I will say that the Orville tries and largely succeeds in mixing interesting sci-fi plots with Seth’s sarcastic humour.

What surprised me was how hopeful and optimistic the show still manages to be.

Discovery (not to try and throw this thread off topic too much) has the same problem as most of the DC movies in that it tries too hard to be dark and brooding.

Which is kind of odd and seems out of place for a Star Trek series. Even the darkest episodes of past series, I'd say mostly on DS9, are nothing compared to Discovery. I am hopeful that Picard brings us back to what we are more use to.

First episode of season 2 has aired now so what did everyone think of it?

Decent episode, the whole ritual for Bortus made me laugh and was a great play on Pon Far etc. from Star Trek.

It was a weird choice going with such a low stakes character episode in a premier and also for a ship that is supposed to be kinda like Voyager Intrepid-size (maybe a little bigger but definitely not as big as a Constitution Class) that the Doctor would have not at least been familiar with that kid's parents prior for crew physicals etc.

I didn't like the initial interaction of Malloy and the new navigator who is going to be Mercer's love interest this season or so it seems. Too long/busy/right out of Family Guy.

Best acting in the episode goes to Johnson. She carried it even though the story was a little doofy.

Real bummer if Allara is in fact leaving most of the season. She's a pretty important member to the show and her powers which are basically the same as a Kryptonian has been really under utilized.

I don't think we'll bee seeing Patrick Stewart anywhere near this property. He's now officially a Paramount asset again and the last thing they'd want is for him to go to a competitor.

I need to finish up last season. The episode where they went to an alien earth but with a like/dislike social system just cringed the hell out of me and I kind of fell off in interest as a result.

DVR has a backlog that I'll eventually get to.

Ask people in China how that is working for them...

I get that, but the whole premise was a character acting so beyond the pale stupid (even for a comedy's standards) that it was actually just too cringey to keep watching. I'll get back to the show sans that episode eventually.

Apparently Fox has issued a new commercial policy and has reduced the ad time per hour which adds about 3-5 additional minutes to each of their shows. Orville airs on CityTV in Canada. Can anyone confirm if the season premiere of Orville was uncut on City? To be safe I may start PVRing the show off of Fox instead.

If its true that the episodes are running longer in the U.S (Fox), Im not sure of the the Canadian channels will reduce their ad time per hour to accommodate,

I enjoyed it, but it wasn't what I was expecting. I got the impression that they cut what would've been the real Season 1 finale in order to start off Season 2 with a bang and a two-parter of sorts, rather than have a cliffhanger at the end of Season 1 and the conclusion at the start of Season 2 (as TNG often did). Episode 1, on the other hand, wasn't like a season finale or a season premiere. It felt like a mid-season filler episode. I don't mind those, but I expected something more dramatic and high stakes. Maybe they chose to postpone that until the second week, though.

It was OK. Kelly's episode I guess and she nailed it. The new dark matter specialist is hot, but the zipper outfit stunt was ridiculous, even for Seth Mc. Looking forward to more action packed episodes.

Probably wanted to deliver the feels over the holidays. I really like the show even though it isn't particularly great. Kind of a guilty pleasure for me.

2nd episode of the season didn't like that much. IMDB has it at the lowest rated episode so far and it doesn't surprise me.

1st episode of the season was great, a real good character episode. I loved the zipper jacket routine, not sure why it's getting so much hate. Issac and the doctor carried that episode

2nd was, well, different lol. I like it, it was a homage to Hollow Prusuits and Booby Trap. It touched on some pretty sensative topics, obviously, though there are a few things I could have done without, such as the alien porn creator. I would have liked to have seen more of the civilization on the planet. Overall it was a good episode, and a great character episode for Klyden and Bortus

I liked the episodes, though I would also say they were a bit uneven.

A lot of character development and not a lot of science-fiction.

I feel kind of bad for the dark matter scientist and the teacher because they were so obviously introduced as tools to introduce impediments to the alpha relationship on the show.

I generally prefer more natural relationships developing as opposed to jamming a new hot guy/girl in there out of nowhere.

The first episode was better than the second, although having them back to back probably helped bring down episode 2 which was also relationship focused.

The issue I had with the second episode is that it took an hour to make a point that was patently obvious after the first 5 minutes. No one checked the holodeck logs? He's sick every day this week? It just dragged on.

Still, I'll keep watching.

The first episode explained exactly how men can get in shit over the smallest of things with their partner.

I found the 2nd episode just silly. Subject matter we're being bombarded with. OK we get it. Not enough emphasis on the alternate storyline, the Alien planet. Although the scene where Isaac is being approached by the holo-character was funny. For a faceless android, he manages to convey the most hilarious expressions.

That was probably my least favorite episode. It was just gratuitous and an example of the side of Seth MacFarlane that I'm not a fan of. He takes a joke that he finds hilarious and beats the viewer over the head with it. I was reminded of the humor in Ted. I would've liked there to have been greater emphasis on the planet, which was a genuinely interesting premise. As it was, the episode was too much sitcom and not enough science fiction. Many other episodes struck a better balance, IMO.

Oh well. Really enjoyed last year sans a few episodes.

Had one good season anyway.

First two episodes were horribly written and sometimes the acting was painful. It's too bad MacFarlane didn't progress through all the psycho-sexual stages of developmental as a child. It's the one thing that's kept his career down.

He could be much much more. His storytelling is very good and he has an excellent imagination and can create interesting, vivid worlds and characters.

Unfortunately he always has his hand on his pud and that leaks out in to everything.

Well you could say he's doing what he wants, or his own vision, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. But he still gets to do them. It's not like he's some Uwe Boll...
