OT: The Pittsburgher Thread: Off Season We dont need a QB Edition

Steelers could have easily got their QB last year with either Nix or Penix. But Tomlin is in control and the guy is a maroon. Add a horrible lackey at GM and you get what we got.

FIRE EVERYONE

Plenty of shit to get pissed at Tomlin for, but this isn't 1 of them.
General consensus was that teams were over drafting QBs. Guess the "consensus" got this one wrong.

Well clearly the Steelers heard you as they took Jalen Milroe to dinner :sarcasm:

The more I think about it, I feel like Milroe is going to be the pick.

So the Steelers will burn their 1st rounder on a guy who can't throw the football and not have a 2nd rounder. Meanwhile, the DL will get ignored.

We're going to find out who has the balls in the org to stand up to Tomlin. We're also going to find out if anyone in the org has a clue about QB evaluation and drafting.

I really see this as Tomlin's going to be all about adding a QB to this glorious team I have that can win a SB if it only gets this one piece, and Wiedl being more like my thinking of: no point in adding a bad QB when you still have a long ways to go in building the team, especially the trenches.

This team needs to just move on from Rodgers and bring Russ back. Zero excuse to keep playing this waiting game with Rodgers, he's not nearly good enough to warrant this.

Just like everything with him, Rodgers needs to make everything a show and cause drama.
I agree with xlm, it might be annoying but at this point, he isn’t really holding us back from doing anything. We’ve already made our bed and seem content with Rudolph/Rookie or Rodgers as a bridge.

I haven’t seen anyone credible suggest that Milroe is a projected first round pick since like halfway through the college season. It would seem to me that he’d be a target with our 3rd round pick.

Yeah this premise that they Rodgers has them over a barrel is weird. It is very clear this team (rightfully) does not want Russ back.

No Rodgers not a big upgrade but he’s different than Russ. Who proved he’s not gonna do much here.

Well this team just recently reached for a QB in Rd 1, so I'm not putting anything past these morons (well specifically Tomlin).

Meeting with players is a sign they like them, but not necessarily for their first. They had pre-draft meetings with all of Fautanu, Frazier, Payton Wilson, McCormick, Logan Lee, and like 30 other guys they didn't draft (including Beanie Bishop).

I'm not worried they will use their first on Milroe. I still think a 3rd or 4th would be a mistake, but not as catastrophic as their 1st.

Kenny was definitely ranked higher on draft boards than where his actual skill was because of how light that class was at QB. Kenny Pickett in the 2nd round is a good pick...so we over drafted him by 20-30 slots?

They should just let this draft come to them. The positions of need, the classes are deep.

How many of those guys did they take to dinner with the position coach though?

Brugler had a year agnostic 1-2 grade on him. Zierlein graded him higher than Cam Ward. And Jeremiah's big board - which is position agnostic - also had him as a firm 1st round talent for that draft class.

This idea that everybody bar the Steelers knew Pickett should never have been a 1st rounder in 2022 is just one big old rewrite of reality.

My initial gut feelings have us taking Derrick Harmon and the HB Sampson out of Tennesse. He'd be a massive help in the run and Sampson has some juice that we need on offense.

I will be curious to see if they can swing a deal with Oakland for Pickens and what that looks like. I have been saying the most efficient use of Pickens is to trade up into the 1st round with him.

Not sure I agree with this. KP wasn't even the consensus #1 QB in his class. Lots of mocks had Willis, Howell and even Ridder as the 1st QB off the board.

It was a muddled QB class without a clear #1 prospect and it was essentially "these QB's are all about the same. Pick the one that best suits your style/offense"

And most of those 1st rd mocks were him going to Steelers because he already knew his way around the locker room or something. Kind of a self fulfilling prophecy.

He wasn't a 1st rd quality pick. We reached because the team wanted a do over on the Marino story.

By draft night Pickett was the only concenus 1st round Qb. I

Other teams considered him a 1st round pick the saints were thinking about him

None of that actually refutes what I'm saying thought.

The existence of other liked QBs doesn't mean there's not a 1st round grade, which is my point. I never said he was consensus QB1, just that he was a consensus first rounder among the people whose opinions and reputations actually reflect knowledge and work.

A mock draft is not how you find out whether someone has a 1st round grade on someone either, because mocks are a mix of speculation (usually by the uninformed) and entertainment. Big boards and draft grades are where you find that.

I have no idea. Is that unusual?

Me neither tbh. I guess I could find out through a bunch of searching on Stalkers Depot. It does feel like their highest level of interest though.

Agreed. I thought Kenny was a 2nd round talent that was overrated. It happens every single year with QBs.

I see what you're saying now.

I don’t get why fans are getting so pissy about the Rodgers thing. Him waiting to make his decision isn’t holding this team back from anything.

It isn't holding the the team back, no.

But as a reminder of the team's impotence, having to wait for a washed-up egomaniac to decide whether he prefers the Steelers to the Giants is a pretty stinging one. People get pissy about waiting at the best of times, but this wait is emphatically not that.

Pickett wasn't a reach in the moment in the sense that most evaluators had a late 1st round grade on him but when every other QB in that class went like 50+ picks later than they were projected to... that kind of screams reach. Gift of hindsight I suppose.

I don't really want to have autopsy #12 on Kenny Pickett though so I'm going to bow out from further discussion lol.
