$40 million is a lot but the cap is going to rise to a projected ~$310 million next year, which is a jump of $30 million. You're basically paying for Darnold's contract just with the cap increase from 2025 to 2026.

It's even less if you structure it so he's getting paid 25, 30m a year up until a final year with very few guarantees and most of the money, which is how I'd imagine it happening.

I think it's decently likely that Dulac jumped the gun on Rodgers and the Steelers and Fields came back to the table once free agency started to see if they can work something out.

Rodgers is definitely the fallback option if Fields doesn't work out, especially since Wilson signed with the Giants (which is super unsurprising IMO), but Dulac probably just jumped the gun on it.
