He struggled with Fields at QB and did marginally better with Wilson.

Moore on Fields this past season:

“I don’t know, y’all ask me that what, last week?” Moore said of the Bears’ quarterback buzz. “I’m still like, bruh, where are y’all seeing this? What makes [Fields] not the quarterback for the Chicago Bears right now? ... What, there’s like two of them? [Caleb Williams and Drake Maye] I don’t think they better than Justin.”

The words of a WR that had his best season with Fields under center.

I’m not a big Fields fan, but to suggest he’s the one holding back GP is silly AF.

It’s a combination of GP’s poor route running and a shitty offense that plays scared so Tomlin can eke out wins.

All it says is that Vegas plays in a dome. Stafford has played his entire career in a dome. Dude in no way wants to have to play outside in the majority of his games. IF he went to Vegas he would play atleast 10 games in a dome.
 
I'm not saying this from a "they'll win games" POV, but I don't see the issue with running it back with Wilson for next year. Re-signing Wilson pretty much guarantees this team will be drafting a QB next year, where going with Fields would delay that decision for a couple of years beyond that. There likely isn't much of a difference between going with any of Wilson, Fields, Darnold or anyone else they could realistically acquire, while Wilson being the oldest also means the Steelers would be forced to get a draft a new QB soonest.

Their season next year probably won't be much different than this year with Wilson at QB, it's another 10-7 or so season with a wildcard loss or barely missing the playoffs, but it pretty much ensures they'll be using a high pick on a QB on 2026. I don't really see that as a bad outcome.

I don’t think they view either guy as anything more than a stop gap. Both are mitch Tribsky holding the spot for a rookie in 26

It’s not a coincidence Tomlin has drafted and developed exactly one impact player in the last ten years, and hasn’t won a playoff game in eight of them.

Very bizarre the media won’t touch the obvious here.

It’s all there to put together for anyone with a pulse.
 
I really don't understand how so many people just assume the Steelers will be drafting their future QB in 2026. NFL organizations in general don't work that way, and the Steelers in particular are a year-to-year and even week-to-week organization that doesn't look past the immediate future, so the idea that they'll just stopgap the position and plan to draft Arch Manning or Drew Allar or whomever is the most un-Steelers assumption you can make. And really, you know they won't be bad enough to pick high enough to get a top prospect so this "plan" would end up with them overdrafting Klubnik or Beck and having another Kenny Pickett situation.

There's no obvious solution to the position this offseason, but this rampant assumption that they'll just fix it in the 2026 draft is just not how this franchise operates and is not particularly likely to occur, at least not in a good way.

Tbf, Rooney has said they'll be probably be drafting a QB this year or next. It's a wishy-washy statement, but it is proof that the Steelers are looking ahead to future years in their planning.

I'd also say that regardless of how the Steelers or any NFL team draws up their plans, something along these lines is probable. They only have stopgap QBs available. They seem to recognise that from the fact they haven't given Wilson or Fields a massive deal. Teams with stopgap QBs end up drafting in the next few years more times than not. It's true they won't be picking top 5 most like, but it's possible they'll trade up to pick top 10, and if not, they'll still pick and hope it's a Jackson or Hurts situation.

I'm not expecting it to end well, but it seems pretty likely they're going to try.

My slight worry with bringing Wilson back is that they force a QB pick (Ewers/Dart/Milroe) this year on day 2. I don’t necessarily think it’s super likely but I’d guess they aren’t going to want to go into next with not a single possible longer term option in the QB room.

I also don’t get the sense that he’s going to be super cheap. And if Fields ends up leaving, I’d rather they just go with the cheapest possible option.

On the first point, I wouldn't really mind doing that as long as it's a 3rd rounder. The scenario I don't like is them running with Wilson and trading up in the 2nd to draft Milroe, because I figure that Milroe goes too early for them to take with their own 2nd. But if it's using a 3rd to draft someone like Ewers, I don't really have a major problem with that.

On the second point, the more I hear about Wilson's market the more I think he's going to be really cheap to sign. It seems like Fields has legitimate alternatives if he hits UFA that may raise his price, but it seems like Wilson pretty much doesn't have that. I'm not saying he'll be taking vet minimum again but I'd be surprised for him to get more than like $10-$15 million on a 1 year deal. It just doesn't seem like there's much of a market for him if he leaves Pittsburgh.

I saw a tweet yesterday from Nick Farabaugh about there being some mutual interest between Wilson and the Giants. And there was another report that the Raiders would look into him (and Fields). I definitely think he could strike out and the price could significantly drop. But I don’t see him signing prior to free agency for a cheapish one year deal. And by most accounts the Steelers aren’t really willing to wait for things to play out in free agency.

They probably should just wait it out, but if they don’t they’re probably going to pay a premium for either guy.
 
I think the Steelers want to draft DL Cb RB than Qb. I think they want to have either RW or JF for 2 years. I don’t think either one has a big market. Teams like the jets and Vegas will draft a qb this season to eventually start

Wilson to Vegas made a lot of sense to me earlier in the off-season, but I've seen some water thrown on the idea. I was thinking they would sign Wilson and draft Milroe with their 2nd, but it seems like that idea was squashed. It definitely could still happen, but I think it's less likely now. Not only that, but if the Giants pass up on Sanders, I think the Raiders end up taking Sanders instead. I think only one of those 2 teams will have a QB1 opening.

My gut feeling right now is that the Steelers QB next year will be either Wilson or Darnold. I think the scenario that makes the most sense to me is:

Steelers: Darnold on a multi-year deal
Raiders: Wilson on a short term deal, draft Milroe in round 2 to sit behind him
Giants: Sanders in the draft
Jets: Fields on a multi-year deal
Browns: Gamble on a younger guy like Zach Wilson

I'm not a huge fan of Darnold personally, but I think the Steelers signing him to a Geno Smith type of contract (3 years at $25 million a year or so) makes a lot of sense for what they'll do.

Haven't read that - what have I missed?

I would add that while in practical terms I've no real problem with Wilson, money pending, and see advantages to him as a potential mentor, emotionally I'd rather not. That's a mix of not wanting to read his quotes, exasperation with his all or nothing play, exasperation with the team, and most of all not wanting to read Steelers Nation's response to him coming back and then playing the next season. He has the potential to get Canada levels of hate.

I think Darnold ends up in Indy
I think Rodgers starts the season for the giants and Ward or Sanders
Jets seem to be a team who likes Dart
Not sure the raiders with chip Kelly as an oc want RW.

I don’t think Indy signs Darnold because they still have Richardson and signing Darnold is basically waiving the white flag with Richardson.

I’m not a big fan of Darnold, but I do think he makes a lot of sense for the Steelers. He’s still fairly young, can be the game manager type that Tomlin loves and has the arm talent to utilize Pickens. I don’t think any team is winning a Super Bowl with Darnold as their QB1, but he fits the maintained mediocrity idea this team seems to want to be.

They already said they are bringing in competition for Richardson. The colts play indoors and have a good offensive core that can support Darnold. They can win the afc south with him at Qb. We don’t have the offensive weapons to invest 3/100 on Darnold

Then there’s Khan and Rooney both saying they want to sign one of them prior to free agency. I would imagine there’s an amount they won’t go over for both but everything kind of points to them not wanting to let things play out. Although if both guys say they’re hitting free agency there’s not much to do about it.

I agree from a practical/emotional point on him, though I do kind of wonder about his mentorship and whether his ego can handle being a backup. This year he seemed fine but the expectation he would take back over once healthy was always there. My interest in the season itself would I think be at an all time low though if he’s back.
