I think they could do all of that stuff (all WR/DB, trade Pickens, let go of Wilson) but they won't trade Watt. Even though it's the right thing to do, it acknowledges taking a step back to take a step forward which we simply won't get in Tomlin purgatory.

Did things get ugly enough that we no longer want Russell Wilson as QB next year? Because I think I'm there if they don't beat Baltimore. I think it'd be a real though bring back PR wise, and I don't think the talent at this point is sufficient for me to want the team to go through with it. I don't think it's all his fault, or anywhere near, but getting punked by the Bengals is enough for me to flip the switch.

Laughed out of these message boards, maybe. In the offices of AR III and the national media Tomlin adoration society they'll ask critically about it for 1 day before praising Tomlin again.
Wilson and Teryl Austin will walk the plank for the failure. Wilson probably deserved. They'll also throw a shit ton of capital at WR even if they trade Pickens because Khan will be lambasted for his lack of playmakers. But it'll just lead to the same 9-8 next year with Justin Fields.

Oh yeah, that's all I was getting at. Maybe in more pro-Tomlin spaces too.

In the Steelers front office... I dunno tbh. They've been super loyal and in love with him, but Rooney sounded pretty impatient for his playoff win last year. I'm sure they'll bring out the platitudes, but I won't be surprised if they're mixed with a sharper "we need results now".

Their splits with Watt are insane. That’s the only way to successfully tank, but if you do that you are rebuilding the locker room/team culture from scratch. I’m not sure Tomlin is up to the task for that. They’d rather be average until the next superstar comes along.

I know you aren't a believer in QB mobility but even with Burrow you can see the escapability leading to big plays and 3rd down conversions. Wilson's body is betraying him. He also is all "3 pointers and layups" e.g., no intermediate. Finally, he is short and across the NFL there is a new emphasis on batted passes.

I need a QB to be "college frat star" athletic at least or be Tom Brady from a vision standpoint. Wilson is trending towards a slightly more mobile version of late career Ben.

It's not rocket science.

If you run 95 percent of the time on first and second down (I include passes behind the line of scrimmage as runs) and only pass on third and long or if way behind, then teams will stack the box and your offense will suck.

It is amazing to me that one of Tomlin's favorite sayings is not to live on your fears.

This play calling is the ultimate living in your fears.

That’s why I’m not totally out on Russ. Smith is practically telegraphing their game script and play calling.

This teams best shot to turn things around and get over the hump is to go balls to the wall next time a good QB becomes available.

I don't think tanking is a great strategy in the NFL either.

But I think they're going there in a few years without something special happening anyway. Which raises questions about the preference of a controlled explosion vs continuing to chuck shit in there and crossing fingers, although I'm sure we're all 95% certain on what the Steelers will do.

He was bad and I don't want him back. But there were like 4-5 blatant drops. That's not on him.

Wilson could not get a yard on a QB sneak where the defense had 4 down linemen. He is cooked athletically. He is also undersized, so his vision is compromised and his passes are constantly getting batted down.
