OT: The OT Thread: Work sucks. Dogs don't. (Warning in post 368)

The bolded seems to track for me as well. The best night of sleep I got was a week or so ago. My watch said I got a crazy amount of REM sleep, which I never come close to hitting while stoned.

Man, I love the feeling of being stoned, and actually still perform well the next day, but I don't doubt the sober life leads to better performance day in and day out. I think it'd be wise to cut it down to a few times a week, but even then- since THC stays in the system so long- I wonder if it would still impact my sleep every day.

My wife and I are trying to have a baby. As I said above, she was a scientist and is now a nurse, so she's very smart when it comes to studies and general health. She sent me research on the impact THC has on sperm and it's...not great.

Dammit! why are all the fun things bad for us!
I highly recommend a weekly break from THC at least a couple of times a year if you're a casual user, or a sober October strategy where you take a full month off. It puts you in control and I think it radically minimizes the kind of withdrawal symptoms I had to slog though when I reached that point in my life where I no longer found THC to be compatible with my lifestyle.

And trust me, there is nothing more fun than children and family and experiencing life with clarity and purpose. I don't think mild THC use is incompatible with those things, but it can definitely become a crutch that we lean on too often to experience joy when just being in the moment will more than suffice.

If it helps, I don't think it's much worse for your sperms than most other fun substances. Sorry, guess that doesn't help at all...

On the sleep subject: lots of extant studies are small samples, anecdotal, or not super controlled. You can thank the idiotic Schedule 1 status for that. We're decades behind where we could be. Anecdotally, when i take breaks, the first week can be rough. After that goes away, smooth sailing, but I know that's not universal

I don't go to social media much because, while I gave 22 years defending freedom of speech, there are way too many dumb asses who comment on things they really don't know much about, but act like they do.
Reading social media during and after the event confirmed my decision to not use social media for much beyond getting sports news, national news from reputable sources, and staying in touch with friends. It's all a Constitutionally supported cesspool which I'd rather not enter.

I'm only on youtube and bluesky for now, and trying to ditch those. I'm getting a flip phone and eschewing all apps. I started this year subscribing to several news services.

This garbage is hypnotizing, re-wiring brains. We're going to look back and see social media as a horrible mistake, co-opted and corrupted by parasitic bad actors.

I was working in "social media" before Twitter came along. (i.e, blogs, forums, etc.)

I was required for work to create a Twitter account since it was the "next new thing!!". I knew within the first hour that Twitter was going to be a shitshow because the VERY FIRST tweet I ever saw from those I followed (had to follow all teammates, co-workers, etc.) was someone saying "I'm going to have a tuna sandwich for lunch." Followed up by everyone else replying with their own lunch plans.

Twitter has gone downhill ever since the day it went public.

Sounds like Facebook...

What does everyone think about the Nichols school?
45-50 years ago we'd go there for their annual rummage sale to buy used sports gear for pennies on the dollar. Skates, masks, non-goalie padding. Got a whole paper grocery sack filled to the top with shoe, sneaker, skate, and boot laces - brand new - for $1. Used those for decades. Used to ride by it on my bike on the way to my Grandma's who lived a few blocks away on Elam, in one of the "working class" homes in Parkside.

I still drive / walk Parkside & Delaware Park if I'm in BUF in the summer for vacation. Beautiful architecture.

School itself? I've known a couple people who went there but it's been decades and I can't comment on the quality of the education relative to other private options in BUF / WNY. I have several friends who attended or whose kids attended the Park School, Elmwood Franklin, Cardinal Ohara (closed), Bishop Timon (closed/merged?), Canisius, St. Joes, Mount St. Mary, Mount St. Josephs, St. Francis, and Niagara Catholic or whatever it's called. Christian Laetner of Duke basketball fame went there. My HS played them/him his Sr. year. (Pretty sure he was from Angola because he knew friends of mine from college, although he was a few years younger than us.)

No knowledge / comments on the past several decades.
Are they in the news for a scandal (or closing?)

My son may be playing for them in the future.

Like @brian_griffin I know some who’ve sent their kids there and were/are happy with it. My wife’s cousin being one. His son played hockey there.

My personal experiences are from growing up and coaching. Growing up I went to Canisius HS and knew some kids who went there. I’ve always known it to have a good reputation academically. Their hockey program has had a good reputation as well.

Been to those rinks a ton of times with my daughters. It was one of their game/practice rinks the year they played for the Bisons. When they played at Hamburg we practiced quite a lot on the small rink.

Started feeling like maybe the lawyer doesn't have my best interests in mind. His Yelp reviews are not great, and he immediately pushed for me to go to his most expensive representation package. Unfortunately I haven't found any other alternatives, so for the sake of my mental health, I think I'm just going to resign and never go back. It's a tough job market, but I don't really feel like I have much choice, and adding the stress of a lawsuit hanging over my head is not going to help.
