OT: The OT Thread: Work sucks. Short work weeks don't. (Warning in post 368)

Got good news when I was driving Myles to school this morning. He got an email that MCC finally got his transcript, he's accepted, and they have his FAFSA.

I had been trying to stay out of it and letting him handle it. But, I was stressing about it. Even his mom asked him if he was trying to take a quiet gap year. He was not and he is relieved to get that email, too.

Stepped over one of the dogs who had pulled up to take a nap close to me this morning, smashing my foot into a furniture post. I think I've cleaned up all the blood, didn't realize I was bleeding from one of my toes initially. It hurt, but I didn't think I'd broken the skin.

All three of them are sleeping quietly while I dress the wound.

Geez. I swear my cats try to kill me anytime I walk down the stairs. I'm not entirely convinced they're not insanely cute assassins trying to take me out, but then I remember I'm not nearly important enough for someone to assassinate.

My roommate’s cat did that to me this morning. While I was carrying a hot cup of coffee. Then had the nerve to glare at me like I was the problem.

Like dude you literally did this to yourself.

People hate the idea but we drove these people into the "dark web" .. banished them from social media ect ect.... they are free there to preach their hate/extremism with no pushback..just an empty echo chamber.

Speech is the best counter measure to any extremist ideas or hate.

Let people show you who they really are.

Being covert only makes it harder for Law Enforcement to keep an eye on and track.
None of that is true.

The Tops shooter was not banished from social media. He was on YouTube, Discord, twitch, Reddit, 4chan and 8kun. I mean he lived streamed the act itself. None of that is the dark web or covert, though a couple are on the fringes. All of it can be and is monitored by law enforcement, especially the last 2.

The problem with social media has always been algorithms. They create the echo chambers people get trapped in. They also prevent info people would need to break out of them from getting in. Thats why the “beat hate with better speech” doesn’t work very well on social media.

I would love to say have a solution to this problem but I don’t.

The only solution I can think of is to ban it, but that goes against the rules of this country. And yes, algorithms are the devil. I also think news entertainment has done so much damage to the older generation of this country, and they still walk away from lawsuits paying a large sum of money only to continue spewing lies. I walk around my ICU, and people will be watching it 24/7. Meanwhile, I rarely see people glued to the actual news like that.

I do think we're headed for some rough times. So much misinformation out there, and as someone who worked the ICU during the pandemic- it really impacted my mental health hearing what some people thought while I watched many in our community wither away.

Like you said, I don't know what the solution is, but I dont like where it's heading one bit.

Well The Tops shooter isn't the end all be all...and of course "speech" isn't going to prevent all or even the majority of hate spread online. I think it is the best option out there however.

Even when the feds know about them they rarely stop them unless they have someone actively involved in the planning.

If I want to listen to Alex Jones go off about gay frogs or bitch about Israel, it’s my goddamn American right and I despise any efforts to shut down either.

Funny thing is the whole gay frogs is rooted in some truths since there's published scientific papers on the effects of atrazine on frogs, he just takes it to a whole nother level and it became meme.

As a reminder - "Political discussion is not permitted on the forums except within the narrowly defined scope of hockey-related matters."

It's a private space. The folks who own it made the rules and you all agreed to them when you signed up.

The attempt to silence AJ by the left, and current attempts to shut down criticism of Israel by the right, are simply two sides of the same fascistic coin. You measure free speech by tolerance of opinions perceived to be repugnant.

Of course, tolerance of ideologies that seek to remove basic freedoms and tolerance itself are themselves not to be tolerated. What we call Popper’s paradox of tolerance in an open society.

I’ll die on this hill.

Apologies. Feel free to purge comments.

I think I've made myself clear. Again.

I will try to figure out how to reopen this thread after some initial moderation. In the meantime, I can assure you that it isn't just your content that got moderated - same as yesterday, yours wasn't the only content removed nor was it specific to one particular point of view. Feel free to take it to PM to me or any of the other moderators or admins. I'm sure we will all love to hear how you are the only person being persecuted when dozens of posts were removed even after a public direction to not continue.

As a refresher -

Also in there is this -

That includes continuing to post things where you think you are somehow right and dancing along the line of what is or is not allowed. Having done this task for years, that's frequently been the sign of someone who is trying to troll or who knows what they have done is against the rules or direction but just want to keep on arguing about it publically. And by frequent, I mean almost always. Again, it isn't special and it isn't just about you. And for someone reading this right now and thinking "he's talking about me, that bastard!", yep, I am. It's just you and not the dozen or so posters and dozens of posts that got deleted or edited in the last couple of days... it's just you and especially your point of view. And if one of the others thinks it is about them or their point of view, you have to share or fight each other to the death. As a Scotsman portraying a Spaniard originally from Egypt once said - There can be only one.

And when someone posts something about "freedom of speech" know that I know you don't understand how that actually works. This is a private space with rules established for participation. You agreed to those rules when you signed up to participate in the space. Evolve, the mods and the admins are not a government and aren't retaliating against you about breaking the rules you agreed to when you signed up, we're just managing things within the constraints of the rules as agreed upon. And being free to put keys to page does not also say one is free from the consequences of such - if you troll, flame or heaven forbid decide to get public with a moderating action, there will be consequences that can result in loss of various privileges right up to getting your patooty banned.

If people missed it last time a few of you decided to do this line dance, here is post 328 from this thread.

I have to wonder, if smart phones and social media was banned overnight, would people experience withdrawal? How would society react? There's such a dopamine rush from scrolling on the phone, and people lean in it when theyre bored, depressed, lonely, etc.. The younger generation would really struggle. We'd have to learn how to twiddle our thumbs when we're bored again, haha. The fallout would likely be pretty extreme.

Human brains are still trying to adapt to changes in technology.

I agree it’s the best option. I’m just lamenting the fact that it can’t put much of a dent in the echo chambers created by algorithms.

My son was caught using his cell phone to cheat on his math test last week. We told him he couldn't take his cell phone to school anymore.

This was followed by an angry tantrum.
"This is my entire life right here. You don't understand". After that it was 20-30 minutes of sobbing.

You in NY? .. I thought cell phones were banned in NY schools? ...

I heard they had to put them in some special bag that blocks their service.

Edit: Nope but it is coming.

NJ.

In middle school they were supposed to put it in the pouch in the front of the class. I don't think most, but not all teachers enforced that.

I think some teachers do that in high school now. But I don't think it's a school-wide policy.
