely his fault, his coaching scheme sucks, but earn your pay some day will ya?).

And Minkah...deserves a meeting with the Bob's more than his paycheck.

To be fair they did need a LB but it is hilarious how aggressive they are only when it comes to defensive players (with middling results). Steelers biggest FA move ever is ILB. They traded up to 10th OA a few years ago to draft... a LB. They trade their 1st rounder a few years ago for... a safety. They haven't drafted a 1st Rd WR in 20 years. They're living in 1974.

It was a great stretch and they did a good job ben was was surrounded by a sb ready team. Ben was able to surprise teams but as he got older he wasn’t a film guy he wasn’t a read the defense Qb even BA said that

The league has changed sure but Ben only has 1 play off win with 300 yards passing. The more they ran the ball and limited his mistakes the better the team played no different than now
SB ready team? so if tommy maddox doesn't get hurt they still go 15-1 and are the #1 seed in 2004?
and he wins a SB in 2005 too ?

Roth had one of the best playoff records in NFL history to start a career under Cowher’s guys, Whiz and Arians - 10-4.

Roth still holds the NFL record for most playoff wins by the age of 25.

Once Tomlin started hiring his own guys, things went to hell - and Roth only won three more playoff games in his career.

It’s not a coincidence when Tomlin took control of the offense, Roth’s playoff career had a startling 180.

Just like it’s not a coincidence Tomlin has no coaching tree.

Just like it’s not a coincidence Tomlin continues to bomb in the playoffs post Roth.

there's no way this dude was of adult age at the time the steelers won SB XL

SB ready team ? yeah that 6-10 team the year before they drafted ben just screamed contender.

bunch of half truths to the stories he's brings up

one of the newer excuses i see the nuthuggers try to use is, the rooneys are too cheap to bring in qulaity assistant coaches like KC and philly have. I saw that after the games today on social media.

so i looked up A smith contract. tied for 6th highest OC salary in the league at $2 M per season.
iirc canada was maling 1.5 M

Ok but the o line coach and dc and other coaches make 1 million or less

Everything is simply a coincidence.

- Roth being on a historical playoff run under Cowher’s OCs, who all got head coaching jobs.

Coincidence.

- Things going to hell when Tomlin runs the O and does the hiring.

Coincidence.

- None of Tomlin’s OCs being wanted by a single NFL team to even do donut and coffee runs.

Coincidence.

- Every QB under Tomlin floundering.

Coincidence.

- Playoff embarrassments continuing long after Roth retires.

Coincidence.

Nothing to see here, just 15 years of coincidences and super duper bad luck is all.

Imagine if the Eagles decided “hey we won a SB with Pederson, we better give him a lifetime job!”

I mean, who else you gonna get?
I'll steelman this with every excuse Tomlin ball washers use

Tomlin doesn't have the talent they do!
You'll be the first one crying when they have a losing season!
Tomlin will be picked up by 20 other teams immediately!
The Rooney's are playing cheap with coordinators!
wHo eLse aRe yOu gOinG to gEt??????? (drools on self)

Easy counters for them:

- Rooneys are so cheap Tomlin is the highest paid coach in the league.

- Steelers and most org never disclose how much their coordinators make, so more BS.

- As the great Deebo said, Tomlin is the one picking the roster, he’s been here 18 years, if roster construction is an issue, that’s on him.

- Who the Eagles gonna get after they fired their SB winning coach?

I mean except a guy who has built a powerhouse roster and gone to two SBs.

Who cares if Tomlin is the highest paid HC no salary cap for spending on coaches and they have the least amount of coaches on their staff. You can’t even fire an assistant coach whose under contract without Art ok.
The Eagles Rosemen fired dc and oc last season made the dc the the highest paid in the league and they have the best o line coach in football.
Here in Pittsburgh Khan is a bean counter figure head and every pick or signing is 100 percent on Tomlin.
